Linus Tech tips coverage of CES 2015 is brought to you by Phantom glass visit
0:04
store. phantom.in screen protectors out there
0:08
as well as hyperx so seate SL Le demo
0:12
might seem like an odd place to kick off our CES coverage but they've got some
0:16
stuff inside that looks pretty cool it all starts here though with their living
0:22
logo thing actually that's exactly what they call it sweet I got it right so a
0:26
living logo is their like patented idea of having their their new corporate logo
0:31
and I'm G to try and do this there we go there it is as like a a
0:37
living visualization of the data from a
0:40
particular feed let's say Instagram Twitter New York Times you punch it to
0:44
change ah I just changed over to Twitter so if I tweet a picture of my bum in
0:47
theory I can get it to show up on that screen if I use the right hashtag but
0:50
they've asked me very nicely not to do that so Cates marketing for this is G I
0:56
re it seven out of seven I think or something along those lines it would
1:00
have sounded a lot better if this was an 8 mm thick drive but it is unfortunately
1:05
7 mm thick now what they've done to achieve this is they've gone with a 5mm
1:09
design drive so that's a 500 GB capacity
1:13
and then by using a very unique 1 mil
1:17
thick on either side steel enclosure
1:20
they've managed to achieve the same drop rating resistance and all that stuff
1:24
they told me I could drop it I mean I'm sure you wouldn't want to do that on a
1:28
drive anymore than you absolutely have to as their regular drives which are
1:32
typically anywhere from twice as thick or even more what's really cool is that
1:37
for contrast they've actually got right next to it so here's the 5mm drive that
1:42
powers this bad boy this is a 35 year old drive that is 5 megabytes
1:49
that is obviously a lot thicker than 5
1:52
mm thick it's powered by a standard four
1:56
pin Molex goes to show you that power connector has been around for a while
1:59
but other than that this thing is completely alien look technology to me
2:05
and this was manufactured for IBM way back 35 years ago I mean some of this
2:10
stuff is hand done there's hand soldered
2:14
wires on the bottom of this drive pretty freaking cool I geeked out over this one
2:18
over here we've got some consumer and prosumer stuff so first up is the
2:21
personal cloud which is available in a 1bay or 2ay configuration and the
2:25
objective here is something that I've seen attempted many times but rarely
2:30
with much success so basically the idea is you've got either one or two drives
2:34
the Dual drive one will automatically be configured in raid one for your
2:38
protection and what it'll do is it'll allow you to select folders and have
2:41
those ones back up to a cloud-based storage it'll allow you to stream to
2:44
something like a Roku for example or a chomecast so you can manage all your
2:49
media on your TV in that regard and the
2:52
last one is that it actually backs up all of your PCS and even things like
2:56
phones and thumb drives if you configure it all within their app of course I
3:00
haven't tested any of this and maybe seate will uh give us a chance to check
3:04
it out because it sounds pretty good the other consumer thing that we've got here
3:08
is an update to their previous generation wireless streaming drives
3:13
that's not so much U newer and faster and more amazing but definitely more
3:17
affordable so this is simply named the Seagate Wireless and uh Lord forbid they
3:23
ever release anything else that's ever Wireless ever again because that's going to get really confusing but pretty much
3:27
it streams to three devices it's got 500 gigs of storage and it's got a very
3:30
friendly look to it lasts for about 6 to8 hours on battery according to the
3:34
folks here now the next one we've got is actually more of a product update than
3:39
strictly speaking a whole new idea the ly rugged raid which is more of an
3:43
update to their previous single Drive product and I guess I kind of gave away
3:48
what exactly they changed about it this is a dual Drive Rugged Drive version
3:52
it's not exactly strictly speaking consumer this is more for your prosumers
3:57
but it's got a couple of cool features so aside from having two hard drives
4:00
inside it's got Thunderbolt or USB 3 and
4:03
Thunderbolt requires no auxiliary power it is completely bus powered in order to
4:08
run it off a Thunderbolt although for USB 3 you will need an additional power
4:12
adapter and it's got a hardware RAID controller inside which means you can
4:15
configure it in raid zero or Raid one although I'd say if you're so concerned
4:19
about your data that you're buying like you know an inch and a half thick rubber
4:24
enclosure for it you should probably be running raid one so it stays nice and
4:28
safe and here's the star of the show this is the L mirror and it kind of
4:35
breaks the mold a little bit when I say mirror I don't mean redundancy and it's
4:39
not particularly thin and it's not particularly rugged like the other stuff
4:43
they were showing off this one is all about style so it's not targeted at me
4:48
and I wouldn't be able to with a straight face say thanks to the $600
4:53
that L slipped into my back pocket I
4:56
endorse this drive for me personally this is not going to be the ticket
4:59
because I'm more about looking at the cost per dollar part of the equation as
5:03
opposed to the does this thing look amazing on my desk even the Box itself
5:08
like opens in this unique way so it's
5:11
not really targeted at me because it's a $280 1 tab drive but what it is is it
5:16
something that feels a little bit different than a typical hard drive
5:21
that's what they were going for and I'd say mission accomplished you guys but
5:24
one thing I certainly appreciate is that even though it's a shiny piece of
5:27
technology they've got Gorilla Glass on so it should be slightly more
5:31
fingerprint resistant than most shiny things although that doesn't mean that
5:35
they don't include a cleaning cloth in the box and doesn't mean they don't want to have one here handy at the kiosk to
5:40
keep these things all shined up so my
5:43
lovely assistant here from ly has been showing us around to all the you know be
5:48
drives and external drives and uh suddenly I I blurt it out well can you
5:52
show me your racks and she kind of
5:55
goes what I'm sorry if I made you really
5:59
uncomfortable because what I actually meant was these racks yes over here this
6:04
is the stuff that I really geek out over they've got the business storage forb
6:08
rack mount Nas so this is I mean it's pretty self-explanatory I told them they
6:11
should have an easier name for it they should call it like the the Tiger Claw or something like that but basically
6:16
it's uh a forb business Nas and they've got one down here that I personally am
6:22
interested in for the first time as far as anything Thunderbolt goes because I'm
6:26
more of a of a 10 gigabit Ethernet kind of guy but this right here is the Lei 8
6:32
big rack Thunderbolt 2 thing so basically what you can do is it's eight
6:36
drives per one U you go ahead and rack
6:39
mount these and then you can actually daisy chain up to six of them together
6:43
which is going to give you 48 drives potentially on a single pooled
6:48
array and then what you can actually do is use a little Mac Mini as a gigabit
6:52
Ethernet uh Network share for it so it's not just limited to Thunderbolt access
6:57
you can also actually share it over the network it's still not quite what I'd
7:01
want I would like to see every shared
7:04
resource have 10 GB connectivity to every computer but it is a huge step in
7:08
the right direction and if you're looking for something that is just Wicked Crazy Stupid Fast this is pretty
7:14
much it they had files copying on here at 3 gigabytes per second which is going
7:19
to be enough not just for an individual user not just five users but you could
7:24
run many many users off an array like that at a time so I think that pretty
7:29
much WS it up for Seagate and ly thank you very much for being a good sport
7:33
about that that whole business there I'm very sorry thanks for coming Lin us so I
7:37
just want to take a moment now to thank our sponsors for allowing us to be here
7:41
at the show it's Phantom glass so the ultimate protector for your phone I
7:45
should probably hold up my phone when I do this Gorilla Glass 3 protectors that
7:48
go on over your phone they've got a nano coating so you'll have absolutely no bubbles guaranteed every time as well as
7:53
hyperx make sure you check out the hyperx YouTube channel they've got a lot of great gaming content on there you
7:58
guys aren't going to want to miss it so that's store. Phantom dog glass and
