0:00 now this is something i've been asked a lot of times a shocking number of times
0:04 does running my CPU cooler
0:08 make it go faster and the answer to that is always well
0:13 it's complicated you know if you do this business and all these things then yes
0:17 it can but in general no but i realized
0:21 that i've never actually tested it
0:24 so today we're gonna find out
0:27 does your CPU being colder make it perform better in any meaningful way
0:43 the Corsair hx 1200i delivers 80 plus
0:46 platinum efficiency for quiet efficient power and Corsair link digital for
0:51 advanced monitoring and control click now to learn more
0:55 so our first test here is actually fairly real world this is cinebench r15
1:00 and we are just getting our our baseline i mean this machine hasn't been touched
1:05 since we filmed the build guide so exactly the way we had it set up
1:08 readings you can see it's running at five gigahertz pretty much on the nose
1:14 with that benchmark running and then the way that we're actually going to get
1:17 temperature readings is not necessarily
1:21 while running benchmarks but rather using ida 64 in order to
1:26 stress the CPU or not stress the CPU and then there's a couple different ways
1:31 that we're going to take temperatures so i'll bring this up right here so you can
1:35 see right now okay well that was what CPU load looked like while we were
1:39 actually running a benchmark but now it's falling back down again so we're
1:42 going to use this stability test and then we're going to use a couple of different programs for measuring CPU
1:48 temps and the reason for that is they're both measuring it in different ways real
1:51 temp pulls the temperature off the CPU die which actually doesn't go below zero
1:56 so right now it is below zero and then we're also going
2:00 to use um ASUS ai suite because this one
2:04 is pulling CPU temperature off a sensor that's near the CPU again
2:09 not perfect for sub-zero readings but it's pretty much all we have to go on so
2:14 i'm going to go ahead i'm going to start up our test here because i've already
2:18 collected my minus 11 and not applicable temperatures off of uh
2:24 off of my software for temps and we're gonna go ahead and see what they rise to
2:29 okay so while we're running fire strike here i'll go ahead and discuss our
2:32 temperature results which are about what we expected i mean frankly we've tested
2:37 this system before and while we are presenting this as like a range of
2:42 values as opposed to a real value as far as load temperatures are concerned
2:46 all we really need to know is much lower than the other one because
2:51 we're not trying to determine how much faster does your CPU run if you cool it
2:55 a lot we're just trying to determine if it helps at all at all so
3:01 yeah let's see how this goes
3:04 is she like an ice lady all right so apparently our fire strike
3:08 score is better than 97 of all other results we actually only have a single
3:13 gtx 980 hall of fame in this system but
3:16 anyway that's pretty much it for the results that we need in this
3:21 configuration so i'm just going to save this
3:24 now we need to reboot the system and run it
3:28 at stock speed extreme stock speed
3:33 sub-zero benchmarking lightest tech tips
3:41 so i loaded optimize defaults there are actually a couple of things i don't want
3:45 to change so i do want our memory at 1866.
3:53 okay so that's not there anymore and we should probably also stay in raid mode
3:58 since that's how we're booting now just for the sake of convenience
4:02 okay so we've got our results at stock speed now you can see that we fell by
4:08 about 400 points in 3dmark fire strike
4:13 and now all that's left is to shut this
4:16 baby down we're going to use restart because i
4:19 don't want to apply updates in the middle of benchmarking between
4:23 runs here and then we're going to pull off the
4:26 phase change and go ahead and unplug the
4:30 phase change and put this stock cooler on there mmm so sexy
4:35 okay hold on i gotta power it down right now
4:38 i mean the results were about what we expected you're going to see a drop in
4:43 score um and it doesn't really tell us
4:46 anything about our objective today because what we need to know is how that
4:50 last number compares to the one we're about to get with the
4:54 stock cooler that's cool we weren't really getting any uh
4:59 any condensation around there or anything this was cool or it wasn't cool
5:04 wow it was cool but not cool in the wrong places how's that oh balls this is
5:10 like gonna take a bit to remove
5:14 oh and it's really cold so it's hard to work with
5:22 dang it way to go ed
5:26 you can turn the pc on and let it warm
5:29 up whoa you can see the condensation just
5:34 evaporate instantly well you missed it but you would have
5:38 been able to see that it was cool
5:42 i'm sorry you couldn't experience it wow it's still
5:46 like really cold to the touch is that still cold oh no it's warming up
5:51 cool well less cool but
5:55 cool for different reasons ah terrible process
6:01 the dark side of face change cooling kind of oh it's her foot
6:05 yeah i just kind of figured you were propositioning me and i was okay with
6:10 that it made me comfortable okay the pinky
6:14 toe is the most sensitive toe i don't actually know that to be a fact but it
6:17 could be in which case that probably came across
6:20 even weirder than i meant it to okay
6:24 so now this kneaded eraser needs to come
6:29 out which does not look like it's actually going
6:32 to be that easy so i put nuts around the
6:35 bottoms of those
6:38 bolts which is why all the needed eraser needs to come
6:43 off before i can mount any other cooler
6:46 great mate we're not going to worry about our
6:50 maintenance board back to jj you probably know not to take an rma from me
6:54 this way i'm trying from the other side just yeah
6:59 keep twisting yeah the problem is that i also have to hold the nut in place and i'm having
7:04 trouble with that you know what i'll get a screwdriver
7:08 it took off the serial number sticker so much for my rma
7:11 oh no
7:14 this is going faster so that's good oh yeah there's a big chunk
7:19 i feel like i'm picking my nose right now i'm having a lot of success you know
7:23 that felt like a pretty unsatisfying little pick where you know you left a big chunk behind that should have been
7:27 easy to get but you just it just didn't come with the rest
7:31 because the you know the tensile strength of the booger
7:35 wasn't equal to the attachment force to the wall of the inside of the nose did
7:40 you say booger yeah
7:46 hey we're doing pretty well here actually
7:49 not too shabby now all we got to do is not get any kneaded eraser into the CPU
7:54 socket and we'll be fine this computer will power back on
7:59 you know what i'm not going to appease my idle curiosity and pull this CPU out
8:04 because i think there's a good chance we'll accidentally get some gunk
8:08 in the uh in the socket so instead
8:13 uh we're just gonna we're gonna go for it so we'll be back when we're booted up
8:17 on the stock cooler
8:21 the line between bravery and stupid
8:24 is one often traveled atlantis media group
8:28 what do you think that there's not a line separating the two but instead it's
8:33 more of a venn diagram let me just sit in there
8:39 we just chill that's where our building is
8:42 all right that's a good sign oh those CPU temps are a little high i
8:47 guess we gotta reapply the thermal group
8:50 those temps look really high still what is going on here
8:54 do you think it's because i don't have the socket hold down on
8:58 like what happens when i load it oh you don't
9:02 no i didn't put it on i just put the cooler on top of it
9:07 it should be fine the cooler puts yeah it's definitely not working right well
9:11 you know what we're going for worst case scenario here
9:15 as long as it's stable this will tell us the difference between
9:19 sub-zero and like 80 degrees i guess so yeah let's let's
9:24 push forward here we go jj has asked me on occasion
9:29 why do you not like ai sweet i don't know because it behaves like this i mean
9:34 the system is under load it wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't under load but
9:38 these other programs work when the system's under load
9:41 i can move them oh crap i did that thing okay stock
9:45 speed phase cinebench score
9:49 700. here we go
10:01 here we go 8 17.
10:06 what that doesn't make any sense
10:12 the phase score seems to be bugged which i should have noticed back
10:17 when we ran it because you can see we got 700 versus their stock
10:23 4770k that does 822. so it's performing
10:26 normally now and was actually okay well we'll have to come back to this
10:31 i don't know what we're gonna do i all i can do right now is save these results
10:35 so stock speed stock
10:38 cooling cinebench
10:42 and then i'll run 3d mark since it seems to be running normally like this is in
10:46 line with its 4770k score
10:49 so i'll run 3dmark and then
10:53 maybe we will we'll ghetto mount
10:56 the phase cooler back on there temporarily and uh let me see if we can
11:01 get one benchmark out of it before it condenses and drips all over the
11:05 motherboard so i'm just basically going to put this around here
11:08 so the only sort of
11:12 this is do not do this at home
11:15 here we go well there's a difference between being
11:18 a professional and being professional
11:22 oh balls
11:29 oh i did not want that to happen no
11:32 that's a bad thing okay uh why
11:36 why can't anything go right right now
11:41 well let's use the technique we should have a counter in the corner
11:45 of this video for the things not to do that's what
11:48 that is for yeah
11:52 yeah that does do that normally oh this is bad this is really
11:57 bad
12:02 those are like sitting next to the pins if not on them
12:10 if i just kind of jerk it that seems to work better
12:16 watch this video i jerk it
12:19 i never recommend mounting a CPU vertically
12:25 but if you ever wanted to know how to do it this is it
12:28 put your finger through the socket to hold it into place
12:32 while you lower the retention ARM there
12:35 never do that the 3d mark one is actually very close
12:40 to what we got with the air cooler but we'll rerun both just in case
12:47 we need a stress ball right now this thing just shuts down mid benchmark
12:51 you'll know it died from the condensation
12:57 i don't know probably less than ten percent he made up completely off the
13:01 top of his head and run run my pretties
13:07 well this seems like as good a time as any to mention our uh cheero product
13:11 that we sponsored this video this my friends is the cheero handy
13:18 it's a 6 000 milliamp hour battery bank and i'm sure they were going for you
13:23 know the convenient definition of handy as opposed to the other one it's got
13:28 kind of a faux leather finish on it that looks quite nice it's about it's about
13:33 this big next to an Intel stock heatsink so that should give you some idea and
13:37 one of the handiest things about it is the fact that it has an integrated micro
13:41 b usb cable so that right there is where
13:46 you can plug in whatever it is that you could possibly want so if you wanted to
13:49 plug in some other cable say for example a lightning connector you could do that
13:53 there is a battery level indicator meter
13:56 doodad but i can't find the button for it right at the moment so there you go
14:00 there's the leds that light up and it charges at up to two amps with
14:04 compatible devices pretty much um
14:09 i guess that's really all there is to say about it other than that you can check it out at the link below in the
14:13 video description on amazon.com and also
14:16 they wanted us to call out that they have a special deal on the power plus
14:21 three one that we actually featured in one of our chiro spots before so they
14:25 have that on for 29.99 for a limit of 500 units total and given oh look at
14:30 that i found it i'm not sure how given how many of you buy these chiro deals
14:34 that probably actually won't last that long did you just squeeze it here or
14:38 something what did i do oh you shake it oh that's cool all right
14:42 so back to our results 8 23
14:46 there we go that is more like it what
14:49 the heck happened last time
14:52 i don't know whether i'm happy or mad i'm happy it worked i'm mad it didn't
14:56 work the first time than last time
14:59 12 545 3d marks
15:04 and last time what we got with phase was 12 401 so i'm really glad we re-ran that
15:10 now let's have a look at what we got with stock speed stock cooling
15:15 hmm
15:18 let's put the stock cooler back on and see if we can take another crack at that
15:24 oh i didn't save it no oh well whatever you saw it
15:28 all right so it's final conclusion time
15:32 and the answer is no your CPU running cooler does not affect
15:38 your performance our hypothesis our prediction whatever
15:43 you want to call it was correct
15:46 um so you actually have to turn the speed up
15:50 in order to have it run faster which makes perfect sense because can you
15:54 imagine with the kind of precision and precisional precision engineering that
15:59 goes into a product like this if just cooling it down made like some parts of
16:03 it like go faster be completely out of whack it makes no sense so there you go
16:10 like the video if you liked it dislike it if you disliked it
16:13 like it if you enjoyed the crazy hijinx dislike it if you hate the
16:18 irresponsibility of what happened here today leave a comment if any of all
16:22 those things are some combination of them all and as always don't forget to
16:25 uh check out the link in the video description to our community the one where you can buy a cool t-shirt like
16:29 this one on the one where you can change your amazon bookmarks one with our affiliate code so whenever you buy
16:34 cheero battery banks where did it go here it is
16:38 that are handy that is such a funny name for it and they probably don't even know why uh or
16:43 whatever else it is you buy on amazon you will get a small kickback thanks
16:46 again for watching and as always don't forget to subscribe
