0:00 I think it's fair to say that most people have gotten accustomed to using
0:03 the terms internet and web interchangeably I mean it's all the same
0:08 thing right where you SN all your time into World of Warcraft and procure the
0:12 dankest of memes well actually although
0:15 the net and the web are pretty much married to each other they're
0:20 fundamentally different the term internet was actually coined as a short
0:25 word for inter networking which is what
0:28 the internet actually is I huge systems
0:31 of interconnected intranets or computer
0:34 networks from all over the globe as I explained in this video now the internet
0:40 supports lots of different Services just one of which is the worldwide web which
0:45 uses URLs or uniform resource locators
0:49 to locate stuff and hypertext languages
0:52 such as HTML that can be rendered by your internet browser as a web page
0:58 think of it this way all all of the websites you enjoy like YouTube lestech
1:02 tips.com and maybe some of the slightly more questionable stuff with their
1:07 onscreen text and Graphics are kind of like movie theaters that you have to
1:11 drive through the theaters are like the worldwide web but the road that you take
1:16 to get there that's the internet the web is essentially a virtual space where all
1:21 that sweet content is stored and accessed using a protocol called HTTP
1:27 but the internet is the thing that keeps it all connected and just like on a real
1:32 Highway you're not under any obligation to actually drive to a movie theater
1:36 unless your job is to serve popcorn to unruly teenagers at a Twilight release
1:40 there are plenty of services we access via the Internet that aren't part of the
1:44 web for instance if you use a non-browser-based email server through a
1:48 program like Outlook you're probably using protocols called SMTP or pop which
1:54 lie outside of the web another way we use the internet without using the web
1:59 is with file transfers schemes like bit
2:02 torrent peer-to-peer networking and FTP
2:06 don't use HTTP and bypass the web entirely even popular services like
2:11 Spotify various Game servers certain VoIP phones and many mobile apps
2:17 communicate using different protocols than the web these things are separated
2:21 from web traffic by connecting to servers using a different port than HTTP
2:26 which usually goes through port number 80 and although a lot of this stuff
2:29 might seem like it only became popular recently the web has been competing with
2:34 other internet services for a long time one of the most well-known of these was
2:38 called gopher which was something of a rival to the web in the late 1980s and
2:43 early 1990s like the web gopher could also be used to display documents via
2:47 the internet but the flexibility of HTML and development of graphical web
2:52 browsers like Mosaic made the web dominant by the mid 1990s and onward it
2:57 marched with web-based email providers like Hotmail and later Gmail mostly
3:02 replacing you know clients like Outlook you know what your grandma uses with
3:06 video streaming and browsers taking over from downloading the files from FTP
3:11 servers and even the old discussion service uset taking a back seat to the
3:16 ever popular Message Board making it easier for us to troll each other
3:20 without special software and don't forget Google wants to move even more
3:25 all but the most basic functionality of our computers even productivity software
3:29 like word processors to web apps with Chrome OS but here's an interesting fact
3:35 web use is actually slowing down even
3:39 with all the stuff we can do through a browser even things like rudimentary
3:42 video editing the rise of mobile and
3:46 console apps that while they use the internet don't use HTTP has meant that
3:51 web usage has been steadily decreasing for the last few years but even so the
3:56 web is an extremely powerful tool so don't worry it's not going anywhere
