0:04 this dish is so that we can send a wi-fi signal
0:08 10 kilometers away to alex and brandon over at the sfu surrey campus now we've
0:14 actually played around with ubiquity's dish-based long-range wi-fi before but
0:20 i did not set it up properly so while we did manage to send a wi-fi signal across
0:25 our parking lot which was further than we would have been able to do with a
0:29 conventional router that wasn't that impressive
0:33 but that all changes today mike from ubiquity is back and he's going to be
0:37 showing us how to do it properly
0:47 looking for an affordable and reliable vpn private internet access encrypts
0:51 your internet traffic and uses a safe protected ip check it out today at the
0:55 link below so brandon and alex should be in this
0:58 parking lot right here so as long as there's no tree
1:03 branches or decorative log things in the way of that
1:08 hopefully we'll get a signal uh so are you guys set up right now
1:13 uh like sort of i've i'm like 90 done
1:17 setting up the camera okay you called what's up has alex started building
1:21 dishes or anything yet he started building one of them yeah okay
1:24 yeah go ahead put it back in the car um we're not going to use it don't build
1:28 the small one alex that one should be fine for this project
1:32 but because of all the mist in the air we actually changed gears a little bit
1:37 and instead we're going to use the rocket ac
1:40 gen 2. uh you've got chain one and chain zero which are your vertical and your
1:45 horizontal these are connected to the antenna right here
1:48 we've got some indicator leds that are you can actually use to see in real time
1:52 like if you're pointed the right way though don't worry there's more precise
1:56 ways to do that and then you've also got an additional antenna spot here for gps
2:00 uh all that's left on here on the front is this dish you want to make sure this
2:04 doesn't get dented or anything like that that'll change the shape of the signal
2:07 and then what was this one called again a feed horn
2:11 that's where you feed it hello it's alex how are you guys doing so far how close
2:15 are you guys we're all set up um we have the
2:19 stand mostly built and we're about at
2:22 the stage of attaching the satellite to the stand
2:26 okay do you know how to power it not a clue okay well you guys should have a
2:31 big battery yeah it's charging right now it wasn't
2:34 charged yeah mostly decharged over the weekend
2:38 uh cool well why don't you guys finish up what you're doing and we'll get ours
2:42 powered up in the meantime and then we'll be able to walk you through what to do all right
2:48 boom pull so we're like pretty much we're very
2:53 close to being done now also my hands are freezing
2:58 i feel like that having a red camera just makes you more official and nobody
3:02 questions if you're allowed to be there
3:05 um
3:08 now we might be getting kicked off because
3:11 where we need to sit to connect between the two campuses
3:15 isn't technically campus property so although we do have permission to park
3:19 we might not have permission to
3:22 build a wi-fi antenna so where are we aiming exactly
3:28 kind of to the right of the tall tree can somebody point at the tree the the
3:32 tall tree can you can you look at the tall tree
3:36 max there's two so
3:39 who's kicking you out the mall security
3:44 the car park that we're on is technically the shopping centers so
3:48 yeah we don't have permission to work here oh okay
3:54 the great thing is like right after we filmed the intro today i was like wow everything's going so
3:58 smoothly but through the fog of war i couldn't see
4:04 it's just fun so we got completely kicked out of the
4:07 parking lot which would be bad except now we're inside
4:12 where it's warm which is nice and we might have through that great big
4:16 window behind me a direct line of sight to the burnaby campus i'm not entirely
4:20 sure but we'll be able to find out it's our best bet at the moment and we're warm
4:25 which is great so so theoretically all they have to do is fire it up
4:30 set it to our ssid and then configure
4:34 their antenna and we should be able to start dialing them in
4:37 assuming we have actual line of sight which we can't verify until we do that
4:42 so this is approximately what we want right
4:46 we can't even see those trees anymore that's crazy like how much [ __ ] in the
4:50 [ __ ] holy crap so if we're firing like you know 10 city
4:56 blocks away we're not getting any saint karby
5:00 it's gonna be challenging for sure at least i have this handy tripod to
5:05 support me as i go through this
5:09 so you guys are powered up now yep okay do you have a laptop plugged into
5:13 the other Ethernet port um what is other Ethernet port
5:20 um i'm sending you a picture
5:23 okay please tell me you guys have two Ethernet cables
5:27 yep i got it and we do have two Ethernet cables oh yep this makes way more sense
5:30 now okay good
5:34 and then i'll walk you through some um some ip stuff all right
5:39 okay so three 192.168.1.6
5:44 um it says this site can't be reached uh no no no you're supposed to change
5:48 your laptop's ip address to that manually
5:52 oh okay now you should just go into a web
5:56 browser and type in 192.168.1.20
6:02 okay so now you guys have to do your darndest
6:07 through the fog to point at sfu burnaby
6:12 do you know roughly like what heading i should be pointing at or anything
6:19 i don't know the idea was that we were going to have like binoculars and we were just going
6:23 to kind of look at each other and that is clearly not going to be a thing okay
6:27 go to the settings
6:30 under control frequency scan list change it to on and type in 5300.
6:36 um i probably underestimated how far off
6:39 north you guys need to be looking it's like probably 40 degrees off
6:44 yeah and looking at where you guys are looking out of that building i don't see
6:48 how we're gonna get a link also if this doesn't work we have permission to go
6:51 back up onto the parking lot oh really
6:56 so we're back outside hopefully it doesn't rain again
7:00 at least now we kind of know where we're supposed to point it's sort of like that
7:04 way by where that great big crane is i think those also are pictures that were
7:08 taken like a year ago so
7:11 who knows if we can't hit the parking lot when they get out there one of our staff
7:15 actually has a place that is almost exactly due south of here which means we
7:20 would basically just align ourselves with the window and
7:24 point straight out of it if we have a line of sight to him
7:28 oh we are set back up again you're set up okay fantastic
7:33 yeah sorry we're exploring other options
7:36 since otherwise we were just kind of sitting here being useless while you guys did all the work and uh we were
7:41 thinking tyler's house might actually make sense i don't know
7:46 if you've been there before oh yes i have
7:49 well either way it's going to be tight like in terms of trees and stuff
7:53 but yeah tyler's place may actually be a decent bet okay team b
7:59 is heading to a new location on the roof of
8:03 one of our staff's houses
8:06 we think that it's going to be a little bit easier to hit because it's almost
8:10 directly due south of here so it's a bit easier to eyeball
8:14 also there isn't a new building that went up since we scouted the locations
8:19 how are you guys doing up there um pretty good we had some food
8:24 uh no there's like kind of a sunset actually
8:27 the sun just sets so we don't really have great light anymore but it was pretty fantastic right before we started
8:32 filming yeah our lighting was great all day and now we're just using like an led
8:36 lamp on the camera so this video
8:40 at the very least is gonna look
8:43 like garbage at the end like i feel like garbage so the video might as well like
8:48 really just bring it home great here actually
8:54 um kind of like the middle right corner
8:57 middle right what's the right corner okay yeah that's a horrible descriptor
9:01 um like the north corner can you see the building
9:05 kind of to the right of that one with the red on it right
9:09 what so there's like a white box on the top of it i think
9:14 okay i see it so basically do you see that white box
9:17 shoot at the mountain above that wait no hold on let me double check um
9:21 because i actually might not have put our our pin on the exact window that
9:26 we're at no i didn't hold on one second let me just correct that all right this
9:31 is such a stupid way to do this i can't think of a better way so
9:36 okay just make sure i have that mark in the right spot because even a couple of
9:39 degrees like if we can get you guys locked in then we can just adjust until we hit you
9:45 i'm trying to get the height right now
9:50 which is kind of hard to do because we're supposed to do like two degrees
9:55 but this is very far from level
10:00 it's all like this so i think it would maybe like five degrees is good
10:05 but you've got it to two degrees ish
10:09 yeah ish because this whole roof is like
10:16 what a pain
10:23 i have such a headache right now
10:27 yeah at least it's not raining now yeah that's
10:30 good so if i just like if i just like scan past like kind of fast do you guys
10:35 see a blip nothing like not a thing there wasn't even like
10:40 maybe noise out there yeah nothing at all um yeah not a thing
10:46 all right i think it's time to call it guys thanks everyone good work today
10:51 well i mean the kind of work that's good but like doesn't achieve anything
10:58 okay so it's been a few months and
11:02 we are back at it again this time there's a bit of wind to toss my hair
11:07 i've got binoculars they're not
11:10 great binoculars i've got a rooftop
11:14 and i've got a clear shot to maple ridge
11:19 now we already realized that we don't have a pole for our
11:23 stand here that seems to have gotten lost at some point but the good news is
11:27 i'm on my parents rooftop and the odds of them having a random pole sitting
11:31 around somewhere very good
11:34 here's one did not stage that
11:39 that one doesn't fit
11:43 i can smell success
11:47 um
11:50 that looks pretty uh um
11:53 pretty almost ready to be called steady this wasn't tight so it's like that way
11:59 ish or like over there we're not totally sure all right
12:04 we are pulled
12:08 oh almost
12:11 ed should have really brought a compass
12:17 hello hey hey there buddy okay so
12:21 i have the satellite dish hooked up everything's powered on i can't get the
12:24 setup to work on it uh yeah i think it's because we're reconfigured with
12:28 different static ips and stuff so i think you might have to factory reset it
12:32 so that's just when you push the little thingy in the thingy yeah the thingy in
12:37 the thingy you'll need to find a small thingy
12:42 i really wish mike was here because i'm looking at some of the tools and the
12:45 thing and i don't even remember ever looking at this stuff
12:50 yeah same okay i'm into the um spot where i need to log in okay cool
12:55 ubnt ubnt u for up
12:59 b for butt n for nut t for testicle
13:04 i put that in for both of them yeah
13:07 i don't know which of us is the um
13:11 is the access point and which of us
13:14 is the client and i think it matters
13:18 man okay what antenna do you have set um
13:21 rd 5g 30 30 dbi
13:27 wait wait a minute wait a minute you just shared your location with me five
13:30 minutes ago is that you like seconds ago yeah okay so the golden ears
13:35 bridge is right behind you so you guys are in
13:39 pit meadows uh okay so there's the golden ears bridge
13:44 holy crap that's really far away how close are you guys to identifying
13:48 where i am um very very
13:53 not close we definitely should have had binoculars but
13:57 if i was looking past you what would i see past you
14:01 you're looking past me um
14:04 the the river basically um we're like right beside the river
14:10 there's a bunch of trees a bunch of trees not gonna do a lot for
14:14 me if i go like way down on the shore i
14:17 can see the golden years bridge
14:21 okay now we're talking and what part of it is directly behind
14:26 you see how it's got four sets of supports
14:30 that's part of the problem right now i'm having a really hard time seeing the
14:34 water because i think there's a lot of trees and crap along the shore and also
14:38 the water's brown which definitely doesn't help yeah everything's brown at this distance
14:42 because it's a like pretty clear day but it's not a perfectly clear day okay i
14:47 know where you guys are what does your building look like okay so my building
14:51 is the one with all of the like kind of blade looking
14:56 uh things on the top of it
14:59 you can't see that well okay why didn't you guys get binoculars do
15:03 you want to take something like a mirror to have to bounce
15:07 i feel like they're flying to us uh yeah i've got like a gigantic golden
15:12 bounce all right do you want to start bouncing then i'm gonna start bouncing it baby
15:18 like you guys are so far away man i don't know if there's any way you're
15:21 gonna be able to see this but okay i'm i'm gold damn you see me yup i
15:27 see you no way yes i can see it
15:33 okay well that there you go that's where we are
15:36 all right you need me to hold it up so that you guys can aim i think we're good
15:40 now oh freaking hey i cannot believe that
15:44 worked oh oh i'm so excited do we know how far we
15:49 are uh how far are you i think it's about 12 kilometers it's like eight
15:53 miles for the american viewers it's far
15:57 okay cool you're on speaker because we're recording everything okay
16:01 don't say anything incriminating you know
16:04 uh okay so so how would they search for
16:07 me just the alignment tool the alignment tool
16:11 would be best to use yeah it'll make sounds depending on the signal that it
16:14 detects so the align tool though should work now that i have set an access point
16:19 frequency and they should be able to just see stuff yes it should help
16:23 reporting i believe the alignment tool should give you kind of like a like you
16:27 should give you a more better idea when you're getting close to something there's a toggle switch for audio though
16:31 i think thank you i'll give you a call if we need any more help which will probably happen okay bye
16:38 all right let's call alex back up
16:42 hey okay so theoretically right now we are
16:46 about as set up as we can be turn on the
16:50 audio indicator okay it's on and now we just have to try
16:54 and hit each other all right whoa whoa whoa whoa
17:00 what why wasn't this coming up before i didn't even touch it we hit him i didn't
17:05 even adjust it we're at uh current signal minus 80 decibels that is
17:11 well within the threshold check this out brandon we got two bars baby okay that
17:15 beeping is really friggin annoying i'm gonna turn that right off there now
17:21 okay so should i have internet now
17:25 uh no wait
17:28 okay we should be able to share a file between our two computers at the very
17:32 least ah
17:36 okay so here we have it i can see
17:41 alex's computer fu Linus folder that's very nice okay
17:46 here we go this is it
17:51 two megs a second dang
17:55 so that's 20 megabit from here to 12 kilometers away under a
18:00 bridge somewhere brandon don't die
18:03 all right so uh do you guys want you know what why don't i do the fine tuning
18:08 for now because you guys had something to to aim at exactly whereas i could be
18:12 just kind of close-ish yeah okay so that just got worse are you guys looking at
18:17 the indicator right now too yeah it just went down for me
18:21 so i'm a little bit off to the left give me one second
18:25 okay is that better now um it's not as good as before
18:30 really i still have 74. oh wait hold on hold on hold on don't
18:34 change anything yet okay not changing anything
18:38 okay i'm at as good as i've seen yet
18:43 so you can go ahead and you can try and adjust your height and or your whatever
18:47 and let's see what we see all right i'm just gonna push it a very small amount 73 71
18:53 72 okay i'm going to need to like put a box
18:56 underneath the front leg of our thing
18:59 fantastic i can't believe how aligned we were at the start based
19:05 on how small the adjustments that i'm making are yeah we just did our vertical
19:09 adjustment and that did that got us down to 71 so i think that i
19:14 can't be any more aligned okay well you can try horizontal like let's just see
19:19 what happens just play with it just a little bit
19:22 oh wow that's much worse yeah this is like
19:26 fractions of a degree okay so all that's left now is for me to
19:30 play around with height then
19:33 oh that's better for me that's better minus 67 yeah
19:39 minus 65. i got four bars baby
19:43 four bars come check it out oh damn we got four bars let me see if i can get a
19:47 little bit more we're at what negative 61 damn okay
19:52 should we do another speed test okay i'm ready to copy the bigger file
19:57 dang 15 megs a second
20:01 150 megabit wi-fi
20:05 over 12 kilometers
20:09 and it only took us
20:12 six months to set up all right i think that's pretty much it
20:17 gentlemen so all that's left to do now then is tear this down because
20:22 we don't actually need to beam a network connection between the roof of my
20:27 parents building and uh a park somewhere in pitt meadows
20:32 but it was still cool to see this in action
20:36 actually freaking working and i think it's probably got a lot of gears turning
20:40 in your guys's heads in terms of how long-range wi-fi like this could be
20:45 applied whether it's like personally or for business or whatever the case may be
