0:01 hello and welcome to the Linus tech tips or Linus media group whatever q a video
0:07 in this video i posted a thread on the forum and then posted on twitter and hit
0:12 all that kind of stuff and had people ask random members of the team questions
0:15 grabbed questions from that list on the forum and then went around asking
0:19 everybody what the i don't know the questions ask them the
0:23 questions and they answer the questions relatively simple concept this is a q a
0:27 let's get started
0:37 the cooler master master case 5 lets you make your mid tower pc case your own
0:42 with a variety of modular parts and accessories click the link in the video
0:45 description down below to learn more oh yeah i definitely drive the pink
0:49 civic and i wouldn't say that i get more attention than i'd like i mean i'm the
0:54 kind of person who goes and puts my face all over the internet for two million
0:58 people to you know watch me do embarrassing crap or
1:02 yeah driving around in a pink car is the least of my concerns
1:07 uh we would love to do more factory tours it just really depends on what
1:12 brands allow us to tour their factories like there's a lot
1:15 that goes into the planning and the approval process and all that
1:19 because not that many brands actually want to show off what goes on behind the
1:23 scenes you know if there's anything less than perfection from the qc side that
1:28 reflects poorly on them so um i'm talking to a few people right now
1:32 maybe expect to see something within the first half of next year but uh yeah we
1:36 definitely want to do some more factory chores just hang on a minute here
1:40 so the rsi is a lot better i've been using a
1:44 powerball lately you can look it up it's like a little
1:47 gyroscope it's very powerful it gets spinning really fast it exercises every
1:52 single muscle in your forearm and i've been using that at least once a week
1:56 also working out helps a lot and also i changed my mouse to something that is
2:00 more ergonomic i can work i can get back to work now well i found it in uh
2:05 australia that's where it originated and
2:08 it never been there and then it made its way over here to
2:12 canada with the australian people and i
2:16 started to mimic it from those aussie folks those lovely chaps but i don't
2:23 know i just used to live where there was lots of aussie people at the ski hill so
2:27 i thought their accent was cool so i tried doing it myself subconsciously
2:30 pretty much any accent i just subconsciously start talking like that
2:34 in my own head if i'm around somebody long enough ah so that was a great deal the 8 SSD
2:40 array back when i bought it would have been considered a smoking hot deal
2:44 because i got the ssds which were
2:49 like a crazy blowout price with a promo
2:52 on top of it and i bought it at my staff discount which was way lower than what
2:55 we were selling them for which doesn't happen very often and i paid just under
2:59 a dollar per gig for about a terabyte of SSD storage and
3:04 then on top of that i bought a raid controller card for about five or six
3:08 hundred dollars so the whole thing came to about 1500 or about a dollar and a
3:12 half per gig for storage that was faster than anything that came out for like
3:17 three to four years after that uh we have received some negative
3:21 feedback due to Linus's antics in the past but my response is always like if
3:26 you sponsor this channel that's what you're gonna get and then i don't really hear much back
3:31 and they usually keep sponsoring the channel so
3:35 i don't know um
3:38 yes i'm going to do more videos on the channel i have a mechanoid
3:43 gk15 whatever coming up uh robot and i'm
3:46 also going to do the flycli scooter um
3:50 sort of thing it's got a powered electronic wheel in the back
3:53 which is uh both of them are actually spoiler alert kind of disappointing and
3:58 then other robot videos i have planned for later as well you
4:02 know basically robots like robots
4:06 whenever i have time dog
4:10 there's no plan just winging it every day
4:15 keeping it fresh
4:18 keeping it fun
4:24 keeping it real those are the only things that we plan on doing at channel
4:28 super fun and doing your best every day reaching
4:32 for the stars trying hard to do the best job that you
4:36 can do at what you're doing
4:44 uh basically that what else can you what else can you say i don't want to give
4:47 you some plan like yeah we've got a five year plan it's actually really
4:50 structured out there's a whole graph and pipe chart and
4:54 pie graph and pie something
4:57 i don't know i didn't even know i'd be doing this last year what do you think
5:01 i'm gonna be doing next year i don't know i could be doing something crazy so
5:05 keep your eye out for some crazy stuff to go down
5:08 taryn dawg
5:12 right now we use Windows movie maker uh obviously
5:16 it's just it's the best because it comes with
5:19 Windows so that's very convenient i think that was all i wanted to say about that do i
5:24 find myself becoming exhausted from video editing not really it's it's
5:29 exhausting in a different way right because you're sitting down all day yes
5:32 we can stand up and down with this up desks mostly i found myself sitting down
5:36 and what i'll do is um every time that i finish a video i will set it to render
5:41 and then i'll go bother brandon i'll stand up and i'll walk around and
5:46 that helps a lot in fact i kind of want us to get a little bit of like light
5:50 workout equipment so we can just like do some pull-ups or something like halfway
5:55 through the day you know that'll keep you like it's less tiring to move your body
5:59 you can start to feel your muscles just
6:02 degrade if you don't use them um yeah i do have
6:07 a personal youtube channel it's it's dumb you won't like it
6:10 it's just about how premiere is missing a lot of features and has a
6:14 lot of bugs and i just complain endlessly about all of the problems with
6:19 premiere some people find it very enjoyable there's also a tutorial
6:23 three and a half hours long if you want to watch that
6:27 on that channel you know check it out if you want
6:31 i guess if you're into premiere and who
6:34 would be the best settings for media encoder for
6:39 outputting videos are the presets because they already exist it takes no
6:44 effort
6:47 uh if we stopped doing sponsored content
6:50 we would not be able to pay anyone so
6:54 all the channels would pretty much die
6:58 honestly i think that's something that's always come pretty easily for me because
7:02 for one thing i used to work for a retailer so every video i ever did was
7:07 effectively sponsored like i got paid a paycheck to make the videos so really
7:11 nothing has changed in that regard i mean sure it's you know it's squarespace now or
7:16 whatever but it's it's all basically the same thing and then number two is that i
7:21 follow the valve principle that they at least say if not necessarily following
7:26 through on it all the time and that's that you can't lie or try and deceive
7:29 the internet because if you do they will catch you and they will never forget so
7:34 i've always taken that very seriously it's it's even if i was a dishonest
7:38 person what would be the point of trying to
7:42 keep that from people because they're just going to catch me and it's going to make it 10 times worse when they do
7:48 i don't really have plans to be sponsored for csgo right now but
7:53 there might be something in the works in the near future
7:58 it's unlikely that there will be a video with me rapping in it again although i
8:02 may sing again at some point i do have kind of an idea festering in my mind for
8:06 a uh a music video that i'd like to make at some point
8:10 why you guys laugh stop staring at me every morning i come in
8:15 and i i transfer trans i trans not all those files to china i
8:20 need to send in all the scripts and re-transcode some footage
8:25 to them and then i start shoot set up green screen and lighting
8:31 and shoot and add it
8:34 fast as possible and i added all of those i get this
8:39 question every day on instagram twitter periscope
8:44 um yes i got a bet
8:48 right after the vote
8:52 and do i like the bed yes thank you for the vote
8:58 well the fine dropped okay yes i have um but
9:03 i've never damaged it because of the drop i always caught it
9:08 so i've never actually successfully dropped a camera i held my personal cam
9:13 my black magic camera over a candle once to dry off water and it burnt a little
9:17 bit of it so don't do that kids
9:22 i think it's a good thing like the entire camera market especially for
9:26 dslrs for video has kind of was stagnating for a little while and the
9:30 mirrorless cameras give you the ability to do so many different things that you
9:34 can't do with a dslr and companies like sony are actually pushing the camera
9:38 industry forward unlike canon who are
9:42 i don't really know what they're doing but they're not really adding much to
9:46 the current market wow tips for starting your own business
9:50 uh that's a great question um
9:54 the answer is really different depending on a lot of different factors like i was
9:58 at this talk that gary vaynerchuk was giving and some guys like can you help
10:03 me save my business i bought a a small
10:06 free to distribute magazine and we're
10:09 struggling and gary vee's like
10:13 i'm sorry to hear that man
10:17 you gotta have a good you gotta have a good business idea and then if you do
10:21 then the advice that i can give is go all in because otherwise if you
10:26 accept failure as a possibility then i
10:29 think that leaves that's just an excuse to allow it to happen
10:33 i think keeping our opinion out of the sponsorship spots is really about
10:38 maintaining an appropriate expectation with the sponsor i mean whether it's a
10:42 Corsair or whether it's Intel or whoever else they understand
10:46 that our editorial content is separate from our advertising content and it
10:51 always will be and as long as they know that going in
10:55 then when and if they complain hey you know
11:00 um the answer is well that was our opinion
11:04 so uh ts and you can either continue to
11:08 advertise with us and get access to our gigantic audience which by the way we
11:13 wouldn't have if we didn't give our honest opinion about things or you
11:17 cannot and that would be fine too and so far i think we're at like 95 plus
11:22 percent sponsor retention so they've all decided that us being honest with our
11:26 viewers is more important than you know us always sugar coating everything hello
11:31 Colton hey what's up question for you yeah what's the question what do you do in
11:35 your average day at work i manage the
11:39 company emails i reach out to new clients and i manage
11:43 old clients i'm an account manager and
11:46 uh i do a lot of other random crap too
11:51 how did i get two copyright strikes on the channel that is a very good question
11:56 um pure stupidity i would say um
12:01 doing probably doing a bunch of them in a day
12:04 um yeah i just mixed i mixed one i mixed
12:08 two of them up in a like one month span
12:12 so luckily i still have my job to get a job here what happened was
12:17 Linus posted a video saying that he was looking for an assistant i was currently
12:21 in school and looking for a part-time job he was looking for part-time hours
12:25 so i was like hey this might actually legitimately work and i'd live
12:28 relatively close to where i would be working so i shot in a resume i was not
12:34 the most qualified he was looking mainly for someone to shoot and edit things i
12:37 had literally never filmed a video using
12:40 any device in my entire life and i had never edited any video on any system in
12:46 my entire life but just like kind of faked it by showing him still shot
12:50 images that i had taken and then put my computer on my resume my computer was
12:55 mineral oil cooled fish tank you can probably find it in the video up here
12:59 someone will put it up there um yeah so he brought me in more just to
13:03 like talk to the dude that made a mineral oil computer than a serious
13:06 interview but then hours later the vid interview finally ended and i somehow
13:11 got the job so here we are i do not think that leaving school to
13:16 work at this company uh from the start or whatever was a bad
13:20 idea i think it was a good idea i don't think that it would have been a good
13:24 idea for everyone in similar scenarios
13:27 we had a pretty good base to work on and it was still a huge gamble uh sometimes
13:32 i do wish that i just stayed and actually got
13:35 my degree being that far in and then not getting my degree was a little bit
13:38 frustrating i do kind of plan on maybe going back
13:42 and finishing off an engineering degree at some point in time
13:46 but yeah i don't think overall that it was a mistake i do definitely think it
13:49 was right to go with this company i enjoy my job and it's going very well uh
13:54 but yeah i would like to finish off a degree at some point so my decision to
13:57 pursue tech as a career really happened by accident i mean i was
14:01 really passionate about games and gaming so i started doing things like upgrading
14:06 computers and then from there i just really liked it and in a very short
14:12 period of time i went from being a gamer who tinkers with his computer to make his
14:16 games run better to really being a computer tanker who ran games
14:20 periodically even though i'm not very good at them as an excuse to have a hot
14:24 rodded computer and i'm really not sure exactly how it happened but part of it
14:28 came from my passion for helping people with things i was actually a member of
14:31 the ncis tech tips forum with like six or seven thousand posts or something
14:35 along those lines just from just to talk about any excuse to talk
14:39 about computers if it was someone wanting to pick a video card or someone
14:43 wanting help reformatting their hard drive i was like yeah i can talk about
14:46 computers if i type an answer to this question so um it just kind of snowballed from
14:51 there i got kind of good at it and here i am today
14:54 squirtle is still alive and running i actually have a lot of new parts for
14:58 squirtle not all the new parts for squirtle that i want but quite a few of
15:01 them a big part of the reason why we haven't had an update on it is that uh
15:06 well one the plan changed i'm now actually going in a case not just gonna be on a
15:10 test bench i have the case i have a lot of the other components but
15:14 two three i don't know whatever uh we've been plugged with videos for the holiday
15:18 season the holiday season like october november december are all our busiest
15:22 months so probably in the next couple months after ces we will maybe hopefully
15:28 see another squirtle update there will be another spiral update
15:32 uh it's a little different having to share my office because i got very used
15:36 to being alone over the like probably what was that year and a half that i
15:40 worked alone but it's actually really nice having a close-knit team and being
15:45 able to work with john in the same room is actually really helpful we bounce
15:48 ideas off of each other we work on things together uh he helps me out i
15:52 like to think that i help him out i like working with the team i like the
15:56 team floor aspect i like the idea of new companies where a huge group of people
16:00 work in one area so i've got one
16:04 working on it maybe there'll be more people in the future
16:08 so here i have two major things i usually take care of one of them is
16:12 benching um there's usually when i'm benching stuff i'll try to choose a
16:17 number of tests based on what exactly it is i'm trying to find out
16:20 sometimes i'll do synthetics or sometimes i'll do like a load test to
16:24 test things like heat power draw that kind of thing i've
16:28 recently i started doing stuff more inside the case
16:31 the other thing that i do a lot of obviously is writing i'm the main writer
16:35 for fastest possible i also do some writing for ldp as well um they're quite
16:40 a bit you know sometimes if i get a topic that i know a lot about i can just
16:44 kind of go and it's really no problem a couple different things
16:47 sometimes i'll choose a topic based on oh if it's a more technical thing that
16:52 is a little straightforward because really you're just presenting the results but there is a little more to it
16:56 than that um
16:59 um about what your can we scratch this this is that what i try to do is find a
17:03 way to make the numbers meaningful interpret it somehow say does this make
17:07 um i'm also the one who makes all the graphs for the video so but you know i
17:11 try my best to come up with a with a good conclusion
17:15 besides that um i do like some general sort of tech support stuff around here
17:19 um nothing but yeah that's pretty much what i do here and i hope i answered
17:22 your question thanks for checking out the forum
17:25 so the lct forum today uh i would
17:28 view it as kind of a little bit stagnant in the public eye i'm going to say
17:33 public eye specifically because this is the alpha forum and this is the
17:39 currently viewable public forum this has been being worked on by a little bit
17:44 myself not much though largely uh cat
17:47 with a smiley face colonel mortis and blade of grass and this will be being
17:52 pushed out to uh the the main site actually relatively
17:57 soon if you're on youtube maybe by the time you see this video what we've been
18:01 saying for a long time now is in the suggestions for features thread and all
18:04 that kind of stuff like hold up we're waiting for the new forum
18:07 this is it this is the new forum so we will hopefully finally be implementing
18:12 some really cool stuff that we've been wanting to for a really long time for
18:15 camera videos i hope i do a lot more i want to have a bunch
18:19 of ideas that i want to do and stuff i want to try as for nab
18:24 i hope we go i'm like 90 percent sure that we will but
18:30 we'll see the exact urls of my youtube and twitch
18:33 channels well twitch is relatively easy it's twitch.tv luke underscore lafr on
18:39 there every friday after the WAN Show i do a
18:42 game stream and uh
18:45 usually on sundays i like to do an
18:48 editing stream where i edit some videos for my personal youtube channel and on
18:52 other random days i usually play games or edit videos or even 3d print things
18:57 sometimes my youtube channel i just recently got a custom url for so it's
19:01 youtube.com c slash luke lafrenier
19:06 on there uh right now i'm just kind of throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what works
19:11 so i've got an ice bucket challenge a random joke video with my mom unboxing
19:15 and reviewing a computer um myself getting stuck on a bridge and a vlog i'm
19:20 planning on trying to get to weekly content within the next
19:23 few weeks here yeah check it out um
19:27 nikki v originated i was born in queens new york you know it was a hard growing
19:31 up it was a struggle uh you know i grew up a screw-up i got
19:35 introduced and i censored that part blew up
19:40 uh you know it's a it's just a combination of my life everything that's
19:44 happened to me up to this point this is all this is me all right
19:48 this is all this is all me this is all this is real life you know this ain't no
19:53 act i don't know nikki v is a combination of stuff i've
19:57 consumed over the years for you to enjoy with your mother and
20:02 your sister and your grandmother tell that i say hi

20:47 there you go thanks for watching guys i don't know if
20:51 this video was that interesting so let us know in the comments down below this is the first time we've done this style
20:55 of q a and i'd love to do more in the future one thing that i want to make a
20:59 note of is you guys can ask things if we do q and a's like this in the future but
21:04 like technical questions and stuff like if you want to ask brandon how to film
21:07 something specific you can ask him that if you're asked want to ask taran how to
21:11 do something weird with editing or edsel how to do something weird with editing
21:15 you can do that so go ahead next time we do q and a's go ham ask whatever
21:20 question you want anyways yeah i thought it was kind of fun thanks for watching
