0:21 poop on their phones including me until recently I knew that FICO matter flying
0:25 out of your toilet when you flushed it was kind of an issue but I didn't quite
0:29 realize how bad it actually was luckily someone at the welcome trust did know
0:32 about this the welcome trust's aim is to and I quote achieve extraordinary
0:36 improvements in health by supporting the brightest minds and essentially they're
0:40 an independent charity that funds research to improve human and animal
0:44 health they accomplished this by being one of the world's largest providers of
0:47 non-governmental funding and they funded
0:51 a study that found that one in six phones are contaminated by feal matter
0:55 which wouldn't be a problem if you could wash your phone the same way you wash
0:59 dishes enter the phone soap charger a proper cleaning solution for your phone
1:04 phone soap claims and I quote that there is a lot of ways to sanitize your phone
1:08 such as with soap bleach or fire the
1:11 first two will very possibly damage your phone and however awesome cleansing your
1:15 phone with fire may sound don't do it
1:18 although that being said having a fire cleansing blowtorch for your phone would
1:22 be pretty metal ah back to reality so how does it work well the phone soap
1:27 utilizes ultraviolet germic radiation
1:30 which is already used in a variety of applications including food air and
1:34 water purification the the specific ultraviolet light required is called UVC
1:39 which is short wavelength ultraviolet radiation and the phone soap uses two
1:43 UVC lamps which are positioned above and below the phone while it is inside the
1:48 phone soap charger all of this sounds great because after all the research
1:51 I've been doing I'd rather not have this acne causing disease spreading crap pun
1:56 intended on my phone because that thing goes against my face man some amount of
2:01 germs can be good for your immune system but the amount that is on your phone
2:05 could be a little bit too much now that we know how it works let's do a quick
2:09 tour of the unit in terms of build quality well it's a plastic box it's
2:14 totally unexceptional but it also isn't horrible I would have liked to see more
2:18 considering you're paying $60 for what is essentially two UV lamps a USB plug
2:23 and some plastic housing around it but if it performs its function then I guess
2:27 that's all right speaking of USB plug you can plug in any USB cable you want
2:31 into the unit so be able to charge pretty much whatever phone you have
2:35 which is nice and there's an LED on the front of the unit which shows its status
2:39 blue means the unit is currently in cleaning mode and green means your phone
2:43 is fully charged and last but not least there are unique acoustic Outlets AKA
2:49 holes which are cut into the bottom of the unit which will allow sound to pass
2:52 through so you won't miss any alarms or notifications that may go off and with
2:56 that out of the way the question on everyone's mind is does it actually work
2:59 well phone soap and the Daily Planet both seem to think so they went to a
3:03 microbiology lab and made this video I'm No scientist but their results seemed a
3:08 little bit too amazing and although this is my personal nonprofessional
3:13 opinion uh I wasn't a fan of a few things about their methodology one they
3:18 sprayed pre-made bacteria on the phone and immediately went to Cleansing it
3:21 with a phone soap or in the case of the control immediately pressing against an
3:25 augar plate this process doesn't seem as
3:28 real world as we would like with our testing two they only left the phone in
3:33 the phone soap for the 4-minute cycle that it takes to clean the phone not the
3:37 common way I would expect people to use it which is an overnight cycle three
3:41 they claim you see results of the control test that was had bacteria that
3:46 was living on the phone but it was just sprayed on the phone with a solution
3:50 that was pre-created all in all it felt like the control test was just a result
3:53 of exactly what was in the spray bottle they may have well just sprayed the
3:57 spray bottle directly onto the agar and again I'm not a scientist but letting
4:01 different bacteria live on the phone for prolonged period of time so it has time
4:05 to cultivate and grow like it would in the real world especially in pockets and
4:09 purses which act almost like incubators would make for a more realistic test
4:13 than just a spray bottle the test didn't have much to do with the phone they
4:17 could have actually sprayed this Solution on any non-biocidal object and
4:20 the results honestly would have been the same so let's walk through the methodologies we used we actually
4:25 decided to do it a second time because we were worried when our initial results
4:28 conflicted with the daily Planet the first test was with two separate HTC1
4:32 m8s which I cleaned off with an alcohol solution then I used both of them the
4:37 exact same way doing the exact same thing for 2 days I then put one phone in
4:41 the phone soap and left it on the table and left the other one on the table
4:44 beside it for a total of 8 hours after which I let the cultures grow in AAR for
4:49 a little over a week the results were inconclusive with all the plates looking
4:52 more or less the same and we were concerned that using two different
4:56 phones and letting the plates cultivate for too long may have both affected our
4:59 results the second test was done with one phone an iPhone 4 I ran this through
5:04 a worst case scenario by intentionally not taking care of it the way I normally
5:07 do as I'm actually quite anal about the cleanliness of my phone un intended I
5:13 prepared AAR plates and then swabbed the phone before putting it in phone soap
5:17 charger as I first put four plates in our war warm server room to cultivate
5:22 after 8 hours I swabbed the now phone soaped phone and did the same thing
5:27 about 4 days later it takes longer because we don't have incubator I first
5:31 took the control samples out and filmed an examination of them and then 8 hours
5:35 later I took the phone so samples out and filmed an examination of them as
5:39 well doing the exact same procedure to be clear once again we're not scientists
5:44 and we totally love to hear your feedback on our methodology and we're
5:47 not specifically calling out the Daily Planet we just thought this thing was
5:50 pretty cool so we bought it for an unboxing ages ago but since we don't do
5:54 unboxings anymore we end up having to actually review it I don't actually
5:58 think there's anything inherently ly wrong with daily planet's testing methodology and it is likely more
6:03 technically correct than ours is I just prefer more real world testing scenario
6:07 when testing something that I will actually use in the real world this is
6:11 the same reason why we do gaming benchmarks by actually playing the game
6:15 instead of using a canned Benchmark in the end the results were not as good as
6:19 I was hoping after watching the other video but it did have a repeatable
6:24 measurable positive effect in one case
6:27 it actually left the plate very if not perfectly clean but it did leave things
6:31 behind in our three other scenarios another thing to note is that we are not
6:35 in a lab so the control group isn't perfect meaning that all the AAR plates
6:40 didn't have the exact same bacteria or the exact same amount of bacteria in
6:46 them but that doesn't change the fact that the phone soap still didn't cleanse
6:49 whatever that bacteria was off the phone and this bacteria is what came out of
6:53 the foone soap so as far as I can tell if you want something that can mostly
6:57 clean your phone then the phone soap is it but it may not be the 100% effective
7:01 solution that the Daily Planet showed in their video and it also won't help the
7:05 fact that your pocket is essentially an incubator and you are growing cultures
7:09 throughout the day while you use your phone let me know what you guys think in
