0:00 have you ever come across the term thermal throttling when doing research
0:03 to buy a new laptop or other device I mean it sounds kind of cool right like
0:08 yeah when this you know phone gets all thermal up in here you can crank that
0:13 throttle all fast look no that's not it thermal throttling
0:19 is a great technology but if you're experiencing it in most cases there is
0:23 something wrong with your device its design or the conditions in which you're
0:28 using it I'll EXP explain what it is in a moment but first history lesson time
0:33 in the old days you know before gunnam style Justin Bieber and much more
0:38 importantly than either of those other two things the Pentium 3 1 GHz with
0:42 speedstep technology computer processors operated at one frequency and one
0:47 frequency only with the power consumption and heat output that came
0:51 along with that if you didn't put a heat sink on it or a cooling fan failed in
0:56 your system it could heat up so much that it would literally burn burn itself
1:01 to death it wasn't all bad though out of
1:04 this negative characteristic of old PC stuff came the popular past time of
1:08 Geeks with obsolete Hardware creating blog posts and videos about cooking eggs
1:13 and other food items on their CPUs so what the heck happened to that well
1:17 today's microprocessors not just the ones in your computer but the ones in
1:21 your phone or other devices as well are super smart they are monitoring their
1:27 temperature and power use hundreds of times per second and adjusting their
1:32 performance so the frequency that they run at on the fly with features like
1:36 Intel speed step and NVIDIA GPU boost that means that if the Chip's power
1:40 consumption or in the case of thermal throttling temperature gets too high it
1:46 will simply throttle back its performance and prevent itself from
1:51 dying a quick and potentially delicious
1:54 death now I mentioned that in most cases you shouldn't observe thermal throttling
1:58 with a device that's functioning correctly but this isn't always true
2:04 some Thin and light laptops and especially some phones are actually
2:08 designed to only be able to withstand the heat of let's say the graphics
2:13 processor or the central processor being fully utilized at one time and if you
2:18 hit both of them at the same time one or both will thermal throttle to keep the
2:23 temperatures of your device under control because higher temperatures are
2:27 a unpleasant for the user's hand and and
2:30 be detrimental to the short and long-term lifespan of the components
2:35 inside the phone especially the battery
2:38 so in these cases thermal throttling is a way to preserve some functionality
2:42 during heavy use in ultra thin compact devices rather than allowing the device
2:47 to just shut down entirely in order to
2:50 save itself speaking of functionality linda.com is today's episode sponsor
2:55 okay that was a terrible segue yes it was Nick but linda.com is a genuinely
3:00 awesome service they have thousands of courses available in their Library Each
3:04 of which is taught by an industry expert and they add more every week learning on
3:08 linda.com is extremely flexible you can pick and choose what you want to learn
3:12 course by course or if you have a general interest in one area you can
3:16 head on over to linda.com in the playlist Center and learn from one of
3:20 the more than hundred mixtapes that they have available for a wide variety of
3:24 topics from photography to business to music production and best of all their
3:28 service is very affordable with plan starting at only $25 a month but they
3:32 don't expect you to buy their service before you get a chance to try it if you
3:36 head over to linda.com tequi they will hook you up with a 7day free trial which
3:41 gives you full access to their knowledge schmorgus board I never thought I would
