0:00 at a mere $300 the Philips 276e is the
0:04 first quantum dot display that I have
0:07 yet had the pleasure of putting my grubby little hands on but does it
0:12 deliver or does it
0:23 disappoint let's start with the monitor itself the 276e features only what I
0:27 would consider to be basic inputs VGA DVI and HDMI with no DisplayPort it
0:34 resorts to an external power brick something I don't usually mind
0:37 personally though I wish the cord was a little longer on this one so it reached
0:40 the floor more comfortably but is considered a design compromise by many
0:45 it has no Creature Comforts to speak of so no USB hob and it not only lacks any
0:51 ergonomic adjustments other than tilt in its admittedly attractive though metal
0:56 base but to add insult to injury does not feature vase amount points so other
1:02 than putting a riser or some books under it on your desk nothing can be done to
1:07 adjust the height the bezels are of average thickness so no complaints there
1:12 but while some people may be into white monitors to go with their oh I don't
1:17 know 2006 model MacBook or whatever the
1:20 use of glossy plastic anywhere that we might have to look at it is a pretty
1:25 sore spot for me as are the touch sensitive buttons on the bottom right
1:29 right for what must be the worst onscreen menu controls that I have yet
1:34 encountered while it's true that they are at least labeled unlike the genius
1:39 ones on Acer's predator x34 and the contextually switching ones that force
1:44 me to navigate deep within the menu just to change a bloody input on this Ben Q
1:49 the labels do me very little good when they are positioned in such a way that I
1:53 need to lie my head down on the desk to see them PSA to monitor makers all of
1:59 them not just Phillips here glossy plastic is bad tactile feedback and
2:04 labels we can read on navigation buttons are
2:08 good okay lonus cool story bro but the
2:11 reason I'm still watching is that I want to know if quantum dot which by the way
2:16 is actually as cool as it sounds and involves a sealed tube with these dots
2:20 that react to Blue Light by shining red and green learn more here is enough to
2:26 make this puppy worth any of the compromises that you might be making by
2:30 buying it and for you my friend I will reveal the
2:35 answer it depends on who you are and
2:38 what you want to do because a quantum
2:41 dot monitor much like all the buzz and
2:44 marketing nonsense around LED monitors
2:48 is still at its heart an LCD monitor it
2:52 inherits many of the same characteristics that you would expect
2:55 from any LCD in this case the
2:58 unexceptional black levels of our IPS ads panel make dark scenes look more
3:04 gray than black and while casual gamers won't notice the difference its pixel
3:09 response times are nothing to write home about for competitive Gamers but what
3:15 you get in return is the as advertised
3:18 wide color gamut support in the form of true 99% coverage of the Adobe RGB color
3:25 space this in spite of the unexceptional
3:29 outof thee boox color accuracy is a huge
3:32 Boon for digital imaging hobbyists and prosumers who will be super amped to
3:37 have the ability to work on photographs that they've taken in Adobe RGB mode on
3:41 their camera natively on their workstation to get the best possible
3:46 printing results at an unheard of price point the
3:49 276e even alongside a decent Colorimeter
3:53 for calibration is still going to be fighting in a much lower price class
3:58 than other monitors with similar color space support but that doesn't make the
4:04 276e a slam dunk and I have one more
4:07 major issue with it the way it's presented in the marketing materials and
4:11 in the reviewers guide as more vibrant
4:14 thanks to its ability to represent a wider range of colors is really
4:18 irresponsible as far as I'm able to tell unless you color calibrate it and set up
4:23 an ICC profile to correct this native
4:27 Adobe RGB monitor to the smaller srgb
4:30 color space which is used almost exclusively on the web and the PC you're
4:34 going to end up with inaccurate oversaturated colors think of it this
4:39 way a program like uh let's say your web browser will call for 100% green
4:45 assuming a fully srgb pipeline then the
4:49 monitor is going to go to town delivering a 100% Adobe RGB green that
4:55 the program had no idea that it could display compounding the issue is the
5:01 fact that even profiling is not a perfect solution while macOS handles
5:07 color Corrections pixel by pixel
5:10 systemwide on Windows it's handled on an
5:13 application by application basis with many common programs like games for
5:18 example not being ICC aware so using
5:22 this monitor you're going to end up with TV display model syndrome where your
5:27 saturation is too high in a way that might make it look Punchy next to a
5:32 competitor on a shelf but actually displays the content in a way that the
5:37 Creator did not intend most monitors
5:41 literally every single one that I've ever seen with wide gamut support deal
5:45 with this simply by having an srgb mode often with a quick switch button within
5:50 the onscreen display but for some reason
5:53 the 276 e doesn't work properly I got
5:57 the exact same 9 9% Adobe RGB coverage
6:01 in srgb mode and Phillips's response
6:05 telling me that the oversaturated greens were probably because I'm not used to
6:09 wide gamut displays demonstrates that while at least I don't believe they are
6:13 intentionally misleading customers they also don't seem to really understand the
6:17 issue here which leads us finally to a couple of conclusions number one is that
6:23 whether this monitor is for you or not wide gamut support is coming to the
6:27 mainstream thanks to quantum dot woo freaking who at this kind of pricing I'd
6:32 be surprised if every LCD doesn't support it in a couple years time what a
6:36 cool technological advance to tide us over while we wait for OLED to deal with
6:40 its Burnin and cost issues and this is
6:43 conclusion number two we all need to practice new technology use responsibly
6:49 it's all fine and good to be ahead of the feature curve but it's important not
6:52 to lose track of the way that most people will use the product in the
6:56 process I'm not saying that the 276 is a
7:00 total flub of a product but in my humble opinion it is best suited for use as a
7:05 secondary display for a hobbyist or a
7:08 prosumer photo editor for example where ICC aware applications can be dragged
7:14 over to it but other applications like games can be runon one with proper
7:19 standard srgb color space support speaking of which
