0:00 it seems like Hollywood Blockbusters these days are always trying to outdo
0:05 each other to see which film can have the most wildly over-the-top
0:09 multi-million dollar special effects and while this sort of movie Magic can
0:14 require some really complicated postprocessing much of it relies on a
0:18 pretty simple piece of equipment The Humble green screen which allows it to
0:24 appear as though a piece of content was filmed in a completely different
0:28 location be it a Fantastical one or
0:31 totally mundane one but how does it work
0:35 well when you shoot something in front of a green screen such as your favorite
0:40 YouTube host you can tell Whatever video
0:43 editing software you're using to detect a range of colors in this case shades of
0:48 green and replace anything that falls within that range with a transparent
0:53 layer that means you can put anything you want behind it and it will peep
0:59 through and although this is a pretty simple idea green screens have proved to
1:03 be extremely versatile and are widely used to Overlay even extremely complex
1:09 and expensive CGI in high budget films
1:13 now part of the reason for this is how useful the color green is modern digital
1:18 video cameras use things called Bayer filters to capture light these filters
1:23 are designed to be more sensitive to Green Light than to red or blue because
1:27 our own eyes operate the same way way and are most responsive to Green this
1:32 allows the camera to record many shades of green very accurately so that when
1:37 the raw footage is edited on a computer the software can precisely replace only
1:42 green pixels and leave everything else intact green also contrasts very well
1:48 with human skin color unless your name is Bruce Banner making it an ideal
1:52 choice for use in a studio but green screens weren't always the most commonly
1:58 used background for special effects before the Advent of modern digital
2:01 recording blue screens no not that kind
2:04 were actually more popular you see back in the era of the physical film real
2:10 special film that was only sensitive to Blue Light was readily available making
2:15 it easy to produce a negative that came out clear where the blue screen was
2:20 which could then be overlaid with a background to produce a full scene blue
2:23 screens were used extensively in Classic Movies such as the original Star Wars
2:27 Trilogy Where producers filmed miniature models of Starships in front of blue
2:32 backgrounds and they continue to be used today in certain situations such as
2:37 shooting low light scenes so wait a minute lonus are you telling me that all
2:41 I need to create awesome scenes at home is a camera an editing rig and a big
2:47 green or a blue sheet well sort of
2:51 before you whip out the camera and try to give James camera to run for his
2:54 money there are a couple of things to keep in mind if you're shooting with the
2:57 green screen although modern video editing software is very good at
3:01 differentiating Shades of Green from other colors shadows and shiny surfaces
3:06 can absorb or reflect enough green light to throw off your software and make the
3:11 finished product look like a mess for this reason proper lighting is extremely
3:16 important to professionals who make a living off of green screen recordings
3:21 but are YouTubers like me going to be using green screens forever we are
3:25 starting to see cameras that can actually record depth information kind
3:29 of like the connect for Xbox so the future could be very interesting but for
3:34 professional cinematographers instead of casual gamers this technology is very
3:39 very far away from mature so for the foreseeable future you won't be
3:43 expecting to see me wear any green shirts on St Patrick's Day so let's say
