0:00 there's always these promotional materials of every drone or quadcopter
0:06 being flown above the mountaintops or in
0:09 the remote Wilderness but what you can't
0:12 see unless you look really closely is
0:16 the gigantic Pelican that was used to carry it there and don't get me started
0:21 on the whole enjoy the thrill of flight
0:24 as you soar through the air they always
0:28 leave off the bit about out on a tiny
0:31 little screen with so much glare you can't see Jack well all of that ends
0:38 today DJI sent us one of the first early
0:42 units of their firstperson view flight
0:45 goggles and a mavic pro the fully
0:49 featured drone that's small enough to put in your
0:53 pants if you're into that sort of thing
1:06 I by power and MSI's new lineup of gaming laptops feature Intel 7th
1:11 generation core i7 processors check them out at the link
1:16 below I haven't actually reviewed the DJI mavic Pro yet so before we get into
1:21 the experience of using the brand new DJI goggles I feel like it deserves some
1:26 attention when it comes to Features there's nothing especially
1:31 groundbreaking about it on paper it could almost be summarized as a
1:35 miniature Phantom 4 the arms for the front Motors fold out from the side the
1:41 arms for the rear Motors fold down from the bottom and like a falcon you'll need
1:46 to remove the hood before you fly and
1:49 that's pretty much it you're ready to go
1:52 even the quick release rotors can be left in place during transport and will
1:57 unfold themselves once start the Drone
2:01 it comes with a surprisingly ergonomic and compact controller that can be used
2:06 independently or with a real-time feed from the camera that's much lower
2:10 latency than before thanks to ocusync by
2:14 plugging in your phone with the included cables it's got micro SD expansion with
2:18 the ability to save a backup copy of the streamed video to your device it's got
2:22 ultrasonic sensors and dual downward facing cameras front-facing cameras for
2:27 Collision detection that works great as long as the thing in front of you isn't
2:31 glass the onboard GPS enables a handful
2:34 of different autonomous modes but there are still some issues from my
2:39 perspective neither the mode that attempts to recognize you based on a
2:43 short setup process nor the one that tracks your location based on following
2:48 the GPS signal from the controller is capable of changing height relative to
2:54 you so if you go up a mountain or down
2:57 it it will run out of ground or lose sight of you point of Interest though is
3:02 solid for getting smooth footage in a circle around an object but manual
3:07 control is pretty much where it's at from my perspective the mavic's smaller
3:12 size ends up being both a pro and a con its agility not to mention the much
3:18 higher quality of its metal and plastic construction are strong points that
3:22 enable it to go into areas that might concern owners of larger more fragile
3:27 drones but even in the much higher performance sport mode that can go up to
3:32 65 km an hour it's not the fastest out
3:36 there and it's a touch more susceptible to gusts though with that said in normal
3:42 conditions once again I've got to hand it to the engineers at DJI you got to
3:47 speed up the footage to make it feel like anything but a tripod in the sky
3:53 the 4k camera can be evaluated two ways
3:56 from a professional standpoint I could discuss how the one and 23 in sensor
4:01 doesn't handle low light as well as the higher-end Phantom 4 Pro or how the
4:05 recording compression makes 4K off the mavic look more like 1080 off of a good
4:10 camcorder but from a consumer or even prosumer standpoint all of that really
4:15 goes out the window if you're just looking for dope AF aerial footage of
4:20 whatever cool thing you're doing you're going to absolutely love this thing but
4:26 will you love it from a firstperson perspective
4:30 the DJI goggles as they're calling them put you right in the cockpit of your
4:34 drone after a very short setup process using the onboard touchpad or the
4:39 controller once you've paired it to register your fpv headset you just lower
4:44 the blast shield and you're dropped into what is effectively a gigantic movie
4:49 theater full of where you're flying and
4:53 impressively thanks to dji's use of dual
4:56 full HD displays their goggles have got to be the best looking virtual theater
5:01 I've seen yet with almost no discernable screen door effect where you can see
5:06 gaps between the pixels so I spent most
5:09 of my time in the mode that moves the camera gimbal according to your head
5:13 position and the new fixed Wing mode that kind of flies where you look like a
5:19 like a head steered airplane would and if you're an aerial sightseer who has
5:23 never done fpv before like me you are going to be absolutely Blown Away the
5:29 latency on the connection while not low enough to keep me from getting a little
5:33 nauseated if I stood up or tried to move around while I'm flying made the
5:38 controls super intuitive to use and the
5:41 video quality whether you choose 720p at
5:44 60 FPS or 1080p at 30 FPS was sharp
5:49 enough that I never once found myself thinking you know this is okay but it
5:54 would be so much better if I popped the
5:58 micro SD out of of the Drone and then
6:01 into the goggles after the fact to watch the full quality clip and I guess yeah
6:06 that's kind of a cool thing too you can watch movies in your private theater
6:10 using the onboard speakers or headphone jack if you want to but now we have to
6:16 talk drawbacks thanks to their omnidirectional antenna array in the
6:20 headband their battery their dual displays Etc dji's goggles are heavier
6:27 and less comfortable than I wish that they were and there's also significant
6:32 light bleed around the nose I'd prefer something that has more of a strap-like
6:36 system to hold it against my face but
6:40 that's honestly far from the biggest thing preventing me from recommending
6:44 that you run out and buy a pair right now for 450 bucks you may have noticed
6:50 that in all of my footage using the mavic pro and the goggles I've got
6:54 somebody with me well this is mandated
6:57 by law in the US because because you're legally required in most areas that I'm
7:02 aware of anyway to maintain line of sight with your aircraft something
7:06 that's obviously not possible inside an
7:09 enclosed helmet so the DJI goggles like
7:13 many things in life I guess are best enjoyed with a friend to keep an eye on
7:18 your drone for you but that's tough for people like me who frankly just don't
7:23 have any friends further complicating matters for recreational drone users
7:28 Canada is latest batch of restrictions makes the operation of a UAV like this
7:33 one illegal
7:36 basically anywhere but the Wilderness which is why some of our footage which
7:41 was taken before these regulations were added to the criminal code is near our
7:45 office and some of it was taken in the middle of corn Bean nowhere after the
7:51 rule change I mean some of what they're doing does make sense to help keep
7:55 people safe but a lot of it frankly feels over restrictive so I guess if
8:00 you've made it this far in the video thinking wow this thing looks awesome
8:04 that thing looks awesome but I don't even think I'd be able to use it in my
8:08 area then I guess what I'd have to say is get some discussion going in the
8:13 comments and reach out to your local representation because experiences this
8:17 cool shouldn't just be for people who
8:21 have a you know a getaway cabin in the woods
