0:00 sometimes high technology really can feel like every time you take two steps
0:05 forward you've got to take a step back and that's definitely how i felt when we
0:10 reviewed samsung's super ultra wide chd
0:14 90 almost exactly one year ago i mean that thing was a sight to behold as wide
0:20 and as tall as two 27 inch regular
0:23 monitors side by side and it had a 144
0:28 hertz refresh rate for gamers was basically the monitor of the future that
0:33 is unless you were coming from a future
0:36 where high resolution screens were a thing because with a vertical resolution
0:40 of just 1080 pixels it was a blurry
0:44 dog's breakfast compared to even cheap korean monitors off of ebay but today
0:51 we've got some new options both lg and
0:54 dell have released their own 49 inch 32
0:59 by 9 displays this time with over 75
1:03 percent more pixels that's right baby it's 1440p baby the
1:09 hex gears nova mechanical keyboard is a wired entry level keyboard that features
1:13 full metal construction and is available with kale box brown or box white
1:16 switches check it out at the link below
1:28 the first thing to know when comparing these two monitors is that as far as we
1:31 can tell they are using the exact same panel as lg display actually makes
1:37 display panels while dell does not but
1:41 that's not a criticism because what a panel it is it features a 5120 by 1440
1:48 resolution which is the same exact number of pixels as two 27 qhd or 2560
1:56 by 1440 monitors side by side but then
1:59 of course without gross bezels bifurcating your crosshairs
2:03 if you're a gamer it's also over 7 million total pixels which for a lot of
2:09 gamers might actually be the sweet spot so on the one hand this brings a
2:13 noticeable improvement in image clarity compared to 1080 class displays of this
2:18 size almost all of the test users
2:21 spotted the upgrade in an experiment that we ran recently which you can check
2:25 out up here on the other hand compared to gaming on even a single standard 16x9
2:32 4k display we're still actually working with almost a million fewer pixels so
2:38 even though they're spread across 49 freaking inches of incredibly
2:43 immersive gaming glory this panel is still not quite as hard to
2:49 drive as more mainstream 4k displays so
2:53 we were able to get 120 to 180 FPS in cs
2:56 go full screen max settings not that anyone plays like that and around 40 to
3:01 50 FPS playing apex legends with an rtx
3:04 2070 now 40 to 50 FPS is certainly
3:08 playable but a lot of pc gamers really prefer to have higher frame rates in
3:12 their games these days NVIDIA recently even shared a study on the practical
3:17 competitive advantage of high refresh rate gaming so our next step then was to
3:22 hook up a 2080 ti to this beast
3:26 only to be a little bit disappointed
3:29 because now our rig has the FPS for a true
3:33 pc master race experience but our monitors can't keep up if high refresh
3:38 rate gaming is your thing you'll need to find another display because unlike the
3:43 lower res samsung from last year that runs it up to 144 hertz these 1440p
3:50 models max out at 60 hertz although with
3:54 that said we were able to get a stable overclock on both of them up to around
3:59 76 hertz which isn't too bad so they're
4:02 suitable for sightseeing and non-competitive gamers but i wouldn't
4:07 say they're really for hardcore esports players
4:10 moving on to productivity though totally
4:14 different story 60 hertz is plenty for office work so these monitors are
4:19 basically fantastic no like really fantastic you
4:23 can easily get three or four Windows
4:27 open at the same time and with the
4:30 1440 vertical pixels text might not be
4:33 the sharpest we've ever seen like on lg's 5k ultra fine but it's still nice
4:38 and clear which is important because remember even though it's super wide
4:44 you're still likely to end up sitting only about 30 inches away depending on
4:47 the size of your desk another difference between this new
4:51 panel and the samsung chd 90 is the
4:54 tightness of the curve now all of them are curved monitors
4:58 because by the time you go this wide it actually does kind of make sense but the
5:03 samsung uses a rounder 1800 r curve
5:08 compared to the lg and the dell's more flat 3 800 r bend now which one you
5:13 prefer is kind of down to how you intend to use it now if you'll always be close
5:19 a really tight curve is fine but if you plan to also use your monitor as your
5:24 dorm room tv you might prefer the flatter approach especially if you find
5:28 yourself watching with friends now as for color accuracy our dell monitor
5:32 shipped with calibration literature that we verified in our tests and it's great
5:37 we're talking professional level delta ease of less than 2 and 98 coverage of
5:42 the srgb color space as for our lg unit
5:45 that one was good but not great though we should mention
5:50 that ours is a pre-production engineering sample so it is possible
5:54 although from our experience with lg not necessarily probable that the retail
5:58 ready models will be better calibrated out of the box than ours if nothing else
6:02 though ardell here shows us more or less what displays with this panel can be
6:07 capable of okay then so by this time we've made our point that these two
6:11 monitors share the same panel but we mostly haven't talked about what's
6:16 actually different about them so which one is better well most of the
6:20 differences have to do with the industrial design the chassis the stand
6:24 and the controls for the on-screen display looks wise i'd say it's a coin
6:28 flip they both have a plastic back but the dell is gray while the lg is white
6:33 so io is a bit of a mixed bag too they both have two HDMI 2.0 ports and a
6:38 single displayport 1.4 port but the dell
6:41 has a couple more usb ports than the lg
6:44 five downstream type a's so that's where you plug your stuff in
6:48 two upstream type b's and a very appreciated usb type c by the way you
6:54 might be wondering why there are two upstream ports on it at all it's
6:58 actually really cool it's so you can connect two computers to this display
7:02 simultaneously viewing their output in picture by
7:05 picture mode and then controlling them with a single set of peripherals thanks
7:10 to the monitor's integrated kvm cool
7:13 the lg actually shares these features though but it has four downstream usb
7:18 ports a headphone jack and the only usb port labeled upstream is the usbc which
7:23 just like the usbc on the dell has displayport alternate mode and a
7:28 whopping 90 watts of power delivery that means you can actually dock your macbook
7:32 pro to either of these with a single cable which is pretty sweet especially
7:37 considering that neither of these monitors have bulky external power
7:41 bricks which crap we got into the similarities again
7:45 right uh sorry differences uh the lg does offer a few goodies that are
7:50 completely absent on the dell first there's the stand which actually swivels
7:54 in addition to being able to go lower than the dell and even rotate a little
7:58 bit in case your floor isn't level and then again shame on dell's product page
8:03 which claims the 4914 dw can swivel
8:07 between minus 170 and plus 170 degrees
8:11 but it doesn't swivel at all i think they're talking about viewing angles but
8:14 that's still wrong second the lg has an ambient light
8:19 sensor on the top so the brightness can adjust automatically and it actually
8:23 manages to progress in nice gradual steps unlike some tvs that i've seen
8:28 which can be pretty jarring and then finally there's HDR
8:32 maybe the lg product page says it supports HDR 10 and the toggle is there
8:37 in Windows but i mean this is some pretty low level HDR i mean the dell is
8:40 a nearly identical product when it comes to the tech specs and it doesn't have it
8:45 so i mean i wouldn't be surprised if lg pulled off the vasa display HDR 400
8:51 certification by the time it launches and i guess that's better than nothing
8:55 but don't buy this monitor if an awesome HDR viewing experience is what you're
9:00 after so then if you're in the market for a super
9:05 ultra wide should you buy one of these and if so which one
9:09 well if you don't mind a lower resolution in exchange for high not to
9:13 mention variable refresh rate gaming you're actually still better off with
9:17 the 144hz model from samsung for 350
9:21 less or maybe the upcoming comparable from rog however if you really value the
9:26 higher resolution for work or you're a non-competitive gamer with a machine
9:30 that can push this many pixels so then if you're basically like me
9:35 then i'd recommend one of these as for which one
9:39 i'd love to say go lg straight up actually i didn't even mention it's got
9:42 speakers built into it and the dell doesn't but it's going to cost you it's going to
9:47 be about 150 dollars more when it launches in mid april so it's up to you
9:52 whether the lg only features are worth it i mean they're both awesome displays
9:57 that are great for productivity and immersive gaming and games like apex
10:00 legends destiny 2 cs go deus ex mankind divided anything that's designed with
10:06 super duper wide gaming in mind so
10:10 anything but this benchmark which you can clearly tell is super stretched
10:14 thermaltake's a500 aluminum mid tower case features a minimalistic design with
10:18 a brushed aluminum surface for a clean uninterrupted look it's got hinged
10:22 tempered glass panels on both sides it fits up to a 420 millimeter radiator at
10:28 the front it can take up to four three and a half or two and a half inch hard
10:31 drives inside the left side panel or the top of the power supply cover and it's
10:35 got a type c usb port on the front panel check it out today at the link in the
10:40 video description so thanks for watching guys if you disliked this video you know where that
10:44 is but if you hit like then you liked it i guess
