0:00 display notches love them or hate them we can all agree
0:04 that the quest to eliminate bezels and push ever closer to that mythical 100
0:09 screen to body ratio in a smartphone is in fact stimulating a lot of innovation
0:14 from hidden cameras that pop up when you're using them to using vibrating
0:18 glass as your speaker but the one feature that we have in our
0:22 hands today that seems to me at least less like a gimmick and more like the
0:28 new paradigm moving forward is fod or
0:31 fingerprint on display with the latest example of this technology right here on
0:35 the 6t from oneplus so they reached out to sponsor a video
0:40 all about this new fingerprint scanning technology and how exactly it works so
0:44 let's unlock its secrets
0:48 oh no that's just we're just unlocking the phone there's no secrets
0:53 sorry wait just hold on a sec
1:04 okay first things first definitions ever since the first fod prototypes showed up
1:09 at ces 2018 people have erroneously been
1:12 calling them in-screen fingerprint readers but technically speaking these
1:17 implementations are actually under screen fingerprint readers so with an
1:22 under screen scanner like the one in the oneplus 6t there's the glass
1:27 then the amoled display panel then the
1:30 fingerprint reader an in-screen reader would be a technology we don't actually
1:34 have yet where the scanner would actually be integrated within the
1:38 display panel which would presumably allow large areas of the screen or even
1:43 the entire screen to read your fingerprint enabling ideas like
1:47 multi-finger authentication or even continuous authentication where the
1:51 device never stops reading your fingerprint throughout an entire session
1:54 or transaction that's really fun to think about but let's bring it back to
1:58 the present day because even this would have seemed pretty sci-fi a few short
2:03 years ago something that's especially mind-boggling considering that oneplus
2:07 themselves have been experimenting with this technology in their Labs since back
2:11 in 2017 when they had actually intended
2:14 to include it in the oneplus 5t as for
2:17 why that never happened oneplus says the tech just wasn't ready yet the hardware
2:22 was larger taking up precious space inside the phone and that module
2:27 actually had to be bonded onto the screen increasing the cost and the
2:32 complexity of repairs more importantly for the user though
2:35 they felt that the first gen scanner just wasn't fast enough or consistent
2:40 enough to ship with a oneplus logo attached now two phone generations later
2:44 the 6t uses a newer smaller fingerprint
2:47 module from goodix that oneplus says is the fastest in the industry unlocking
2:52 the phone in just .36 seconds unlike the
2:55 capacitive fingerprint scanners that most of us are used to the 6t uses an
3:00 optical scanner so the phone's display is actually used to shine a light at
3:05 your finger apparently they got the best results with green light and then the
3:09 reflected light that reaches the fingerprint sensor creates an image of
3:14 your fingerprints minutiae the distinctive ridges valleys and forks
3:18 that comprise your unique fingerprint the scanned image is then compared to
3:22 the fingerprint that was stored in your snapdragon CPU's trust zone which is
3:26 analogous to an iphone secure enclave back when you first trained your
3:30 fingerprint model self-learning algorithms help compare your minutia to
3:34 the saved image more quickly and if there's a match the phone unlocks
3:38 lickety-split and now for some rapid fire q a from
3:42 some guy is it durable yeah it's rated for 300
3:47 000 unlocks is that a lot though that's about like unlocking your phone
3:51 150 times a day for five years
3:55 what if i have a screen protector then that will not affect it at all
3:59 okay smart guy what if i have a bunch of scratches or even a crack on my screen
4:03 okay now we're getting into your mileage may vary territory if you have a small
4:06 crack then it probably won't affect it
4:10 if you have a bigger crack then it's probably a good idea to train the model
4:13 with the crack already there and if you have a really big crack well
4:17 then you should go to the gym well see you later
4:24 so in summary this is something that i've been
4:28 particularly amped about because even way back when the first phone started
4:33 showing up with fingerprint scanners on the back i've been looking at that going wow
4:38 i hate this i hate everything about it because i use my phone sitting on the
4:41 desk in front of me an awful lot whether it's to browse through notifications
4:46 swipe them away or whatever the case may be and having a fingerprint scanner on
4:50 the front allows me to pick up my phone less which i don't know about you guys
4:55 but for me is definitely a quality of life improvement so being able to just
4:59 go like this go yes that's important no it's not type of dtap and be done
5:04 huge improvement absolutely love it so thanks for watching guys thanks to
5:08 oneplus for sponsoring this video if you guys disliked it you can hit that button
5:12 but if you liked it hit like get subscribed or maybe consider checking out where to buy the stuff we featured
5:16 at the link in the video description also down there is our merch store which
5:19 has cool shirts like the one i'm wearing and our community forum which you should
5:23 totally join did i train this finger oh i did yeah okay okay okay
5:30 thanks some guys
