0:00 BenQ reached out to us to sponsor a video
0:02 about their SW271 monitor,
0:05 which is marketed as engineered for photographers
0:09 and great for video editing too.
0:11 But what does that mean?
0:14 Well, it means it has hardware calibration support,
0:17 fantastically accurate colors,
0:19 covering over 99% of the Adobe RGB color space,
0:22 and it's 4K to boot.
0:25 So then, with a tool like this at our disposal,
0:27 we thought, well, hey,
0:28 why don't we take this opportunity to take a look
0:31 at how we have done a less than perfect job
0:34 of color correcting some of our own videos here at LTT
0:38 while offering you guys three tips and tricks
0:40 for taking our color correction,
0:42 and maybe yours too, to the next level.
0:44 And since I can't tell pink from periwinkle,
0:48 I've enlisted the help
0:49 of our very own director of photography, Brandon Lee.
1:04 There you go.
1:06 Okay.
1:08 Okay.
1:09 So taking a look at our backlog
1:10 from the last six months or so,
1:12 I was able to identify three common,
1:15 let's call them shortcomings,
1:17 that I think we could improve on.
1:19 The script is not moving at all.
1:20 What the heck?
1:22 Number one, foreground to background color exposure balancing.
1:26 This can be really challenging,
1:27 especially if you're shooting outdoors
1:29 like we were in our recent ASUS AI Mesh video.
1:32 Let's freeze frame there.
1:34 We did an okay job balancing the exposure here,
1:36 but it could have been better.
1:37 The image is overexposed overall,
1:39 but it's particularly bright in the background
1:41 compared to Linus.
1:42 What we should have done
1:43 is brought the background highlights down
1:45 to make Linus and the laptop stand out more like this.
1:48 Number two, color consistency throughout the video.
1:51 If your colors are inconsistent,
1:53 then scene changes are really jarring
1:55 and distract the viewer.
1:56 We were guilty of this
1:57 on our TechLink announcement video,
1:59 where we quickly jumped from location to location
2:01 and each spot had a different dominant light source.
2:04 In this case, the biggest issue is white balance.
2:06 At the beginning, we start in Linus's office
2:08 where he's being lit by a daylight balanced Aputure 120D.
2:11 The daylight balance is 120D, 120D, 120D, 120D, 120D, 120D, 120D.
2:12 Daylight from the outside
2:13 is mostly being stopped by the window shades
2:15 and the white balance on the camera is a little warmer
2:17 because I personally think it's a good fit
2:19 for the friendly tone of the video.
2:21 But then we move to Nick's office
2:23 where the guys are being lit by much warmer overhead lights
2:25 and the shades are open,
2:26 so we see blue daylight behind them.
2:29 To keep the color ideal for this shot,
2:31 I split my white balance between the cool daylight
2:33 and warm overheads,
2:34 otherwise their skin would look really orange.
2:37 But in a fast-paced shooting environment,
2:38 you have to make these changes on the fly
2:41 and they're not going to be perfect,
2:42 which is okay as long as you close the gap in post-production,
2:46 which we didn't do this time.
2:49 We release a video every day, all right?
2:51 Give me a break.
2:55 All right, that's fine
2:56 because I've done the color correction now
2:58 and watching the before and after,
2:59 you can see that it's a smoother experience
3:01 since the scenes have more unity.
3:03 And finally, number three, color grading.
3:06 This is the process of deliberately altering the colors
3:08 in the pursuit of artistic expression
3:11 rather than neutrality and realism.
3:13 But here's the thing,
3:15 in order to do a color grading properly,
3:16 color correction has to be done first.
3:19 If your starting point doesn't have consistent
3:21 and neutral colors and exposure,
3:22 then color grading will usually only serve
3:24 to make your videos look amateurish.
3:27 Our camping battle station video is a good example
3:29 of a video that is ready for color grading.
3:32 It's nicely balanced,
3:33 but it lacks that wow factor to take it to the next level.
3:36 Tweaking the green and yellow tones throughout each shot,
3:38 as well as the adjustments to the overall contrast,
3:40 make the video pop just a little bit more.
3:43 We did actually color grade our murder box video.
3:45 See how those warm colors shine through?
3:47 But in my personal opinion,
3:48 we could have worked in a bit more color contrast
3:51 by pushing cooler colors in the shadows
3:53 to contrast the warm orange mid-tones.
3:55 There we go.
3:57 So that's it.
3:58 Brandon's top three tips for taking your videos,
4:02 our videos, to the next level.
4:04 Back to you, Linus.
4:05 Thanks, Brandon.
4:07 Now, are we really doing the newscaster bit?
4:09 Okay, whatever.
4:10 Now let's take a closer look at the SW271.
4:13 So first and foremost, it comes with a shading hood.
4:16 This not only helps cut out glare,
4:18 but perhaps more importantly,
4:19 makes your monitor, and by extension you,
4:22 look like a super badass.
4:23 It even comes with this little door in the top
4:25 for your spectrophotometer or your colorimeter,
4:28 so you don't need to take the hood off
4:30 when you need to calibrate the display,
4:31 which you can do with the included
4:33 Palette Master Element software that, in our case,
4:36 made the already great out-of-the-box color accuracy
4:39 even better thanks to hardware calibration.
4:42 It managed Delta E values,
4:42 under one, well under what's perceivable by the human eye.
4:47 So thank you, 14-bit 3D lookup table.
4:50 It also comes with this little puck control,
4:53 right for the face, puck controller,
4:55 which not only makes the on-screen display easier to use,
4:58 but also lets you set shortcuts,
4:59 like switching between sRGB, Adobe RGB,
5:03 and advanced black and white modes,
5:04 and it nests nicely into the stand
5:07 in this little nook right here, keeping it nice and clean.
5:11 The stand, by the way,
5:12 is very sturdy, mitigating screen wobble
5:15 while still affording a generous amount of swivel,
5:19 elevation, tilt, and even 90-degree pivot.
5:26 Although it should be noted that your shade
5:28 will not function quite the way that it does
5:30 when you have it in landscape mode.
5:32 Incorrect.
5:32 This gives a-
5:33 Actually, it has more parts that you can use
5:35 to put it in the other mode.
5:36 Oh, really?
5:37 Yes.
5:38 Oh, cool.
5:39 Nevermind, I stand corrected.
5:40 Now, in terms of IO, we've got two HDMI 2.0s,
5:44 one for the DisplayPort 1.4,
5:46 as well as DisplayPort over USB type C,
5:49 which can also deliver both data and 10 watts of power.
5:53 Plus, there's a no-rotation required USB hub
5:56 with an integrated SD reader
5:58 that you can check out here on the side.
6:00 So, a big thank you to BenQ for sponsoring this video.
6:02 Big thank you to Brandon for providing me
6:05 with some much-needed color correction tips.
