1:01 today hands down there's been a lot of hype around these drives and now it's
1:06 easy to understand why the Intel 750 series ssds post some seriously
1:10 ridiculous performance numbers thanks to Intel utilizing a controller based on
1:14 the NVM Express protocol which is designed to replace the ahci
1:19 architecture we've seen on SATA drives for a while now ahci was designed
1:23 predominantly for spinning Media or hard drives and vme has been developed
1:28 entirely for non volatile memory storage which means it doesn't have to deal with
1:32 the extra weight and the Legacy support built into ahci resulting in a more
1:37 streamlined command set which can be which can work beautifully in
1:41 parallelism which can benefit from Modern multi-core
1:45 CPUs but before we delve into the performance of these drives and the
1:49 impact that mvme has had of course we need to talk about the drive itself we
1:53 only have the 2.5 in drive in office right now we may be getting a PCIe addin
1:58 card version for a special project that we have coming up soon so stay tuned and

2:05 doesn't really matter because in terms of performance the addin card and the
2:09 2.5 in form factor drive both have the exact same components inside just with a
2:15 different physical appearance layout and obviously the connector but why did they
2:20 even create two versions of the same components more on that in just a
2:25 moment first the physical overview the front is fairly reminiscent of past
2:29 Intel Enthusiast ssds but here we noticed the first shift from gaming
2:33 performance to Data Center Performance the old skull logo has been replaced by
2:38 serial numbers and product specs when we turn the drive to its side you'll notice
2:42 a significant difference in thickness when compared to the previous
2:46 generations of Intel ssds it is not a
2:49 thin Drive By Any Means at 15 mm and
2:53 because of that it will not fit into many height restricted SSD mounts just
2:57 to heads up when we finally flip to the back of the drive we see one of the
3:01 reasons why this drive is so thick the massive badass looking heat sink no more
3:06 Super rough looking finish on the back of your Intel SSD last but not least we
3:10 have the 8639 connector which splits twice to receive power through a
3:14 standard SATA interface and to send data through an sff
3:18 8643 also known as mini SAS HD connector
3:22 which finally connects to a hyper kit from ASUS now the hyper kit is quite a
3:28 special little connector designed by as s which allows you to go from the mini
3:31 SAS HD connector into the hyperkit module then into an m.2 interface which
3:37 is able to fully connect to the PCIe Gen 3 Lanes all the way directly to the CPU
3:42 which is why it is able to offer the same amount of performance as the addin
3:46 card which is great because say you had an ITX x99 motherboard that was
3:52 compatible with the hyper kit you'd be able to have a powerful graphics card
3:56 and an NVMe Drive which is pretty sick
3:59 he a quick reminder this is using PCIe Lanes on your CPU which is great but
4:04 something you may want to take into account for certain setups possibly SLI
4:08 stuff things like that the drive will still be awesome if you have to connect
4:12 it through something like the PCH considering you ran out of lanes but if
4:16 you want the best possible performance you will want it to directly access the
4:20 CPU through those PCIe lanes and with that all out of the way on to
4:24 benchmarking we put the Intel 750 series up against an Enthusiast grade Trad
4:29 traditional style if I can call it that SATA SSD the Samsung 850 Pro the 850 Pro
4:35 is well regarded as a high-end SSD and honestly it's pretty damn badass but man
4:41 it got absolutely destroyed by the Intel 750 series Drive first up we have
4:46 Crystal disc Mark which is the most important Benchmark in our suite by far
4:51 the reason for its importance is that Intel worked with a developers of Crystal dismark to ensure that the
4:56 program will be able to deploy multiple workers with the 750 series drives
5:00 feeding directly into the CPU through the PCIe lanes you'll need a
5:03 benchmarking worker per CPU thread
5:06 including hyperthreads to fully utilize the drive as you can see the 750 killed
5:11 it getting five times faster sequential reads almost three times faster
5:15 sequential rights both running on one thread seven freaking times faster 4K
5:20 reads and a bit over four times faster 4K rights at 8 threads onto more
5:26 standard less optimized benchmarks we have the Intel drive with displayed
5:30 reads five times greater than that of the Samsung drive as well as right
5:34 speeds approximately 2 and 1/2 times greater than the Samsung Drive in addo
5:38 disk the Blackmagic disc speed test results were showed Intel having a read
5:44 speed of almost four times higher than its competitor and a right speed
5:47 approximately 2.4 times greater now it is important to keep in mind that all of
5:52 these tests are synthetic and different for various reasons and may not be
5:57 perfectly representative of real world sit situations we did attempt a few
6:01 standard wheel World SSD benchmarks but we ran into a fairly strange issue the
6:07 Intel Drive was simply too fast to produce meaningful results in our normal
6:11 real world test Suite as it was bottlenecks by other components in our
6:15 system in other real world benchmarks we have attempted this wasn't really a
6:19 problem and naturally we'll find ways to go around this but for now damn so I
6:24 guess that leads fairly well into our conclusion for this video this is a new
6:28 drive from Intel and it's ridiculously fast it is without a doubt the fastest
6:32 consumer grade SSD on the market today but that speed does come at a cost NVMe
6:38 is still very new to the consumer space and if you don't want to take up a PCI
6:41 slot on your motherboard the 2 and 5 in
6:44 drive with the hyperkit solution is the only currently officially supported by a
6:49 few motherboards we haven't even received word yet on whether other
6:53 motherboard manufacturers will support this drive and even if they do we have
6:58 no clue when their Solutions will be available what do you guys think of NVMe
