0:00 so what's all this Buzz we've been hearing lately about wearable technology
0:03 or just wearables do wearable devices
0:06 have real potential to be Paradigm shifting gadgets or is it just the same
0:11 stuff we've seen before strapped to some part of your Anatomy well in my mind it
0:17 is the Paradigm shifting one so let's take a look at some of the key
0:21 differences between this developing product category and the better
0:25 established one that came before it so it's not like a processor RAM a screen
0:30 in a Bluetooth module uh packed into something or really anything new so the
0:34 big change here then is form factor wearables need to be small enough to be
0:38 worn and not get in the way yet rugged enough to live their lives outside the
0:42 protective cushion of a pocket or purse while providing adequate battery life
0:46 for all day operation oh and being stylish too I mean it's not like
0:49 consumers ask for much do they so how are manufacturers delivering on this
0:53 whole wearable idea well two of the most well-known early wearables are the
0:58 Samsung Galaxy Gear a and Google Glass a
1:02 well glass although these products did have some useful features so seeing
1:06 emails and text out a glance and even replying to them with voice searching
1:10 for information and getting directions with a little screen that only you can
1:14 see taking photos from your wrist or from your head James Bond style there
1:18 admittedly hasn't been a ton of long-term enthusiasm for either of them
1:22 and you're probably asking yourself well G why not surely everyone wants to walk
1:26 around looking like Jordi leforge or tangala right well in my mind these
1:31 devices are yet another example of stuff that wasn't quite ready for anyone but
1:36 the early adopter Enthusiast folks I mean remember modern smart devices are
1:42 just the latest in a long line of attempts to get people to wear gizmos
1:45 every day only to be foiled each time by social pressure like the Bluetooth
1:49 headpiece of the 2000s that caused passers by to assume that Mr three-piece
1:54 executive finally had his breakdown or a lack of compelling enough functionality
1:59 to outweigh the inconvenience of yet another doodad
2:02 to strap on in the morning like the calculator watches of the 80s but to me
2:07 the reason this time is different is because the technology is mature to
2:12 almost the point where wearables can add more convenience to your life then they
2:17 take away and because our electronic devices do so much to improve our lives
2:22 every day they've become practically ubiquitous so the use of one on the
2:26 street doesn't instantly turn you into a Doris these two things open up a whole
2:31 lot of new possibilities that combined with solid marketing for the devices
2:36 might just get wearable tech into the mainstream this time but once it gets
2:41 there what's it going to look like well here are some examples Microsoft is
2:44 working on taking augmented reality to the next level with a wearable pair of
2:49 goggles that it calls Hollow lens which will project applications and data onto
2:54 your actual physical surroundings in the form of a hologram Hol lens goes beyond
2:59 the capabilities of other smart glasses we've seen to actually let you interact
3:03 with your 3D canvas for design work productivity communication and even
3:07 gaming and there's been a lot of action in the wearable World geared towards
3:11 Athletics and fitness for simple lifestyle improvements there are
3:14 comfortable bands that monitor useful stuff like burned calories steps taken
3:18 and distance traveled while biking jogging and otherwise going about your
3:22 day as well as your sleep Habits by the way and if you're into more extreme
3:25 stuff let's say you're a skier for example Oakley's Recon goggles will
3:29 display your current speed as well as your position on the trail while also
3:32 connecting to your smartphone and showing any missed notifications on a heads up display pretty freaking cool
3:37 stuff and it's only just the beginning and if you guys enjoyed this episode as
