0:04 store. phantom.in screen protectors out there
0:08 as well as hyperx so here it is guys AMD free sync a year late and a dollar short
0:14 although that's not necessarily A Bad Thing it did take a year compared to
0:18 NVIDIA's g-sync and it's a lot more than a dollar short the main benefit that AMD
0:22 is touting for free sync is that first four letters the whole free thing so as
0:28 long as you have an AMD GPU and as long as the monitor has a scaler with a
0:32 firmware that supports free sync there is no additional cost compared to any
0:38 other high-end monitor that has a decent scaler in it that also has a variable
0:42 refresh rate panel so compared to g-sync which actually has an over $100 module
0:49 cost that goes along with the monitor freesync doesn't cost extra and it
0:53 actually comes with a couple of other benefits that they're talking about as well while freesync variable refresh
0:57 rate technology is not supported on on HDMI or DVI or any of those more
1:02 traditional inputs the monitor can at least support them without free sync you
1:07 will need to run DisplayPort for free sync to function now if this sounds very
1:13 sort of you know too good to be true actually it gets even better so unlike
1:17 g-sync AMD is launching they're going to have sometime in the next quarter or so
1:21 12 monitors already with freesync and I kind of went well how did you get so
1:25 many when g-sync is still struggling to get a ton of support and the answer is
1:29 well because it doesn't actually cost the monitor vendors anything extra and
1:32 gives them an additional value ad and you might go okay well what's the value
1:36 ad what exactly is this free sync from AMD g-sync from NVIDIA thing and the
1:40 answer is it's variable refresh rate technology so when your GPU is
1:44 outputting at exactly 144 frames per
1:47 second so this is a 27 in 144 HZ monitor
1:50 if your GPU could output at exactly 144 frames per second exactly evenly and
1:55 smoothly all the time then you would never experience what's called tearing
2:00 if the frame rate goes too high or too low you can experience a phenomenon
2:04 called tearing where it's actually showing part of the you know the last
2:07 frame that was rendered up here and part of the next frame down here and they can
2:10 be kind of separated from each other and particularly when moving fast this can
2:14 be very visually distracting especially in certain games so free sync totally
2:20 eliminates that by allowing the monitor to refresh every time the GPU outputs a
2:24 frame to it now it's not perfect and something that you might even be able to
2:28 see right now is that depending on the implementation from the monitor vendors
2:33 you will see either freey disable at
2:36 somewhere in the range of maybe 40 HZ or somewhere in the range of maybe you know
2:41 30 htz where it'll actually if the game frame rate drops below that range freyn
2:46 will actually disable and you will see a little bit of tearing but this is not an
2:50 inherent limitation of freey this is a limitation of the panel technology once
2:54 you start to refresh them extremely slowly you're going to get flickering
2:58 rather than tearing and that can can be even less desirable especially if you
3:02 dip below that quite frequently it'll be very distracting to your eyes so
3:06 freesync actually supports refresh rates as low as 9 Hertz but we're not going to
3:10 see anything like that today so you kind of go okay there's 12 monitors or
3:14 something like that they're promising up to 20 by the end of the year but what
3:17 kind of monitors are we getting are we getting a bunch of 1080 ptn panels no
3:21 actually AMD has a cross-section of different monitors right here in their
3:25 Booth so this is the BenQ XL 2730 Z I'm
3:29 going to try and get all these model names right this is a 27in 2560
3:33 x600 TN panel and it runs at 144 Herz so
3:37 I was getting the look is he going to miss the refresh rate that's really
3:40 important because this is going to this looks like it's going to be a great competitor for something like the ASUS R
3:45 OG Swift this one right here is the
3:48 Samsung uee 590 I sure hope that's right
3:51 yeah it is 28 in 4k 60 HZ and this one
3:56 is not a TN panel this is actually a VA type panel they've actually got their
4:00 demo running here where you can much like we've already seen with NVIDIA's
4:04 pendulum demo you can switch between oh I don't know 45 FPS and 60 FPS and you
4:10 can do sweeping FPS it can change all the time and you can actually see very
4:14 visually if I turn free sync off whoa
4:17 that's ugly and this is not a faked demo you've probably seen this especially
4:21 games like Skyrim man that game Tears
4:24 like a this one right over here is
4:27 the LG this is the
4:31 2967 yeah nailed it so that's a 2560 by
4:34 1080 IPS monitor we've actually reviewed
4:37 it's little nonf freesync enabled brother I'm personally a huge fan of the
4:42 whole ultrawide thing but not a big fan of 10 10,080 vertical pixels but don't
4:47 worry LG is actually showing off hopefully we're going to be checking that out tomorrow in their Booth the 34
4:52 in 3440 x440 version of this monitor
4:56 that is also 60 HZ also free sync enabled so it is an extremely exciting
5:01 time for at least the folks at AMD who want people buying AMD graphics cards
5:06 and having that uh that variable refresh rate feature that is the kind of thing
5:09 that's hard to sell to people because unless they've seen it before it's hard
5:13 to understand why you would even care about something that you've been putting up with for the last 5 10 or 20 years or
5:19 however long you've been a gamer putting up with tearing so I think that pretty
5:22 much wraps it up that is the definitely the most exciting thing here at the AMD
5:26 Booth guys don't miss any of our CES coverage click that subscribe button so
5:29 you don't miss any of it and I do want to take a moment to thank our sponsors
5:33 Phantom glass these guys make the best darn screen protectors on the market
5:37 they're super clear they feel just like the glass that's on your phone and
5:40 there's no great secret to that it's because it's actually made of Gorilla
5:44 Glass they've got a nano coating on the bottom that allows it to be applied with
