0:00 so during the filming of the last season of scrapyard wars jays not to be confused
0:06 with the rapper jay-z mentioned that lg had a tv coming that
0:11 they said was good for gaming and i was like
0:15 what the hell lg i've been bitching about the input lag
0:20 on your tvs since we met
0:23 why wasn't i told about this and they were like oh yeah so we have this nano
0:29 cell tv that's coming out and it has less processing delay so i was like
0:34 hook me up so i can make a video and they did
0:39 so i did
0:49 the Corsair one features a compact form factor that is fast quiet and you
0:54 guessed it compact check it out through amazon or newegg at the links below
0:59 first impressions of the lg 55sj8500
1:03 it looks pretty damn good the bezels are thin and the metal along the outside
1:08 looks sharp i mean it's hard to explain exactly what makes a tv aesthetic
1:13 work but this design got the job done for us
1:16 and you know what else looks good anything you toss up on the screen the
1:20 grand tour in 4k with HDR on amazon
1:24 prime video looks awesome car stuff you can already tell alex
1:28 worked on this video and the speakers are reasonably loud and clear
1:33 now to be clear our nano cell tv had the
1:36 misfortune of being set up side by side
1:39 with lg's w7 OLED wallpaper tv and
1:44 it's not as good as that the black
1:47 levels available on the OLED tv are simply stunning and it is physically
1:52 impossible for any modern lcd screen to
1:55 achieve perfect black levels like that
1:59 but at half the price of lg's least
2:02 expensive OLED it's a pretty compelling picture
2:06 lg's biggest claim for their nano cell tech which seems to be basically their
2:12 branding for quantum dot is accurate colors from any viewing
2:17 angle up to 60 degrees which from our testing actually holds up pretty well
2:22 what they didn't mention though is that the contrast isn't quite as good from a
2:28 wider angle from straight on blacks are
2:32 well black but as you go to the side
2:35 black areas of the scene look more gray and less detailed you won't encounter
2:40 this on an OLED anyway back to the original question though is there any
2:45 credence to the claims that it's good for gaming
2:49 well the picture looks significantly less processed in game mode suggesting
2:53 that well there might be less processing going on
2:57 but i still find this claim confusing
3:01 as far as pure technology goes the OLED
3:04 pixels should switch much faster nearly instantaneously
3:10 so why would it be then that a more expensive tv would be slower than in any
3:16 way is it possible that these OLED pixels are harder to drive or
3:22 there's more processing left on in game mode meaning that the lcd nano cell tv
3:28 might be able to edge out a win well we fired up cs go to try them side
3:33 by side and see if we could eyeball out
3:36 a clear victor and from this completely non-scientific
3:41 test it did seem that the nano cell was
3:44 offering a smoother gaming experience movements felt quicker than the OLED
3:49 which sort of felt jelly-like in comparison
3:53 so to confirm we pulled out the 240fps
3:56 camera alright so firing off around we
4:00 wait the OLED is faster
4:04 we checked this over and over but side by side the OLED was about eight
4:09 milliseconds faster even stranger the nano cell tv
4:14 and our benchmark for true haste the ASUS rog swift 258q at 60 hertz for
4:20 fairness were near to identical to each other as
4:24 well this seemed a bit strange so we decided
4:28 to get pure input lag numbers using the makey makey for this test when the two
4:34 leads are touched together the led on the board lights up and sends a mouse
4:39 click to the computer so we can measure the delay between a click and an action
4:43 on screen after consulting our footage we determined that our OLED delay is
4:48 about 32 milliseconds and the nano cell
4:51 was about 40. this actually maybe makes
4:55 sense given the approximately eight millisecond pixel response times of good
4:59 lcds compared to near instant for OLED
5:03 but that doesn't mean that like a gaming
5:07 monitor for example can't perform any better than a tv our rog monitor managed
5:12 a mere 16 millisecond delay once we turned it up to 240 hertz
5:18 not to mention the extra frames that it displays man that animation looks good
5:24 the point of that though isn't to take away from the result of the nano cell tv
5:29 i mean sure professional cs go players won't be using one anytime soon but i've
5:34 used tvs before with over a hundred milliseconds of input lag that are
5:39 straight up nauseating and 40 milliseconds is comparable to a 60
5:44 hertz gaming monitor we're not quite done with this video yet though
5:48 why did we initially think that the lcd was faster than the OLED
5:53 well it turns out that the crazy pixel
5:56 response time on the OLED can feel like a disadvantage when you don't have
6:01 vertical sync on the divisions between the partial frames getting sent to the
6:06 display are very obvious and it makes
6:09 for a clear line where the GPU was spitting out the frame at that instant
6:14 whereas the slower pixels on the lcd
6:17 make it a little bit blurrier and less obvious
6:21 so then the solution hey lg consult our recent we designed the
6:27 perfect tv video and put freaking g-sync
6:30 on the OLED display then you can have your cake and eat it too but until then
6:35 tldr the lg nanocell tv is great for
6:38 watching tv shows and movies with the added bonus that unlike previous lg tvs
6:44 they're finally taking gaming seriously so it won't make you hurl when you boot
