0:00 a quick memory can be really useful for lots of things whether you're trying to
0:04 find your way to a restaurant sing along to that song at a karaoke bar or
0:09 remember who won the presidential election in 1880 because you've got 50
0:14 bucks on the line at a trivia game or
0:17 something anyway but what about having quick memory in your computer although
0:22 knowing how much memory to put in your PC is usually pretty straightforward the
0:27 topic of memory speed is is more of a
0:31 mystery so how much then does it actually matter well it helps to know
0:36 what those numbers on your memory modules mean similarly to your CPU all
0:41 RAM or Random Access Memory has a clock speed which corresponds to how much data
0:47 throughput it can handle each second but in addition to clock speed memory also
0:52 has timings which are typically expressed as a string of numbers like
0:56 999 24 these numbers are measures of
1:00 latency which in this case is the number
1:03 of those clock cycles per second that it
1:07 takes for your RAM to do things like access certain pieces of data so shorter
1:12 timings will mean faster performance so
1:16 together the clock speed and the timings will determine exactly how fast your RAM
1:21 will operate and like with a CPU or a
1:24 video card you can also overclock your RAM by cranking up the megahertz and
1:29 giving it a little bit more voltage but
1:32 unlike processor overclocking which typically gives small but noticeable
1:37 performance gains getting the fastest memory possible for your system is often
1:42 dismissed as a waste of money by many
1:45 enthusiasts but why would that be then I mean isn't faster always better when it
1:50 comes to computer components the short answer is yes but in the real world
1:57 faster RAM typically will only give you very very small performance boosts that
2:02 you probably won't be able to notice unless you're using very specialized
2:06 benchmarking software you see modern memory has lots of bandwidth and can
2:11 often handle more data flowing in and out than many programs are anywhere near
2:16 capable of using so similarly to how you usually won't get more FPS in your games
2:23 by plugging your graphics card into a faster PCI Express lot spending more
2:27 money on topend memory won't usually translate to noticeable improvements in
2:32 your programs but as with most things in the computer World there are exceptions
2:37 to the rule and faster memory can be very useful in certain situations on the
2:42 server side of things you can use it as a cache so you can take data that's on
2:47 your main storage and make it so it can be accessed much much faster you can
2:51 learn more about that here or you can use it for many many virtual computers
2:57 all at the same time so even if each of them only requires a fraction of the
3:01 bandwidth between them all they can use nearly Limitless amounts of memory
3:06 bandwidth that's called virtualization and you can learn more about that here
3:10 on the desktop side of things though the examples are fewer and further between
3:15 but they're definitely are some like for example if you're running one of AMD's
3:19 Apu processors because onboard Graphics
3:23 use your main system memory as video RAM
3:27 unlike a discrete graphics card which has its own separate RAM on the board
3:31 there's a lot more information going to and from your system memory when you're
3:35 gaming so faster memory can give a real
3:38 boost in your frame rates with that said if you aren't running an APU it's
3:43 usually a better idea to focus your money on things other than raw speed
3:47 when buying memory such as buying from a reputable brand with a good warranty
3:52 because lower quality RAM can cause lots of inexplicable errors that can leave
3:56 you tearing your hair out when you're trying to figure out what the heck is wrong WR with your rig even buying
4:02 aesthetically pleasing RAM modules that fit in well with the rest of your
4:05 computer is in my opinion a better idea than going for the highest possible
4:09 speed so then unless you're buying the slowest most Bargain Basement memory you
4:14 can find you probably won't have to worry too much about RAM speeds that is
4:19 to say unless you're trying to shoot for some kind of an overclocking record in
4:23 which case your bigger worry might be trying not to freeze your hands off with
4:26 all the liquid nitrogen speaking of freezing hands if your hands are so
4:31 Frozen that you can't tunnel to another
4:34 country to access the internet as though you're in it then tunnel bear could be
4:39 the solution for you their Bears have
4:42 claws not to mention fur that make it easy for them to take your internet
4:47 connection and make it so that the sites that you access and the services that
4:51 you access online think that you're in up to one of 20 different countries
4:56 they've got easy to use apps for iOS Android EC and Mac not to mention they
5:01 have a Chrome extension and it is so simple to use that like my family could
5:05 do it once you've got tunnel bear installed which is like double click to
5:08 install Boop awesome all you do is click
5:12 the dial choose the country and boom a
5:15 couple of things happen number one your connection gets encrypted with as 256bit
5:19 encryption and number two your public IP address gets switched so you can show up
5:24 as if you're in a completely different country and tonnel bear bypasses all
5:28 that annoying port forwarding nonsense
5:31 making it so that anybody can do it they've also got a top rated privacy
5:35 policy and they do not log user activity and the best thing about it is you don't
5:40 have to commit you can try out tunnel bear for free with 500 Megs of data for
5:45 nothing and no credit card required and then if you want to upgrade to an
5:48 unlimited plan you can save 10% by going to Tunnel bear.com Linus Linked In the
5:53 video description so thanks for watching guys if you like this video like it if
