well I'm here in the Big Apple for the New York International Auto Show not my
0:05
traditional scene but given how determined cars seem to be to become
0:10
rolling computers on Wheels with Ford even going as far as to Rebrand
0:15
themselves as a technology company it
0:18
shouldn't come as any surprise that there is a lot to see here so let's have
0:23
a look at some of the top Tech Trends here at the auto show
0:37
tunnel bear is the easy to use VPN service that lets you use the internet
0:41
as though you're in one of 20 different countries try it for free at the link in
0:46
the video description first up is phone integration and I mean the real deal not
0:51
just a Bluetooth chipset and a microphone somewhere integrated Chi
0:56
wireless charging pads were on display in the Toyota Prius Prime and Hyundai
1:01
ionic with Honda offering upgrade accessories to enable this functionality
1:05
on key models and Volvo evaluating it moving into the future and Android auto
1:11
and carplay were either big selling
1:14
points or quietly swept under the rug
1:17
depending on who you talked to Against The Tide BMW and Toyota remain committed
1:23
at least for now to their in-house developed connected drive and end tune
1:28
infotainment systems while Hyundai Volkswagen Ford Chevy
1:34
Honda and Audi have already embraced
1:37
both on models like the ionic volt and
1:41
the new A4 with Volvo lagging only
1:44
slightly behind with carplay support available now and Android auto coming
1:49
later on the S90 T8 most brands Ford
1:53
Chevy Audi actually pretty much you name it were showing off evolutionary
1:57
improvements to their phone apps to the point where there's a base functionality
2:03
set that pretty much everyone's got your remote lock and unlock your geolocation
2:09
your car status updates maintenance reminders battery level indicators but
2:14
there's still Innovation here Volvo's phone as a key fob functionality stood
2:19
out to us as pretty cool because it allows your Bluetooth enabled phone to
2:23
literally act as the key to your car and
2:26
not only that but it allows you to share it with anyone else a friend or a family
2:31
member who has the Volvo app installed
2:35
Trend number two has got to be fuel economy BMW had three plug-in hybrids on
2:40
display including the 740e X Drive I
2:44
performance with 14 miles of pure EV range and a 53 MPG equivalent rating
2:50
which is pretty good if you factor in the fun to drivenness of it but not
2:54
nearly as amazing as the new Chevy Volt
2:58
which boasts an incredible f 53 M of
3:01
full electric range with an additional 367 handled by the gas engine if you run
3:07
out of juice not to mention that their bolt electric vehicle boasts over 200 M
3:12
of range at a price point under 30,000
3:15
us assuming full leverage of the available federal tax credits damn not
3:21
to be ignored though Toyota launched the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid whose EV
3:25
range of 22 Mi isn't as impressive but
3:29
whose 80 2 4 mph pure electric top speed
3:32
600 M total range and 120 MPG
3:37
equivalency rating may make up for it
3:40
Honda having been working on fuel sell for decades finally has something real
3:45
to show for it with the clarity fuel cell launching this year in select
3:49
markets if you can find a refueling station Honda claims that it fuels up in
3:55
3 minutes and makes none of the weight
3:58
cargo space or performance compromises of other zero emissions Vehicles other
4:04
notable displays were Hyundai's three discrete models of the ionic a full
4:08
electric a plug-in hybrid and a regular hybrid taking aim squarely at Toyota's
4:13
Prius lineup and Volvo's S9 T8 plug-in
4:16
hybrid both of which hide their batteries either under the rear seats or
4:21
between the front seats for a lower center of gravity and improvements to
4:25
Cargo space as well as interior room oh
4:28
and Volvo also had a seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV boasting 14 M of pure
4:35
electric range with another 350 on gas
4:39
Trend number three is cameras
4:43
everywhere everyone is getting geared up for mandatory rear cameras next year and
4:49
some folks are taking it a step further Ford showed off optional dual 180° fish
4:55
eyes in the front and back with cleaning nozzles for the Explorer great for
5:00
backing out of parking stalls but man
5:03
now you got to have like a bird's eyee View Camera stitching feature like
5:08
Chevy's bolt and volt and Volvo's S90 T8
5:11
or step up your game even further if you want to impress us BMW was showing off a
5:18
fancier 3D model bird's eye view that lets you rotate the car and view the
5:23
space around it and their active Comfort Drive which uses the forward-facing
5:27
camera to analyze the road ahead and pre- adjust your suspension Audi allows
5:33
easy toggling between normal and fisheye views on their forward and rear cameras
5:38
with bird's eye as an added bonus on the A4 that we saw with night vision assist
5:43
thermal cameras available on the Q7 which is not to say that tactically
5:48
placed cameras aren't great for more than just parking Honda's Lane watch
5:54
camera on the clarity fuel cell shows the passenger side blind spot in the
5:58
center 8in touchreen screen whenever you signal right Nifty which I guess ties in
6:04
really closely to Trend number four active safety and assisted driving
6:09
features both of which are just exploding right now Lane keeping assist
6:15
varying degrees of parking assistance Ford by the way is boasting assistance
6:19
for parking and pulling out adaptive
6:22
cruise control with radar and pre-charging the brakes in dangerous
6:26
situations are everywhere but the devil
6:30
is in the details here and automakers have quite different approaches to some
6:35
of this technology BMW's ability to
6:38
automatically navigate stop and go traffic stops working if you take your
6:43
hand off the wheel for longer than 10 seconds Ford for example will merely
6:48
pre-charge the brakes when detecting an obstruction while Chevy will slam the
6:53
brakes for you below 50 mph hoping to
6:56
avoid or reduce the severity of a crash Audi and BMW's systems will Auto break
7:02
below about 25 mph Honda didn't specify
7:06
and Volvo's approach is the only one that specifically advertises the ability
7:11
to detect bicycles and this is new large
7:14
animals like moose in addition to pedestrians and other vehicles so
7:19
depending on whether you want a vibrating steering wheel an audible
7:24
alert a heads up display flashing notification or the car to rent control
7:29
control from you in the event of a problem you will need to pick not only
7:33
the make but also the model of your next car very carefully the last couple of
7:39
mentions here didn't fall neatly into a category but BMW's gesture control
7:44
allows volume adjustments call acceptance and rejection as well as
7:49
manipulating the 3D view of the car by detecting hand waves with a motion and
7:54
heat sensitive roof mounted camera we thought that was pretty cool and the
7:58
Prius Prime probably isn't the last car that we've seen with a massive Inc
8:04
console touchcreen with its 11.6 in 1080P Affair almost entirely replacing
8:09
tactile buttons whether For Better or For Worse
8:14
