0:00 I'm sorry I've been so preoccupied with
0:03 useless expensive crap lately that I've been neglecting the stuff that actually
0:08 works and does so on the cheap well I'm
0:11 getting back to my roots today welcome to Handy Tech under $100 episode
0:26 11 full sale university offers degree programs both on campus and online
0:31 combining creative problem solving with real world experience learn more at the
0:35 link below so first up I've got a bit of
0:38 an odd one I have to confess I just take
0:41 my disposable batteries with me for recycling whenever I have the hankering
0:45 for Swedish meatballs from the cafeteria of the local Ikea I had never heard of
0:50 recharging alkalines but apparently it's been a thing for over two decades with
0:54 the first consumer disposable battery recharger the Buddy L supercharger
1:00 having been released in 1993 now that one didn't really last
1:06 thanks to its tendency to stop charging the batteries early and the extremely
1:11 difficult battery insertion process but I have its great great grandson the
1:16 mighty charger if you throw away disposable batteries you're throwing
1:20 away money as far as I'm concerned and as seen on TV badge might as well read
1:26 shoddy useless gimmick but I figured what the hey let's give it a shot
1:30 so I devised a test putting a set of three Kirkland ablea batteries in one of
1:35 my kids toys recording the discharge time and then with all those warnings
1:41 about leakage or explosions in my mind I
1:44 set up a safe space to recharge them with nothing flammable within 4T in my
1:50 garage my recharged batteries ran for
1:53 less than half of the time of my original test but I've since done a lot
1:58 more research on the topic and yes alkaline batteries can be recharged
2:03 n you can't recharge disposable batteries now you can with Mighty
2:07 charger it needs to happen in bursts to
2:10 keep the battery acid from leaking out the pressure release valve and it works
2:15 best if the batteries aren't fully drained and then even so you'll only get
2:20 10 consecutively shorter Cycles recharges dead disposable alkaline
2:24 batteries up to 70 times that's right if you're lucky compared to hundreds or
2:30 thousands on a proper NIMH but for items
2:34 like kids toys where I don't want to invest in expensive rechargeables that
2:38 I'll probably end up losing when they leave their junk outside in the rain
2:42 this is a great solution here's how to
2:48 order moving on it's no secret that I
2:51 love high-end audio crap the most expensive headphones I own is a pair of
2:56 Odyssey LCD 2s that I picked up used for
2:59 still over over $1,000 Canadian a couple
3:02 of years ago but that doesn't mean that I can't also appreciate value and item
3:07 number two is both the cheapest pair of headphones that I've ever gotten from
3:12 anywhere other than a dollar store and arguably the best bang for thee Buck
3:17 audio device I have ever laid my hands on as far as packaging product
3:23 appearance and included accessories go the Venture Electronics monk plus is
3:29 actually pretty comparable to those Dollar Store earbuds you get the earbuds
3:33 themselves these marvelous foam pads that serve to well pad your ears a
3:38 little bit and increase friction helping keep them in your ears complete with
3:41 bonus color cating red for right blue for left and you get this carrying bag
3:48 that dank memes aside is just a bag it's
3:52 actually made out of shockingly thin plastic and doesn't even reseal it's not
3:56 much better than the free bags at the grocery store for putting your apples in
3:59 funny story though when they first started charging for the regular
4:03 shopping bags at our local grocery store my wife would actually take a bunch of
4:08 those free ones and then put our groceries in them at the checkout she
4:11 only stopped doing it when I refused to continue to go shopping with her out of
4:15 embarrassment anyway I digress what's remarkable about the monk plus is that
4:20 they actually sound pretty darn good the
4:24 closest thing to a fair point of comparison that I have would be apple
4:28 Earp pods which have more thump at the low end and that I personally find a
4:32 touch more comfortable but whose mids are relatively veiled making vocalists
4:37 get a little lost by comparison so yes
4:40 in spite of the price difference I found
4:43 the monk plus more pleasing to listen to
4:46 than Apple earpods wait what's that I didn't tell
4:50 you the price yet oh they're five bucks
4:53 on AliExpress plus a few bucks for shipping I mean sure the build quality
4:58 is nothing special and they don't include an inline microphone or
5:02 controller but at 17th the price if
5:06 you're one of those people and you know who you are who loses your earphones all
5:10 the time come on man just buy seven of
5:13 these and then don't stress about anymore am I right I'm right moving on
5:19 have you ever wanted to recharge your doublea batteries only to go damn it I
5:24 don't have a battery charger on me and even if I did there isn't a wall outlet
5:28 for miles yes the next handy Tech is another
5:32 battery item these are called USB cell batteries and they're made by moxia
5:37 energy limited the difference between these and any other nickel metal hydride
5:42 batteries are several first they are
5:45 only 1300 milliamp hours which both theoretically and in practice is much
5:51 less than the 2,000 milliamp rating of Amazon Basics rechargeables and closer
5:55 to 13 the capacity of a disposable alkaline second they are about
6:02 $10 per battery or about five times the
6:06 price of the aforementioned Amazon Basics so uh
6:12 lonus why well this is pretty cool don't
6:16 let its appearance deceive you the USB cell includes in addition to the
6:20 internal cell DC to DC voltage conversion circuitry a charging
6:25 indicator LED and a USB plug under the
6:29 positive terminal they can be recharged in about 5 hours over USB and while I
6:34 wouldn't recommend buying a ton of them the capacity to cost ratio just doesn't
6:39 justify it if there was a double A battery that I was going to carry around
6:43 in my bag with me for emergencies the convenience here is
6:47 undeniable the last item is another always with me always with you item and
6:52 charging related again in the old days
6:55 every device used a different proprietary vill charger which was a
6:58 total nightmare then everything switched to micro USB a
7:03 completely different nightmare one that's finally almost over with
7:07 lightning hav't taken over all of Apple's mobile devices and USB type c
7:11 riding in on its white Steed covered in shimmering armor for everyone else one
7:16 small problem it means for techies you're carrying around a minimum of
7:21 three charging cables if you want to be ready for your own needs and those of
7:24 your friends so pick up one of these I'm
7:28 not married to a particular brand here but these converter tips are available
7:32 individually or in packs and are much less bulky to carry around than a bunch
7:36 of cables I keep them in my at all times
7:40 bag all right so then as always with handy Tech here's the disclosure bit the
7:44 mighty charger was purchased by me out of morbid curiosity I wanted to know
7:49 what melted batteries look like and I was pleasantly surprised when I didn't
7:52 see them the USB cell batteries were a similar story and the monk plus
7:57 earphones were provided by massdrop a conflict of interest if I ever saw one I
8:02 mean $5 of sponsorship here yeah that's
8:06 right as for my two examples of cable tip adapters uh one was included with a
8:10 ZTE axon 7 engineering sample and the other was purchased by Brandon for his
8:15 own personal use and was then stolen by me when he showed it to me what aing
8:21 chump which brings us to today's episode sponsor full sale
