1:22 Friday where I go to NC and then do W show so it's a total write off and then

1:26 I came in this week worked Monday Tuesdays a Canadian holiday it's Canada

1:41 seriously I I I came in on Wednesday anyway so then I got to work Wednesday

1:45 Thursday this week and that's it I've had four days to do all the things that

3:33 number of reasons also in the news this week 1080p 60 FPS is and I quote a

3:44 it's a console game well yeah the game he's talking about it's we need more

6:18 day the 850 pro50 Pro I'm used to saying

6:22 40 on Tech the site where I still go for

6:26 most of my SSD coverage because they still do a Fant fantastic job of SSD

6:31 coverage so the Samsung had a global Summit they talked about v-nand they

6:36 talked about well mostly they talked about Nan so what's the point of the 850

6:42 Pro what's good about it the 840 Pro has been on the market for a long long time

6:49 now and as disappointing as it is that Samsung hasn't released a new Enthusiast

6:55 professional grade SSD the 840 I was like I lik the 840 why is it

6:59 disappointing yeah no no it's disappointing that they haven't released a new one in so long but the cold hard

7:04 truth is that the A40 Pro never really

7:07 got dethroned nope like it kind of did

7:11 There's higher capacity drives now um

7:14 there are slightly faster drives now there are drives with better performance

7:19 consistency such as the Intel 730 series

7:22 but in terms of just like defeating it across the board the 840 Pro has held up

7:27 incredibly well not to mention that Samsung software suite um enables it to

7:32 perform even better so you can do things like you can cash the drive with RAM and

7:36 all that kind of good stuff as they did release the Evo but are you talking

7:39 about like in that same Series yeah I'm talk well the Evo is not as fast as the

7:42 840 Pro yeah I'm just saying like they they have released another so Samsung

7:47 has dropped the 850 Pro on us now and

7:50 it's faster it's higher capacity it goes up to 1 tbte it will potentially deliver

7:56 higher capacities in the future it actually lasts longer which is the first

8:00 time we've seen that in a while one of the big problems with ssds as they've

8:05 progressed throughout the generations is that newer manufacturing processes have

8:11 actually reduced their lifespans now a

8:14 lot of noise gets made about that by hard drive manufacturers or just general

8:21 you know Doom profits those kinds of

8:25 people but the cold hard truth is I believe it's tech report and I know that

8:29 stre systems have got longterm SSD

8:32 reliability tests where we've got ssds that are rated for X number of terabytes

8:37 that are rating like a petabyte of data

8:40 before they actually even here they're talking about it's endurance rated for 150 terabytes but they have one in

8:45 internal testing and this is for the 850 Pro not for existing drives yeah

8:49 internal testing that has gone through over 8 pedabytes so guys don't read too

8:54 much into those rated specs they have been getting lower as time goes on but

8:58 that's what's great about the this new Nan that Samsung has Unleashed Samsung's

9:02 actually been you know it's funny cuz we always expected it to be you know the

9:06 more the more traditional guys like you know an Intel or a micron to be pushing

9:11 all this stuff forward but um Samsung

9:14 was the first to do TLC so that's three bits per cell in their uh crap I'm

9:20 blanking now what Drive was that model names not good with them yeah I think it

9:24 was the 840 anyway yeah it was the 840 so they were the first to do their a TLC

9:29 n Drive s and they were able to achieve good enough reliability and performance

9:33 to make it a an actual product out of it and now they're the First with 3D so I

9:39 think I don't know that's pretty much it other than giving you guys some specifics so we have a clicky link to

9:44 the exact uh the exact specs here and

9:48 it's funny because specs don't really change that much we're still going to be limited by the SATA 3 interface so

9:53 you're still not going to see more than 100,000 random read iops you're still

9:56 not going to see more than 90,000 random WR iops

9:59 but cool things about it are that the lowest capacity Drive doesn't perform

10:04 that much worse than any of the others this is a 128 gig drive so it doesn't

10:09 perform worse and the 128 gig model is

10:13 the one that they have in testing writing over eight pedabytes

10:17 so typically whatever the lowest capacity one is performs the least well

10:23 because it's not able to take advantage of parallelization in its reads and wrs

10:28 and then it also t typically is not going to last as long because just

10:33 simple it's actually really simple math it's kind of cool how simple the math is

10:36 when you have a higher capacity drive and a lower capacity drive and each nand

10:42 cell has X number of Rights of endurance

10:46 if you write X number of terabytes to each of them you're going to be filling

10:49 this let's say you write up the entire capacity of this drive and it's 10 times the capacity of this you just wrote

10:54 every cell here 10 times and every cell here once so a lower capacity Drive is

10:58 just inherently not going to last as long usually going to be slower it's not going to last as long so theoretically

11:04 if Samsung was running that test on their one tab drive it could have done

11:08 80 pedabytes but that's I mean don't quote me on that that's not a rating

11:13 it's just in theory in theory totally

11:17 not okay just forget I ever said he just said Theory very many times don't forget

11:22 in theory there's a lot of overhead involved in wear leveling and the

11:25 algorithms that keep the nand working for so long that will make it not not

11:29 scale 100% like that let's just be really clear about that in the first

11:32 place um one of the other things that Samsung's really stepping up their game

11:36 with on the 850 Pro is that they're offering a 10year warranty whoa you

11:41 didn't know that did you I didn't know that part yeah that's aggressive 5 years

11:45 was already in my mind pretty aggressive for a storage device I mean when you

11:49 think about what a warranty is a warranty is within the reasonably usable

11:56 lifespan of the product this is going to work dog be confident buying it so for

12:02 something like a computer a three-year warranty is pretty good because you're

12:07 probably going to want to replace it with something Faster by that point or

12:10 you know laptops you'll probably have beaten them up by that point or or or or

12:13 whatever um with the storage device

12:18 especially a little while ago when capacities were really scaling fast five

12:23 years was kind of ridiculous I mean drives that I have that are five years

12:28 old are going to be like 320 250 gig drives like even even 120

12:34 gigaby SSD in five years like dude it's

12:38 like I mean maybe maybe part of it is

12:41 that they're just that confident that they're all going to last so whatever

12:44 we'll just throw a 10 year warranty at it who cares and then maybe part of it

12:48 is just the whole the whole RAM manufacturer mentality where you know

12:52 how every stick of RAM seemingly has a lifetime warranty on it and maybe it's

12:57 just for much the same reason maybe that's exact it 10 years from now no

13:01 one's going to give two craps about this like Edo RAM so whatever lifetime

13:07 warranty if they really want some SD RAM

13:10 or they really want some ddr1 memory 5

13:14 years 10 years 25 years down the road who gives a crap we'll just give it to

13:18 them um for for the number of customers that are actually going to do that

13:21 versus not having a competitive warranty with what your with what the other

13:25 companies are offering I'll be interested to see if other guys match

13:29 this crucial is such a conservative company Intel is such a conservative

13:34 company I mean they blew me away when they offered a 5-year warranty on an

13:37 Intel CPU which let's face it is going

13:40 to last for 5 years or 10 years I mean in general have you ever seen a dead one

13:45 no it just that wasn't like someone

13:49 stepped on this or something like that like one that died in use where the

13:52 person wasn't either a dangerously

13:56 overclocking it or B like physically harmed it probably on purpose they just

14:01 don't die and they still only offer a three-year warranty on their processors

14:06 so I mean for Intel to be confident enough to offer a 10-year warranty

14:10 they'd probably have to be sure it's going to last for like 50 Years anyway

14:14 I'll I'll I'll I'll be interested to see what comes of that um most things are

14:18 over engineered the the rating on how much data is going to go through that SSD is probably over engineered

14:23 considering we're looking at 8 pedabytes in what they're actually doing and 150

14:27 terabytes in the estimation and warranties are definitely over

14:31 engineered if they're if they're warring it for a certain period of time it's

14:35 probably going to last a lot longer than that all right so let's talk a little bit about the changes that they've made

14:39 now I talked about how traditionally as we've scaled down the manufacturing

14:44 process for nend in order to drive capacity up and prices down um the

14:48 reliability and the performance has gotten worse this is just it's just

14:52 because things are getting so packed in that there's things can easily leak from

14:57 one place to another and it just it just doesn't work that well at such a tiny scale so now instead of building out the

15:03 Nan chips two-dimensionally so where they're just spreading things out so

15:07 they have to make everything smaller to keep everything close enough together to even work now Samsung is actually

15:13 stacking it that's what 3D nand is so instead of using a 10 nanometer Class

15:18 Manufacturing process they've actually relaxed to a 40 nanometer Class

15:22 Manufacturing process I mean that's that's like old stuff that's like couple

15:27 gens ago like CPUs that was Advanced

15:31 like this is yeah but that gives them that better

15:35 reliability and that better performance and because they're stacking them they

15:39 can still scale capacity so we could expect to see as they scale the

15:43 manufacturing back down again much much

15:46 higher capacities and much lower prices as time goes on right now it's

15:50 cuttingedge technology you're only going to find it in a pro class product which

15:54 as you can expect the 850 Pro is pretty expensive compared to actually more

15:59 value oriented ssds there's some pretty cheap ssds out there I was going to say

16:02 it's only $10 more for 120 and 240 gig

16:05 capacities compared to an 840 Pro and it is exactly $1 cheaper in the 480 GB

16:11 capacity yeah so that puts it actually very competitively priced against other

16:16 premium drives from guys like Intel with their 730 but not even close to you know

16:22 value stuff like crucial's m550 which comes in at only around just under $300

16:27 for a 500 gig class Drive which is crazy

16:31 I mean is it finally happening are ssds cheap now I don't necessarily think

16:35 we're quite there yet I think I think it's cheap enough that like every single

16:38 time I see a build I'm trying to help them balance their build out so that

16:42 they can get an SSD in there right because it's it's worth it at this point

16:46 but I don't see a ton of people going SSD only systems yet I I see a lot more

16:52 and I am seeing it in general but I still see a lot of people throwing in

16:55 like at least 2 TB hard drive in most their systems yeah now still really big

17:00 and a lot of games coming out like 50 gigs which is insane I feel like I did

17:04 miss something on my blade 14 review now that you're mentioning that now that I'm

17:08 thinking about it the blade 14 is an amazing machine just a spoiler alert

17:12 guys that's actually going to come out sometime next week and for the first

17:16 time ever I awarded something an editor's Choice Award I don't want us to

17:20 start doing that I don't care it's perfect almost it's almost yeah I I'm

17:25 probably never going to award one again in five years I've done it once so so

17:29 let's just leave it at that um but it's

17:32 absolutely fantastic although now that you mention it the problem is that in

17:37 order to make it fit in that amazing form factor they've got one m.2 SSD and

17:43 that was all that was going to fit there is no 2 and 1 half in Drive cage um so

17:48 you're a little bit Limited in terms of storage the the most you can do is

17:53 they've got a 512 gig laptop option and

17:57 then you have to basically buy that up front um they don't even actually

18:00 another knock that I did mention in the review is that it does not have

18:04 upgradeable RAM it has a soldered 8 gigs

18:08 of RAM what there is no 16 gig option so

18:12 they got called out pretty hard for that this this basically perfect judgment

18:16 seems slightly it's have you used it no

18:19 okay well it's pretty amazing I mean having an having an 870m in this no but

18:26 I don't I don't necessarily care about that I don't use the the tabless of this

18:30 very often I mean in my Surface Pro I think I estimated 2% of the time that I

18:35 use this notebook I'm using the tablet that was probably aggressive when I had

18:40 a laptop that could turn into a tablet I actually used it a lot okay but then

18:45 that's it's going to vary so if it doesn't matter to you then it doesn't

18:48 matter to you and the and the 870m doesn't throttle that's kind of cool

18:53 which is it actually boosts a little bit and that was that was two days ago when

18:57 it was super hot yeah yeah that was really so okay we need to I don't like that

20:22 awesome or if they did like if they did like the model like horizontal and

20:27 vertical line the Tesla te I don't think they'd get away with it

22:26 those are both really the same thing also it's very very expensive so I used

22:30 Model E a few years after it comes out

22:34 that's going to be when I go electric especially if they have that very

22:37 aggressive battery swapping stuff going on yes that would be pretty sweet I

22:46 going to be cheaper constructed I'll be surprised if they can achieve the same

22:50 range with it uh they're expecting steel construction instead of aluminum

22:54 construction um it's going to come out after the model X so that's the SUV

23:02 street is it's going to be priced to compete with the Audi A4 and BMW compact

23:06 3 Series so and if if they do this and if they keep dropping rumors and stuff

23:10 like that that means other people are probably going to do it too and competition in the electric vehicle

23:14 space is good yeah I'm super stoked on that I'd love to drive an EV yeah that

23:19 would be fantastic because gas prices where we live are dumb yeah not as bad

23:24 as Europe mind you but still dumb yes

23:55 out and were like no no that's not happening at all at all we're just not

24:02 multiple internal sources coming out saying they haven't been paid properly

24:05 since April and apparently um an

24:09 estimated what was it something like a hundred staff yeah the studio estimates

24:14 that around a hundred people have left after filing grievances a person

24:19 familiar with the studio yes person sorry sorry sorry person familiar with

24:22 the studio uh that about 100 people have left after filing grievances it's

24:27 unclear if they leaving permanently if they're just kind of waiting for krych

24:32 to get their stuff together apparently it's gone as far as employees at krych

24:37 UK are like publicly hoping that deep

24:40 silver buys them so like I think this

24:43 has kind of been going around for a while it's just been under a cap which

24:47 is kind of sketchy cats out of the bag I mean you can't imagine the Xbox One

24:51 launch sales were that amazing especially when rise got slammed by like

24:55 every reviewer ever yeah it really wasn't reviewed very well and then they

24:59 just launched their uh what's this thing what's this game called kex new game War

25:08 something yeah they just launched a freeo playay game I can't even remember

25:11 nobody cared I hadn't even heard of it

25:14 until they just launched it I thought it was Warface but I was like that name

25:18 seems so generic it can't be that yeah

25:21 so War Warface is out um it's on Steam

25:30 I thought it was a console thing at all so it's a free to play/ pay to win type

25:34 game oh that's why I haven't heard of it and didn't care that makes sense oh God

25:42 don't charge much to license their engine and that's something that a lot

25:45 of gamers are concerned about what happens to games that rely on cry engine

25:50 right now I mean is the is the engine going to get ongoing support how's this going to work I mean has krych just

25:55 overstretched their bounds they have what nine Studios now nine locations and

26:00 you're kind of looking at it going well how many games do you actually make like

26:04 what do people do all day krych yeah krych UK closing down isn't going to

26:09 close down the whole of cry no but if

26:12 they can't pay krych UK then that is

26:15 kind of an issue yeah you're right um but I don't know I'm not super worried

26:19 about their engine at this point but then again at the same point in time big

26:23 people like Star seon are just chopping the crap out of the engine anyways so it

26:27 probably won't even matter right because at this point in time I'm sure whatever

26:32 they're working with is so far away from the original design that any updates to

26:37 it they'd probably have to pretty much do themselves anyways so I don't know

26:42 but then smaller Studios that would want to use cryex engine because it is

26:45 beautiful and is actually pushing limits on PC Hardware unlike a lot of different

26:49 engines might have issues because they would have to rely much more heavily I

26:52 mean I think that's the thing that I'll both miss about the most and uh regret

26:57 that they didn't stick to is the fact that they were willing to push the PC

27:02 Beyond its limits and build something that was truly groundbreaking I mean the

27:06 the thing about that though is the last time they did that was a really long

27:11 time ago yes so you kind of look at it and you go okay well how bad do I feel

27:15 for you because you became a big deal

27:19 when you released Far Cry and crisis back to back you were this upstart that

27:24 came out of nowhere and released Far Cry the what was L the first at the time

27:30 what we were calling nextg FPS so it was Far Cry Doom 3 and halflife 2 and Far

27:36 Cry was never even on the list until it came out and people were like what what

27:42 where did this come from literally nowhere like what and it looked as good

27:47 or better than those other games like it was they were in the same class and then

27:52 they released crisis and then crisis 2

27:55 was kind of that but like not as much and then prist is whatever anyway um so

28:01 they got away from their Roots which was building really demanding open style

28:06 games and they got kind of syy about it and then now they did like a super syy

28:12 you know Roman game as a console exclusive and you're just kind of

28:15 sitting here going okay well I'm sorry you're in trouble but not making the

28:20 wrong the Right Moves dog I don't know like they were all they were all butt

28:23 hurt about piracy of Crisis and so they were like okay well um you know know

28:28 we're not going to do PC exclusives anymore and then except that's what made

50:09 everything was published in articles they can't make the guardian remove

50:16 Google no longer return search results linking to that article so you have

50:21 someone who's like the the newspaper collector you could have that site

50:26 stored some you could have that URL stored somewhere and that's not going to

50:29 necessarily go away but it's not going to be like easily researchable anymore

50:32 so that actually seems to raise a whole

50:36 other set of problems because I can see reasons why this should exist you know
