0:00 when I did coverage on my other channel of noct to's fancy new industrial
0:03 cooling fans with ip52 and IP67 ratings
0:08 I got a lot of questions from people about those ratings or more specifically
0:11 I got the same question a lot of times lonus I see those ratings all the time
0:16 and I know that they have to do with Environmental Protection but what the heck do all the individual letters and
0:20 numbers actually mean let's start with the letters IP stands for ingress
0:25 protection which basically means something that blocks entry or access to
0:29 something else but of course depending on the application while sometimes it's
0:33 important to keep water and Tiny dust particles out of something in other
0:37 cases larger objects are the main concern and that's where the numbers
0:41 come in usually the IP rating of a device or enclosure has two numbers one
0:46 to indicate the size of the physical objects it's protected against with a
0:50 second one to indicate the level of water protection that it provides so for
0:55 solid objects the lower ratings are designed as more of an indication of how
0:58 safe personnel working around a piece of equipment will be a first digit of one
1:03 or two indicates that a worker won't accidentally be able to put an elbow or
1:06 a finger somewhere that they could be harmed moving up to a three or four
1:10 means protection against tools falling or even screws or random wires causing
1:15 problems in the equipment and a first digit of five or six means that even
1:19 dust cannot enter the enclosure in any way that would interfere with the
1:22 operation of the device pretty fancy but while dust can cause a slow painful
1:27 death for electronics It's relatively easy to clean or otherwise deal with so
1:31 for us Gadget Geeks the trend towards water resistant Electronics is pretty
1:36 exciting but just like dust the scale ranges from 1 to two meaning it's being
1:40 protected from water dripping from above or at a slight angle with four and five
1:44 promising to keep out water splashed or sprayed from any direction seven and
1:48 eight indicating that your gear is protected from Full submersion at
1:51 various depths and durations depending on the manufacturers rating and special
1:55 ratings with KS on the end that indicate High Press water spray resistance and
1:59 even in close range high pressure high temperature waterproofness but for most
2:04 consumer grade gear you probably won't see those last two and that's most of
2:08 the variations on older products you might see a third digit for impact
2:12 resistance but that has been separated into a separate ik rating now and
2:16 sometimes you'll see an X subbed in for the solid object with only a second
2:19 digit which just means the first test wasn't performed or was deemed
2:23 Irrelevant for some reason use your common sense it doesn't mean that the
2:26 enclosure will allow an elbow to enter but can keep out High pressure water
2:30 although if I could invent such a thing sorry I got distracted there
2:35 anyway let's just wrap this up by pointing out that while Ingress
2:38 Protection is an industry standard rating system it's not the only way of
2:41 testing a product and just because there's no IP rating doesn't mean that
2:45 the manufacture hasn't validated the product gopro's waterproof housing for
2:49 their cameras for example a fairly well-regarded waterproof enclosure has
2:53 no IP rating it just means they might have used a different methodology
2:57 speaking of methodologies I'm not sure if I understand the rationale
3:00 behind fractal Design's latest marketing campaign with us instead of getting me
3:05 to talk about how great their PC fans computer cases power supplies and sexy
3:10 Marketing Executives are they insist on punishing me on camera so when they
3:13 heard about today's topic they kind of went wow great topic lonus let's find
3:17 out what your IP rating is turns out uh not that great what a mess anyway uh
3:22 they want your feedback on this new advertising concept so check out the
3:26 link in the video description to fill out a very short survey and let them
3:29 know if they should keep sponsoring Techquickie in this
