0:07 finally built the gaming pc of your dreams and spent the last two months
0:11 locked in your room playing all the latest aaa titles
0:15 but nostalgia is a hell of a drug and you
0:19 reach for one of your favorite games of years gone by thinking well surely with
0:24 such a powerful machine mech warrior 4 will run better than ever right wrong
0:31 after you dig out an external optical drive to install that christmas gift
0:35 from 18 years ago you discover to your horror that it won't load
0:41 you used Windows compatibility mode but
0:44 nothing happened so what gives
0:47 well it turns out that how much computing power your pc has is only part
0:53 of the story i mean if you think about it the nintendo 64 has more than enough
0:58 power to run the original super mario brothers but that doesn't mean that you
1:02 can just plug an s cartridge into it so here's
1:06 the deal one common reason older games won't play nicely with modern hardware
1:11 is that many of them were written for 32-bit systems you can learn more about
1:16 the differences between these and more modern 64-bit systems up here but for
1:20 this episode the main thing that you need to know is that most modern pcs use
1:25 64-bit cpus and operating systems giving
1:29 them support for more than four gigs of memory and the ability to process more
1:34 information at once but programs need to be coded to work
1:39 with either a 32-bit or 64-bit system
1:44 meaning that if you're running a modern 64-bit version of Windows your pc will
1:49 actually emulate 32-bit mode for any
1:52 programs written for a 32-bit computer
1:55 this includes older games sometimes this emulation works without a
2:00 hitch but other times games just won't
2:04 cooperate for a number of reasons sometimes older games will try to load
2:09 additional but incompatible code often in the form of dll files used by older
2:15 32-bit versions of Windows a Windows update might break a dependency that a
2:20 game relies on or they might not be able to properly
2:24 interface with a 64-bit device driver
2:27 other games might refuse to launch at all because maybe some of their code is
2:31 written for even older 16-bit systems
2:35 which 64-bit Windows editions can't emulate at all or due to draconian drm
2:41 protections like safe disk that are completely incompatible with modern
2:46 versions of Windows and as if that weren't enough you can
2:50 also run into issues with the hardware itself particularly your fancy new
2:54 quad-core multi-threaded CPU
2:58 modern operating systems will usually try to split a given program's workload
3:03 over multiple cores as nearly every consumer-grade pc out there i mean not
3:09 to mention even phones has at least two
3:13 cores in it now this results in tangible efficiency improvements in modern games
3:18 that are written with multi-core cpus in mind but
3:23 it can wreak havoc on games whose code
3:26 just wasn't meant to be split up that way think of it kind of like taking
3:30 apart a lego house versus one made of glued together popsicle sticks
3:35 but Linus is there any way to get my old games
3:39 running or am i up kb lake without a paddle
3:43 well there isn't a foolproof way to play
3:46 every older title on a modern system but
3:49 there are certainly some workarounds 32-bit versions of modern editions of
3:54 Windows are still widely available
3:58 for some reason and it is certainly possible to dual boot your computer with
4:02 both a 32 and a 64-bit os
4:06 you can also use a virtual machine if you need to run a really old version of
4:10 Windows or fire up dosbox if you've got something that's that old
4:15 now if your issues are performance rather than compatibility related due to
4:19 the multi-core CPU issues we mentioned before you can try adjusting the CPU
4:25 affinity in Windows task manager or a third-party piece of software this will
4:30 force your game to run on only one core
4:33 and failing that you can actually try switching off all but one core in your
4:38 BIOS or UEFI so that Windows will actually treat your CPU as a single core
4:44 model furthermore it is amazing how
4:48 resourceful the gaming community is by the way especially when it comes to
4:51 their beloved retro titles depending on exactly which game you're trying to run
4:56 some resourceful folks out there have created guides for dealing with
5:01 antiquated drm schemes through registry hacks and even created fixer utilities
5:06 that you can use to launch your older games with special instructions that
5:10 will make them run more smoothly finally as a last resort actually i'd
5:15 recommend you try this in the first place since it can save a lot of hassle
5:19 there's a reasonable chance that you'll find a compatible version of that game
5:23 that you loved on a reputable digital distributor like steam or more likely
5:28 good old games and they usually cost just a few bucks
5:33 so there you have it you may yet be able to enjoy your
5:37 favorite games from yesteryear if you don't mind getting a little creative
5:42 just don't get too creative and migrate your entire digital life to an old
5:46 school beige box running Windows me
