0:03 oh W oh
0:42 so have you got some old electronics lying around and not sure about the
0:47 proper way to dispose of them here's your first hint as much as you may or
0:51 may not have enjoyed that silly little bit that we did there that was not it
1:07 the Logitech g303 features a lightweight design an advanced Optical sensor with
1:11 Delta zero technology for precise tracking and RGB lighting to match your
1:15 setup check out the link in the video description to learn more now it's no
1:20 great secret that to reduce your consumption or reuse that which has
1:25 already been consumed is better in terms of ecological impact than and recycling
1:31 it but sometimes it happens that you might have an unfortunate run of bad
1:36 luck that causes oh I don't know three motherboards in a row to spontaneously
1:40 die through no fault of your own or here's another scenario you've got
1:44 devices that technically still work but have come to the point where absolutely
1:50 no one not even your weird Uncle who keeps milk crates of electronics in his
1:54 garage is willing to use them so the
1:57 first question I usually get is why can't I just put my old CRT TV or
2:02 motherboard or hard drive in the garbage
2:05 and the answer is that while you actually technically can because most
2:11 garbage collection Services frankly don't have the time or willingness to
2:16 dig through your trash bin to see what you put in there there are a lot of good
2:20 reasons why you shouldn't number one is
2:23 that it keeps chemicals and heavy metals managed correctly E-Waste can contain
2:29 mercury lead cadmium arsenic lithium and
2:32 a wide variety of other harmful or dangerous substances number two is that
2:38 precious materials such as aluminum from casings Copper from wiring or even gold
2:44 from contact points can be recovered through the disassembly of old
2:49 electronics this lessens the need for harvesting new raw materials from the
2:54 finite supply of resources that is our planet Earth and number three even if
2:59 you're not a tree hugger or whatever this should matter to you if you're a
3:03 taxpayer is that it keeps these items out of landfills which means landfill
3:07 spaces conserved lowering the cost of your local waste disposal services and
3:12 in the long term even the cost associated with things like increased
3:16 water filtration if any of these Metals end up in the water supply so then okay
3:22 that sounds great lonus why aren't people doing this then great question
3:26 and the answer is pretty simple it's timec consuming and tedious work to
3:31 safely disassemble these products to the point where they can be reused in place
3:36 of raw materials which means it's actually quite expensive to do so here
3:41 in BC Canada we have what's called an environmental handling fee that gets
3:45 charged on items that can be returned for free Recycling and while there's
3:51 plenty of debate to be had about a mandatory fee at the time of purchase on
3:55 all items I'll leave that to the philosophers but it's quite possible
3:59 your region has a similar program that you can take advantage of and even if it
4:04 doesn't you may discover some random and unexpected ways to dispose of this stuff
4:08 as well Bottle Depot for example in my area are the return point for most
4:13 E-Waste and Ikea of all places has their
4:17 own instore drop off for household battery and light bulb recycling go
4:21 figure and if your area doesn't have anything like this there are services
4:26 like think recycle.com that do charge
4:30 for the items that they can't get any value out of but can actually pay a
4:34 bounty for some other items and they'll do things like refurbished toner
4:39 cartridges and they'll accept and even pay by the pound for phones iPads and
4:44 laptops even if they're completely nonfunctional all you have to do is put
4:49 at least 15 items in a box and ship it off to them if you have enough of the
4:54 acceptable items versus complete junk they're even willing to provide you with
4:58 a free shipping label but wait if this video has inspired you
5:03 to run out and responsibly dispose of your electronic waste there are a couple
5:07 of things you should do first number one see if it still works hey we've got a
5:12 local program called freegeek that is willing to take a lot of old computer
5:16 and electronic stuff and distribute it to people and organizations that need it
5:20 like I said at the beginning reuse is better than Recycling and number two
5:25 while you're at it thoroughly wipe any personal data off of your devices before
5:31 recycling them while most people don't
5:34 even want to see that selfie sex tape you made that night after graduation or
5:38 whatever anyone who does want to see it you probably don't want them seeing it
5:44 so do your do diligence and on the subject of digital
5:49 security it's fairly common knowledge
5:52 among the techsavvy that even in a perfect world text-based passwords
5:57 without additional authentication factors are just not very secure and
6:02 there are a lot of companies out there trying a lot of different things to
6:05 improve this which leads us to today's episode sponsor true Key by Intel
6:09 security it's a password manager that removes the hassle of passwords across
6:13 all of your devices computers phones and tablets with support for Windows with
6:18 chrome and ie support iOS and Android
6:22 you can log into Apps and websites with your face fingerprint or by swiping a
6:26 notification on your personal smartphone
6:30 and it always knows that you're you with multiactor authentication only a
6:35 combination of being on a trusted device passing facial recognition and or
6:40 swiping a notification on your smartphone can unlock your passwords and
6:44 you can add extra factors to passwords you'd like to really lock down or a
6:49 fewer for websites that you'd like to access faster and that don't hold any
6:53 valuable information your try account syncs across all of your devices so be
6:57 sure to download it to your phones tablets and computers you can find a
