0:00 this product brings back some actually pretty amazing memories for me this
0:04 promotional video for the original Voyager air was actually the first
0:08 Revenue generating project that we ever did for lonus Media Group that was a
0:12 really uncertain time for us but we've kind of stuck together through the
0:16 amazing journey that the last year and a half has been and I feel like both my
0:19 team and I have grown and changed so much as content creators in that time
0:23 but what about the Voyager air how has it changed welcome to my video of the
0:29 Voyager Air 2 wireless media streaming drive from
0:38 Corsair the Jazz mini phone and tablet stand from Cooler Master is now
0:42 available in a variety of cool colors from these great retailers click now to
0:45 learn more out of the box the most obvious change is the industrial design
0:49 the Voyager air the red one in particular had an angular aggressive
0:54 looking style to it that I personally really liked and while the bottom of
0:58 this new generation product is buold gold and eye catching with a quality
1:01 feeling soft touch finish on the blue part and a nice grippy rubber ring to
1:05 keep it in place on the table unfortunately this design language
1:08 didn't carry over to the top where instead we find an unexceptional matte
1:12 and glossy black plastic Affair thankfully the glossy plastic accent
1:16 isn't easily scratched but it'll still always look smudgy no matter what you do
1:20 because the buttons for power and wireless are both built into it which I
1:24 guess leads pretty well into a physical tour of the unit on the front aside from
1:27 the aforementioned buttons there are indicators for remaining battery power
1:31 and DC power in then on the back there's a usb3 micro connector for charging and
1:36 data that Corsair includes a cable 4 as well as a 5vt 2 amp power input just for
1:41 charging that unfortunately corer doesn't include the cable 4 in fact the
1:46 accessory package has been slimmed down in a few ways you no longer get a wall
1:51 adapter a handy cigarette lighter to 2 Amp USB adapter or an accessory pouch
1:55 just a drive and a USB 3 cable and while normally I'd complain bitterly about
2:00 this Corsair does get a pass here because they are passing along a
2:05 significant price reduction to the customer so if you really want this
2:08 stuff you can just buy it yourself and you won't be paying any more than the original Voyager air all right so enough
2:13 staring at this black box what the heck does it actually do lonus great question
2:18 inside you'll find a few things first is a one tby hard drive second is a
2:22 wireless network card and third is a large 6200 Milah battery to power both
2:27 of those other things the hardware on its own actually doesn't do much it's
2:31 all about the software with the voyage R so start by powering up the drive and
2:35 turning on the wireless interface wait a minute or two and using a smartphone or
2:38 tablet there are apps for iOS Android and Kindle download the Voyager air app
2:43 connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot that the Voyager Air 2 generates on its own
2:47 launch the app and start setting up your new toy from the settings menu we can
2:51 configure Wireless pass through so devices connected to the Voyager Air 2
2:54 can also access the internet through another nearby Network set up a password
2:58 for the onboard Wi-Fi set up a DLNA media streaming server if
3:02 you want and set up automatic sync for Dropbox or Google Drive a feature that
3:07 makes the device much easier to load up prior to a trip or something very handy
3:11 active transfers is the next button down the Voyager air2 can either stream media
3:15 like the old one or here you can see the que of files that you've selected to
3:20 cach locally on your device to save power I prefer this approach since less
3:25 Wi-Fi streaming will cut down on battery use for both devices you can see and
3:30 manage everything you've cached in the download folder or by using any standard
3:34 File Explorer program on Android anyway speaking of managing files one of the
3:38 big complaints about early Wi-Fi drives was that you couldn't really do that
3:41 through the included apps nowadays with the Voyager rir 2 you can you so you can
3:45 view reorganize rename and delete stuff at will with the only drawback being
3:50 that's a little bit awkward and it's not the only thing that's a little awkward
3:53 about the UI the built-in music player is well integrated on iOS and you can
3:57 swipe up to change tracks and whatnot whenever music playing but on Android
4:01 when you want to get at it you need to launch the whole app rather than Corsair
4:05 throwing it in notifications or providing a widget and another Quirk
4:09 that I noticed here is that it's the only part of the Voyager air app where
4:13 you have to press the top left of the screen to go back because swiping in
4:16 from the left doesn't work which I guess
4:20 since we're in there now is the last stop in our little tour so I showed the
4:24 folder-based navigation and file management none of that stuff was really
4:28 new in the voyage rare software but Corsair has added some other stuff some
4:32 of which is not that important some of which is pretty great so using metadata
4:36 and tags Corsair tries to organize your files for you in four categories music
4:41 actually worked pretty well with it sorting by artist album Etc and even
4:45 doing a pretty good job of displaying thumbnails and whatnot but photos only
4:49 really let me sort by a year videos didn't sort at all with any of my stuff
4:54 even though Corsair said TV shows should split out by season and episode so let
4:58 me know if you guys have a different result there and documents ended up just
5:01 being a bit of a mess of desktop.ini files subtitle files and other random
5:06 junk that didn't fit into the other categories
5:09 now they're kind of getting there but there are a lot of ways that they can
5:13 continue to improve this and I think the big thing missing right now is granularity how come I can only sort my
5:18 uncategorized videos alphabetically why can't I sort by whatever has been most
5:22 recently transferred to the drive and then why isn't there a search function
5:26 so I don't have to rely on tags that sometimes work or manually scrolling
5:30 through endless lists of random files
5:33 which I guess sort of leads me to another positive point it's got support
5:37 for thirdparty media players now so you can use o player or VLC or whatever else
5:42 instead of worrying about running all your videos through handbreak before transferring them to the Voyager air
5:47 this is Handy but my dream device would
5:50 be even better than that while addressing the whole metadata thing um I
5:54 guess I'll need to wait a few more years for this but I'd really like to see something that has a Plex server running
5:59 on it or something like that that transcodes media on the Fly the Voyager
6:03 Air 2 has improved over the original one but not to that degree which leads us
6:08 into our conclusion on the hardware side
6:11 nothing from my big wish list has really
6:15 improved there's still no dualband Wireless a key feature for media
6:19 streaming and wireless still turns off
6:22 as soon as you plug something in via USB meaning that without a DC plug adapter
6:27 you can't power the drive off of an external source and stream at the same
6:31 time on the software side while it's certainly not perfect it is better
6:35 better enough to call it a sequel to the original one even though it's lacking
6:39 the Ethernet port tough to say especially since
6:43 they're not getting rid of the original Ethernet equipped model and that one
6:47 gets all the new software updates as well so this review puts me in a bit of
6:51 a weird position where I have to call the name Voyager Air 2 kind of
6:56 misleading when it isn't better than the first one really in any way
7:00 but I also have to give kudos to Corsair for supporting their 18-month-old
7:04 product with new software when they could have just as easily abandoned it
7:07 and told their customers no you need the new Voyager air to for that so basically
7:12 the same conclusion as last time it's a concept that I like even though its
7:16 utility is limited to pretty specific use cases now with 30% more gen I guess
7:22 speaking of Concepts that I like today's episode sponsor is Ting a company that
7:26 runs on a fantastic concept there are
7:29 us-based service provider that builds their customers based on exactly how
7:33 much they actually use so whether you're a data fiend a texting addict or a
7:36 relatively light user you'll be paying a fair amount for your service but lius
7:40 you might say all these small carriers have terrible reception in arbitrary
7:45 city name here wrong Ting is very upfront about the fact that they are
7:48 running on the Sprint network so you can have confidence that you'll be receiving
7:51 the coverage of a major carrier while paying a reasonable amount for your
7:55 service all you have to do is find out what Sprint service is like in your area
7:58 and you'll have some idea of what's going on they claim that 98% of mobile
8:03 customers would save money by switching to Ting but you don't have to take their
8:06 word for it head over to l.com and check out their savings
8:10 calculator to see if Ting can save you money and if you choose to sign up using
8:14 that link by the way Linus ..com you can save 25 bucks on a new device or receive
8:18 $25 in service credit pretty neat thanks for watching guys like and dislike
