0:00 today I'm going to be unboxing a very exciting product this is the second to
0:06 Market SATA 36 gbit per second SSD so
0:11 this is the Intel 510 Series this is a 120 GB super fast according to Intel and
0:18 I believe them super fast hard drive replacement drive it is high performance
0:23 it is for desktop and mobile system so this is a 2 and 1/2 in drive and it
0:27 includes a desktop installation kit that is how they achieve that so here we find
0:31 Intel's product information so you can see here this is a 510 Series 120 gig
0:36 capacity Drive okay there's not a whole lot else on here other than the pack
0:40 date which is January 28th 2011 so Intel
0:43 being ready for launches as they always are has these boxed up fully retail
0:47 ready to go well before launch this box includes well we'll get to that once we
0:52 actually open it and let's see what else Intel has to say for themselves do more
0:55 wait less super fast hard drive alternative rugged silence solid SATA 6
1:00 gbit per second and 3 gbit per second
1:04 compatible Now Intel with their usual tradition is providing or in line with
1:09 their usual tradition is providing a three-year warranty on this product and
1:12 oh look at this it's not sealed okay
1:16 this side is sealed let's break the seal just because that's part of what I enjoy
1:20 doing there we go ha let's open this baby up I'm actually
1:25 really excited about this so the first
1:28 sha 3 gbit per second SSD on the market
1:31 was The crucial C300 and here we are we
1:35 finally have an answer from Intel one of the big players in the SSD Market they
1:40 really shook things up when they released the original x25 M so there's
1:45 the SSD itself let's go a little bit further in and see what else we got ooh
1:50 I love stickers I actually I actually really love stickers so uh this is a
1:55 pretty nice sticker I would actually be pretty content to put this on something
1:59 speed demon look a barcode all right
2:02 just in case Intel needs to track their sticker inventory Intel
2:07 SATA solid state drive here's a little thing thank you for
2:11 purchasing in a wide variety of different languages basically thank you
2:15 for purchasing okay next we've got one
2:18 of those little mini CDs that I think are
2:21 adorable open that up what's this okay
2:26 installation guide and warranty oh on disc nice okay next we've
2:31 got more environmentally friendly packaging hey look at that it comes with
2:35 a SATA cable that's high class not a very nice SATA cable mind you that's a
2:40 very thin thin SATA cable you might want
2:43 to get your own SATA cable but my assumption is that this is in spite of
2:48 its thinness and flexibility you know you could argue that thin and flexible is an advantage for a SATA cable uh it's
2:53 got to be rated for SATA 6 gbit per second because it does come with a SATA
2:57 6 gbit per second drive and if I could get it to focus we could see what it's
3:02 called here there it is what is that M phenol
3:08 cool okay we've also got a Molex TOA power adapter included in the packaging
3:13 oh look at that a locking SATA power adapter or connector I haven't actually
3:17 seen one of those before interesting okay we got some screws there's case
3:21 screws they include an extra one just in case and then here are screws for the
3:25 SSD itself to bolt to the 2 and 1/2 in to 3 and 1/2 in adapter and they include
3:30 an extra one of those just in case as well nice little touch from Intel here's
3:35 the adapter so you mount one drive on there you mount this in your 3 and 1/2
3:39 in and then you're good to go nice solid steel
3:43 adapter okay now we get to the goods here so
3:48 we've got a careful observe precautions
3:52 for handling this device and that is a
3:56 wow you can only break that sticker once you can see it leaves behind an ugly
3:59 residue okay and then we
4:02 have Oo we have some do not
4:08 eat and the SSD itself so here is the
4:11 Intel SSD 510 series it uses a silver
4:15 housing unlike you know what I think the first SSD sample I ever got was this one
4:22 right here so that is my Intel x25 M80
4:27 gig and it was black and it had kind of a little uh plastic Ridge thing on it so
4:32 it could be installed in varying thicknesses of notebook mounting
4:35 mechanisms so this is actually the next
4:39 Intel SSD sample I've received so it'll be interesting to see in terms of
4:44 Aesthetics and in terms of performance how far they have come so we've got some
4:49 specs here there's the 6 gbit SATA SSD
4:52 so remember too guys that SATA 6 GB per second is physically identical to SATA 3
4:58 gbit per second as well as SATA 1 150 megabit per second so you don't have to
5:03 worry about any backwards compatibility issues physically now some older
5:07 chipsets like maybe SATA 1 chipsets might have trouble with a SATA 6 Drive
5:11 although there's no reason to believe they would necessarily but just
5:15 something to bear in mind Intel does specifically say though that it is
5:19 compatible with SATA 3 6 GB per second and SATA 2 3 GB per second so it's got
5:25 its usual mounting holes on the sides usual interface at the back ual mounting
5:30 holes on the bottom and uh ooh this is
5:33 interesting okay okay looks like we're going to uh looks like we're going to be
5:38 doing a longer video than I had originally thought here because I'm
5:43 going just dig into my backpack
5:47 here find a screwdriver there are no warranty void
5:52 if removed stickers on this drive so we're going to be opening this guy
5:58 up and finding out what there is what Mysteries it
6:03 holds inside so there's one
6:08 screw sorry guys I apologize because it's a six-minute unboxing of a drive
6:13 already but oh yeah performance why don't I talk
6:17 about performance while we do this so Intel spec this drive for up to
6:21 470 megabytes per second read and up to
6:25 315 megabytes per second right speeds so
6:29 what that means is that this is fully
6:33 justified in using a SATA 3 6 GB per
6:36 second interface now there are some SATA 36 gbit per second hard drives out there
6:41 that really don't even begin to approach
6:45 needing that kind of sorry these are really hard to remove needing that kind
6:50 of bandwidth for the amount of data that they can actually read and write
6:55 sequentially now this drive also uses actually okay I'm not going to spoil
6:58 that surprise but in in terms of its spec it speced for up to
7:02 20,000 uh 4K random reads per second and
7:05 50,000 4K random rights per second okay
7:09 it uses here we go Intel flash this is
7:12 34 nanm Flash and a Marvel controller
7:17 let's go ahead and take this PCB out of
7:21 here so it's double-sided Okay so we've got eight
7:24 chips on the one side eight chips as well as what appears to be a cache so
7:29 we've got a controller a cache and then a 16 chip
7:34 solution um Intel also calls out that
7:38 it's specifically compatible with their six series chipsets although it'll work
7:41 just fine probably with any other SATA 3 6 GB per second controller and it is
7:46 available in two capacities the 120 gig
7:49 that we are looking at here today and at launch it is also available in a 250 gig
7:54 configuration do not take your drive apart the way that I have I don't
7:58 recommend it that is not not what tech tips is all about it's about me doing it
8:01 so you don't have to but other than that thank you for watching and don't forget
