0:00 so the server room behind me has gotten a lot of upgrades since the last time I
0:04 showed it off it got a gigantic ups that
0:07 conditions power and access a battery backup and more recently it got an
0:11 upgrade to our solid state editing Nas going from normal SATA ssds to NVMe ssds
0:18 but what hasn't been upgraded is the
0:22 organization this place is a
0:26 disaster and we need to make some space for pet B project a clustered storage
0:32 server that we're working on with Seagate and 45 dries so we've teamed up
0:38 with cableorganizer.com ubiquity
0:41 networks bonded logic Trend net and
0:45 protocase to give this place a complete
0:50 makeover so come along for the ride I mean look at this this is awful
1:06 okay so the plan is as follows clean up of the room clean up of
1:12 the servers cable management of the room
1:16 some reconfiguration and network switch
1:20 movement upgrading our Wi-Fi here to our
1:23 new ubiquity gear making room for the
1:27 petabyte storage cluster by consolidating some of the roles of some
1:31 of our servers um adding acoustic dampening to
1:35 the room so that it won't be so loud out here in the studio and adding dust
1:39 filtration to the room so we won't end up with the same situation we were in
1:44 before with everything being clogged up
1:47 with dust uh you might you guys might
1:50 remember Johnny from previous episodes of lus tech tip such as installing a UPS
1:57 I lost the paper like planogram thing
2:01 for our patch panel um so you're on figuring out what
2:06 everything is going to right y exactly okay cool
2:11 um so oh wow are you rolling roll roll roll
2:17 are you rolling okay so that is a perfect example of what can happen when
2:23 you cable manage your server room like this I just accidentally stepped on one
2:27 of our power squids and I knocked out
2:30 oh no did I knock out new wanic
2:34 server oh my goodness okay um well at any rate sorry
2:40 Johnny I was just going to say so all the like bonds that we set up in the
2:44 switches I don't think a single one of the storage servers other than new wanic
2:49 which I just put in still has any of that stuff still plugged in this is one
2:54 of the inest stations for footage and
2:57 we're going to be moving this actually to um to a tower out here instead cuz
3:03 what we discovered was as much as it's nice to have like your GTX 1070 6950x
3:10 extreme Edition systems like behind locking key we discovered that there are
3:14 just issues with usb3 signaling that
3:18 prevent all these high-speed peripherals from working properly with long cables
3:22 that go into the rooms do the aors need to be on the
3:26 internet not anymore not anymore Bo
3:32 link State change to down well while we wait for uh the Vault
3:38 to sync file systems and all that we can move pretty much everything that's not
3:44 bolted down out of here all right okay
3:49 you know it's it's amazing how my server room could end up in this condition
3:54 right uh oh balls uh this is my current
3:59 solution for a pdu or power distribution
4:03 unit so I have these um like Dollar
4:06 Store Power Bars um we have to shut this
4:10 thing down uh hey Dennis are you still
4:14 copying files on the in just one
4:18 yeah uh yeah sorry I have to shut it down we uh we need to tear apart the
4:23 room there okay so I had all matching drives in it Cate 6 terb ones but we
4:28 completely ran out of capacity nowhere to put anything and I had to expand it
4:32 somehow so
4:35 I oh to those of you asking what happened to the 10 TB drives that were
4:40 in the desk oh suddenly there are 6 tab
4:43 drives yeah these are not officially supported
4:48 by unraid yet so I can't boot this system unless I pop these drives wait
4:54 for it to boot up and then hot swap them back in pretty much everything is off
5:00 now yeah it's so quiet now what I've
5:03 never done this before
5:07 uh the lifeblood of my company I'm just
5:10 like pulling it apart no big deal right no big deal okay
5:17 the like janky lifeblood of my
5:21 company it's like we're media production company literally nothing can happen
5:26 without this room operating at 100% or
5:30 at least the like 60% that it
5:33 does oh okay okay this feels so wrong
5:38 right now the power bar is connected to the
5:44 power squid the power Squid's connected to the
5:48 other power squid actually no this power Squid goes
5:53 straight into uh the back of the UPS
5:57 okay so that's not that's not that bad two layers of uh ow oh ow that
6:03 hurt no it's fine I'm fine just hit
6:06 myself in the face I got to tell you I have actually
6:11 lied to the staff about outages before
6:16 yeah where they've been like oh what happened and I I was like oh yeah it was
6:21 like h a crash but like I stepped on a
6:24 power cord yeah oh my goodness I just pulled this
6:28 power supply out was that not
6:32 locked there we go
6:35 jeez that's on one of the new servers too what's my excuse for that the way
6:39 these are cable managed is like horrible stuck in there yeah it makes it very
6:45 difficult to get at anything I have a plan for these so once
6:50 everything's out of here we're going to like drill a hole on the top of the uh
6:54 in the top of the cabinet what is this
6:58 oh man yeah there's a lot of unnecessary cables going out through the wall here
7:03 maybe this is so funny look at this here's like my pathetic attempt at cable
7:08 managing back when there were only five
7:11 going there and then I just like all these are not cable manage cuz
7:16 they went in after the fact woo okay wow that makes a big
7:22 difference
7:30 power
7:33 cables you know what's funny too is we just bought a bunch more power squids
7:38 and Power Bars cuz we were out of them and I'm returning like seven to the
7:45 population I think this is about as torn down as it gets until it's time to start
7:49 pulling out servers beautiful yeah really not my favorite rails yeah got it
7:56 oh my goodness it's so dusty ew so while
7:59 I'm dusting out all the server rooms server rooms server rooms Johnny's
8:04 working on is getting all of the switches taken out of the rack because
8:09 every single one of them needs to move
8:13 for us to do our new cable management
8:20 schema ah this is our oldest
8:23 switch I've never actually blown it out
8:27 before this one's kind of a funny config the uh guy from datac
8:33 cat recommended like a modern core i7 and like all this good stuff and I'm
8:37 like could I just put some old Hardware that I have lying around he's like yeah
8:41 I guess so so got like a p80 motherboard
8:45 with like an 860 or an 875k or something
8:49 like that and we do get like random restarts from time to
8:53 time so that's another reason to move this over to a virtual machine
8:59 oh Smokin there we go okay go ahead so
9:05 these are both fully solid state new servers yeah you got it
9:10 yep okay yep that's you know just the
9:14 entire archived history of everything LMG has ever
9:24 made I got to be careful with these ssds
9:35 hey P I'll show you something that hasn't happened since we moved in
9:42 here oh the door still won't close damn
9:48 it yeah the door closed on the server
9:52 cabinet we've partnered with Intel and telesign to talk about two Factor
9:57 Authentication it's a pretty important topic and if you
10:02 care about online security you should definitely have it activated wherever
10:07 possible if you don't know what two-factor authentication is it's an
10:11 additional layer of security that you can add to your account beyond your
10:15 password in fact we have a full video about it that you can check out here
10:18 enabling it minimizes the chances of having someone gain access to your
10:23 account even if they key log your
10:26 password for example tons of websites have the feature but it's up to you to
10:31 enable it so participate in Intel's turn on 2fa campaign today all you have to do
10:38 is turn on two Factor authentication for your primary email address and one other
10:43 account after you've done that head to Twitter and use # turn on toofa for a
10:48 chance to win free pizza how can you go wrong tell aign will be giving away 40
10:53 free pizzas every week and Intel will also be giving away a Lenovo Yoga 910 as
10:59 the grand
11:03 prize
11:12 awesome um we put this by the door what
11:15 could go wrong
