0:00 so today we're going to be doing an unboxing of an ASUS lcd monitor this is
0:04 an ultra slim model the ms-236h
0:08 and there's not a whole lot you can tell about it from the outside of the box so
0:12 i'm going to go ahead and just start getting this guy opened up here you can see that the box
0:16 is in like 300 million different languages so that's useful you can put
0:21 this on display in a store no matter what country you happen to be in
0:25 okay let's get this box opened up
0:30 i don't remember if i mentioned already but this is an ultra slim model
0:34 maybe the cameraman can indicate to me whether i said that already yeah
0:37 apparently i did say that already so basically all we're going to do today is
0:41 we're going to unbox this thing get it set up and then plug it into the ASUS
0:47 notebook that i unboxed the other day so i just took out the panel i can already
0:51 tell it's very thin and uh here we go let's have a look at
0:56 the included accessories so the first thing we find on the bottom
1:00 side of this foam is
1:04 this
1:10 huh well we'll figure that out in a minute okay the other things we find
1:15 inside are a power brick so because it's
1:18 so slim they actually were not able to build the power adapter for the monitor
1:22 into the panel so it just has it's a small tiny power brick i mean this thing
1:26 is no big deal 2.1 amps 19 volts and then you've got an adapter cord for that
1:32 and then included cables they've got an HDMI to dvi cable that is smart you know
1:38 what i really appreciate this because very few people have dv guy out on their
1:43 computers these days and since it's a HDMI in i mean the signal's the same
1:48 there's no disadvantage to adapting dvi to HDMI versus using native dvi or
1:53 native HDMI so including a cable like this allows them to save
1:58 whatever they save by not integrating a dvi port and it still gives you the
2:02 convenience of being able to plug into dvi on your computer awesome next we
2:06 have a vga cable just your bog standard
2:09 blue vga cable okay so we're on a quest now to figure
2:15 out what this thing is
2:19 i've never seen something quite like that before
2:23 but i'm hoping that once i get the monitor out of the bag it will become
2:28 apparent what that is okay so the first thing you notice is
2:32 this is as advertised very very slim so it's
2:36 only about the width of my finger and it's very very light as well
2:42 and so you can see why don't we start at the back actually let's start at the top
2:45 so at the top you got some ventilation holes so that's going to keep the the
2:49 excess heat coming off of the light and the other electronics under control and
2:53 then why don't we move around to the back where we have what appears to be
2:57 the mount for the stand so i'm going to go ahead and assume
3:01 that this is something to do with the stand for this monitor
3:05 although i would be lying if i said i could figure out
3:09 just how it works uh-oh hopefully i didn't break it oh
3:14 okay so this plugs in this goes in here
3:18 okay that goes there
3:21 and then you screw this in
3:24 okay so that's getting much tighter now i think we're there
3:28 okay and then this which i thought i broke but it looks like i didn't goes
3:32 there is that is that really how it mounts
3:38 yeah okay well
3:42 mystery solved that is how to mount the monitor
3:46 okay great well why don't i grab the power cord we'll hook this thing up and have a look
3:53 i thought i had just kind of gone crazy there and i couldn't i thought maybe it
3:57 was like a a ring that goes between the monitor and
4:01 the stand or something like that but um
4:04 no no that's the stand very creative definitely something
4:08 different you know if you want a monitor with a different looking stand
4:13 then you can get this one okay let's plug in
4:16 the power get this plugged in actually let's go
4:20 let's have a look at the front first okay so this is a um
4:24 a 23-inch monitor and it has a 1920x10
4:28 resolution so that means that it is hd so 16x9 aspect ratio
4:34 why don't i start taking off some of these protective stickers here so you
4:38 can see ASUS is using a highly glossy finish for this monitor
4:42 which as long as you don't touch it is definitely very very very nice looking
4:48 and although the screen itself uses
4:51 a matte finish a anti-reflective finish
4:54 so personally i really prefer that you don't get the same
4:58 vibrance that you get with your colors as you do with a glossy screen but you
5:03 do get more accuracy with the colors and you also
5:06 usually the ones that have the matte screen tend to be higher quality panels
5:10 is my experience so touch sensitive button right there and then all of the
5:14 buttons for the adjustments over on this on this side here are touch sensitive so
5:20 that's pretty cool so why don't we hit the menu button
5:23 let me see how does this work okay so if i touch that do i hold that
5:32 interesting so if i press menu what happens
5:37 maybe the buttons below or above well why don't we have a look at the
5:40 back of the monitor first and then we'll figure that out later i haven't actually
5:43 shown you all of the input options yet so around the back we've got our power
5:48 input then we have a kensington lock so you can secure your monitor if you're in
5:52 an office environment or you need to secure your monitor then you have HDMI
5:57 in vga in and headphones for HDMI that's
6:00 pretty cool okay so why don't we just plug this into the computer that i have
6:05 running in the background here this is the ASUS gaming notebook that we unboxed
6:08 the other day and i'll plug that into the HDMI port
6:12 and hopefully it's going to be pretty straightforward to get this thing
6:15 running okay yeah it's detected
6:20 and we're going to press that
6:25 and there we go
6:29 i think hmm
6:34 monitor is on and soos logo
6:38 and i'm going to press it again and it says vga no signal so maybe what
6:42 we have to do is select a different source HDMI eg okay yeah the touch button is
6:48 working so it's touch sensitive i've selected HDMI input and there we go it
6:52 is working that was relatively straightforward let's see
6:56 if i can adjust the brightness a little bit here so brightness
7:00 oh oh cool okay so it's got a few different presets so you got standard
7:04 mode theater mode gaming mode which basically turns up the
7:08 gamma night view mode scenery mode and standard mode
7:12 menu button seems to be working now which is much much improved anyway thank you for
7:17 checking out my unboxing of the ms-236h
