0:00 this may be the most expensive keyboard
0:03 we've ever tested individually addressable RGB keys
0:09 no cherry mx switches with custom keycaps
0:14 no Thunderbolt free pass-through with
0:18 triple OLED displays no it no it's got none of those things
0:24 it's the completely wooden hand-crafted
0:27 in japan keyboard from hakoa priced at
0:31 nearly 1400
0:34 us dollars but is it at all worth it
0:39 or does it get chopped by this 40 dollar chinese
0:43 keyboard that we bought on amazon
0:46 speaking of things that are worth it by the way tunnelbear tunnelbear thinks the
0:50 internet is better when everyone can openly access the same content so try

1:09 available in either maple or walnut from responsibly managed forests we're going
1:14 to start with a look at the illustrious hakoa keyboard ki meaning both wood and
1:20 tree in japanese see what they did there simply put it's a work of art the 89
1:26 gently concaved keycaps are cut from a single panel of wood with their relative
1:31 position preserved such that the natural wood grain pattern is visible on the
1:35 finished board the keys contrast subtly with the
1:39 chassis which is one solid piece even on the back where they cared enough to
1:44 carve a recessed bevel so that the board is easy to pick up off the desk turning
1:49 now to the poop end of the stick we've got the 40
1:52 cooler tron other than the fact that this board is indeed made of wood its
1:56 appearance is not that similar to the hakoa key
2:02 okay hand carved sustainable bamboo
2:06 sure i guess but there's no cohesive color scheme and
2:10 the keys chassis pieces and the media keys have no consistency in the
2:15 direction of the wood grain then making matters worse at the top of
2:19 the board the wood motif is disrupted by an obnoxious cooler tron sticker and a
2:24 nearly useless power indicator led that
2:27 i would gladly trade in for caps and or
2:31 num lock lights something hakoa managed to include and in a way that actually
2:36 enhances the look of the board let's go back to the hakoa and look a
2:40 little closer the laser etched letters on the tree
2:43 board have amazingly sharp corners like they are they are perfect to the eye the
2:49 tactile guides are both elegant and functional and the keycaps are aligned
2:53 in perfectly straight rows one of the weakest points of the cheaper boards
2:58 looks on top of that poor key stabilization makes the spacing between
3:02 letters uneven assaulting your eyes and that impression is only made worse upon
3:06 closer inspection excusing even the corrugated look of the bamboo wood grain
3:12 the keycaps legend is etched with a degree of precision that i could
3:16 charitably describe as serviceable except for this internet explorer
3:20 looking key that won't be servicing me at all
3:23 when it comes to general build quality from a more keyboardy standpoint honestly neither of
3:28 them is the best we've seen i mean look at that flex hakoa
3:33 though at least to their credit all the keycaps are aligned and sit at the same
3:37 height by comparison check out coolertron's ragged afro and low rider
3:43 style question mark while we're at it
3:46 the edges are pretty rough the f9 key is randomly darker and the key guides
3:51 subjectively mind you are a little too subtle to be really useful
3:56 now some have complained that the legend on this one can be difficult to see
4:00 particularly in the dark but cooler tron claims that the symbols become easier to
4:05 read after two weeks of use presumably thanks to finger crud filling up the
4:09 grooves yummy so for build quality and style points
4:14 i'm giving it to hakoa it it even feels and smells way more
4:19 woody than the cooler tron which might sound inconsequential but it's actually
4:23 kind of the whole point here it's wood
4:26 all right then what about the practical aspects of this showdown the bamboo
4:32 board believe it or not is actually surprisingly decent to type on since
4:35 it's one of those memcanical keyboards meaning that the switches are membrane
4:39 but a small lip on the keycap gives the stroke a more tactile feel it's not as
4:45 loud as a set of cherry mx blues but it is louder than your typical membrane
4:49 board it's got a bit of a weird layout since it's a full 104 keyboard with a
4:54 numpad but then with compact navigation keys
4:57 but i might even go as far as to say that i like typing on it at least i
5:01 would if it weren't for that astonishingly heavy space bar
5:06 like this stupid thing takes the force of thor's hammer to press down
5:10 it's shorter than normal and it sits
5:14 left of center leading some typists to
5:17 accidentally hit the alt key instead alright then
5:21 but what about typing on a keyboard that is 35 times the price well to put it
5:26 plainly this membrane is mush
5:30 city people who aren't accustomed to mechanical boards might not notice but
5:36 those who are and who might be considering the hikoi
5:39 ki are barking up the wrong tree so to speak and this one's got a weird layout
5:45 too it's like japanese but with an english legend
5:49 which is great if you're japanese and you want to type in english but if
5:53 you're used to a north american keyboard like i am you will be annoyed by the
5:58 shortened enter and backspace keys you will have no use at all for the keys
6:03 that japanese speakers use to switch between their various alphabets and you
6:07 probably won't be a fan of the even stumpier space bar
6:12 though it should be noted that this one was actually easier to use because at
6:16 least it's centered so which one's better
6:19 well truthfully in spite of the awful space
6:23 bar the bambooler tron is probably the better typer so while you can get a real
6:29 mechanical keyboard at this price point the novelty makes it maybe a decent buy
6:35 especially since unlike the hakoa key
6:38 it's wireless then again we couldn't even slide the little door shut without
6:43 it breaking as for the keyboard i believe them when
6:47 they say that each individual unit is made by a japanese master craftsman in a
6:52 labor-intensive process at a rate of just
6:55 one per day unfortunately that craftsman
6:58 didn't spend any of that time on things that keyboard enthusiasts
7:02 actually care about to be clear no one here hated it i'm just a little
7:07 disappointed that someone could spend so much time making such a beautiful object
7:12 then charge a sizeable chunk of cash for it without even doing the requisite
7:16 market research to realize that for one thousand three hundred and eighty six
7:20 dollars we expect a braided cable
7:24 so then which one would i rather have in
7:28 my home office
7:31 honestly neither of them they're both kind of novelty items
7:36 though at least one of them is priced accordingly
7:40 i can't believe that we paid for this thing i feel like a total sap
7:46 that was awful but what's not awful is ting the mobile
7:50 carrier that's focused on customer service and customer satisfaction first
7:54 when you call ting you do not speak to a robot you get put through directly to a
7:58 person and you don't have to pay extra for that kind of service you pay only
8:03 for the air time that you use with the average ting bill only 23 bucks a month
8:08 per device and if you're stuck in a contract and switch to ting they'll even
8:12 cover 25 of your cancellation fee up to 75 bucks they've got new lower mobile
8:18 data rates data's now just 10 a gig beyond the first gig and every single
