1:07 so this idea was actually pitched months ago in a writer's brainstorming meeting
1:12 when well let's just say we got totally off
1:16 topic discussing old computer hardware memes but instead of making a case made
1:20 of fans we should do a case made of radiators right and it should have no
1:25 fans at all yes
1:31 well somehow that made it onto the production
1:35 calendar with the original plan actually being to basically no actually to
1:41 exactly just jury rig together every
1:44 radiator in the warehouse with some l brackets we had lying around and zip tie
1:49 in a motherboard power supply and graphics card that got canned pretty
1:53 quickly and the project evolved into its second form a bunch of radiators
1:58 attached with l brackets and some metal mounting brackets for the
2:02 internal hardware courtesy of our friends with the machine shop that
2:06 totally isn't the only reason we hang out with them after school proto case
2:11 then by this point if we're gonna get some custom mounting hardware we might
2:16 as well create our own frame for the radiators right
2:19 yeah obviously so it was off to autodesk
2:22 inventor where a bunch of time was spent measuring and mocking up the brackets
2:26 required for our build as well as for the case frame itself
2:30 we ended up with a shape that's actually sort of reminiscent of a pc case but
2:35 without front fascia or side panels
2:39 or a bottom i guess it is to a case kind of what a
2:42 go-kart frame is to a car but
2:46 these uh feet that we got from mnpc tech are pretty cool and anyway it's perfect
2:51 for our purposes since it is perfectly
2:54 sized for ek's ultra thick xc series
2:58 radiators in the 360 millimeter variant
3:01 and then it's also got another spot on the back for the three by three 120
3:06 millimeter rad that we've had sitting around unused in the warehouse since
3:10 2013. for style points for this build we went
3:14 with hardline tubing using fittings for all of the bends giving us a finished
3:19 product that i wouldn't think would be
3:22 beautiful to most people in like a traditional sense but that has a raw
3:27 industrial look to it that i personally absolutely love
3:32 and the real story here isn't beauty anyway but rather pushing the limits of
3:36 performance and cooling so let's take a look then at the insane specs that we
3:42 loaded it up with for testing we started with 18 cores of pure Intel
3:48 core i9 power then we threw in 64 gigs of quad channel
3:54 sodium ddr4 from g skill 64 gigs and a
3:59 whopping 3 by 960 gigs of NVMe SSD raid
4:04 0 goodness though we actually ended up needing
4:08 those high capacity drives for another project but
4:11 their 240 gig siblings look pretty much the same oh and then we threw in a gtx
4:17 1080 because come on what i9 rig doesn't have a bitching GPU
4:22 finally at the heart of all that the way that we fit this much radiator power
4:26 into this much space was asrock's brand new x299e itx with a custom bits power
4:34 full cover block that thankfully replaces the micro sized vrm cooler on
4:40 this puppy okay then enough about that how does it
4:45 perform we decided to test our creation a couple
4:48 of different ways first with no fans in
4:51 it at all except for the one that was built into our silverstone 800 watt
4:57 modular sfxl power supply
5:00 and that idle mission accomplished our temps were near
5:05 ambient with our pump handling all of these radiators like a champ with that
5:11 said a system like this when it's not doing anything doesn't
5:15 kick out a lot of heat so we added a CPU load measured the
5:19 results and ended up even more impressed
5:22 even at this power level we are easily dissipating all of the heat and keeping
5:27 our processor at a safe temperature but then what about the graphics card
5:33 no problem so i think at this point it's safe to
5:36 call the project a success it should be noted that the fan in the power supply
5:41 did spin up while gaming adding to the noise already being made by our d5 pump
5:47 but thanks to the massive radiator surface area this is still among the
5:53 quietest systems we have ever encountered even at full load and
5:58 perhaps the coolest thing about it is that by borrowing a page from the build
6:02 that originally inspired it we can take it of course to a completely new level
6:08 now we weren't able to fit fans onto all of the radiator spots but
6:13 even running at a low RPM we ended up with some seriously impressive cooling
6:18 results so then conclusion i guess
6:22 if this was a product sent to us by a manufacturer asking for an objective
6:28 review what would we say well in this exact configuration we're
6:33 looking at almost twelve hundred dollars worth of water cooling hardware
6:38 so we'd start by saying that you might wanna think about saving a few bucks by
6:42 using soft tubing at the very least
6:45 but we'd also say that you cannot question the performance of what is
6:51 effectively an 18 by 120 millimeter
6:55 radiator setup and you can't question the fact that it
6:59 not only ran passively but also did so
7:02 with performance that wasn't far off what you'd expect from decent
7:06 aftermarket cooling systems so
7:10 it's not a great value but it's definitely rad
