0:00 LED lighting many of you may use it in your PC to illuminate your sick build or
0:04 give it a cool color effect that matches the rest of it however today I'll be
0:07 talking about LED lighting for video production and why we decided to adapt
0:11 it to light the majority of the videos we make here at Linus Media
0:21 Group Intel has brought ddr4 to the mainstream with their core i76700 K and
0:27 core i56600k processor check out the link in the video
0:31 description to learn more so to understand how we came to where we are
0:35 today we have to go back to the lights I started with starting with one of the
0:39 classics this is the standard LOL tungsten fixture it's a flood light
0:43 which utilizes an incandescent bulb that draws a rather High 1,000 Watts from the
0:48 wall it packs quite a bit of punch but your power bill will start to rack up
0:52 using several of these for too long not to mention how hot the light itself gets
0:57 after only a couple of minutes of use making it much more difficult to operate
1:01 tungsten lights have long been the staple of lighting for anyone doing video work for decades but because of
1:06 their high power draw and heat output they can be a less attractive option to
1:09 work with when you need lots of light set up at once and are tight on power
1:13 distribution this brings me to the next solution that we had fluorescent lights
1:17 and in this context specifically compact fluorescent lights or CFLs like this
1:21 impact softbox which can take a total of four CFL bulbs the benefit to a light
1:26 like this is that they are generally a much lower power draw to the previous
1:30 tungsten the main problem with them for our use is that the bulbs that can
1:34 typically used in a fixture like this are not of the highest quality when it
1:38 comes to color CFLs specifically also do not lend themselves well to dimming so
1:42 the control you have over the output on these types of Lights is a bit lacking
1:46 overall while we did end up using the CFL softboxes for a long time here on
1:50 lus Tech tips I've been continually looking for a better solution since the
1:54 color from the CFLs even when properly white balanced left something to be
1:58 desired this brings me to our main fixtures of
2:03 choice and what I use to shoot over 80% of what we do here at Linus Media Group
2:07 high output LED lights and in this case westcott's Flex LED kits for a long time
2:12 LEDs had a very bad reputation when it came to using them for video or
2:16 photography work this attitude towards the mainly stemmed from the vast
2:19 majority of LEDs available in the first few years being garbage in terms of
2:23 build quality features and particularly color this was the main reason I had
2:27 held back from using them since I had not found any LEDs that were better than
2:30 our overall setup LEDs in the beginning tend to have nasty green or magenta
2:34 color spikes not unlike poorly made CFLs
2:37 now however LEDs have been refined to be of a much higher quality the westcot
2:41 flex have become one of my favorite lights to use around the office simply
2:44 because of how fast they are to adapt to any situation as well as their excellent
2:48 rendering of skin tones compared to LEDs I've used in the past with LED lights
2:52 like the flex I can travel to any location that has any wall power and not
2:56 worry about blowing a circuit with any of the lights that I want to use thanks
3:00 to LED's far more efficient power draw the opposite is true if I ever wanted to
3:04 utilize lights like our little incandescent since blowing a circuit even in the studio is a constant concern
3:10 if I'm not careful with power distribution the flex system like other
3:13 LEDs can also utilize a portable battery system allowing us to use the lights in
3:16 places where we cannot draw from the wall like in a car or on location
3:20 Outdoors an example of how I'm currently using one of our Flex lights is in our
3:24 Workshop set i'm utilizing one of our midsize Flex lights as a fill light for
3:27 both sides of the set in this inexpensive 30-in China ball and because
3:31 of the flexibility of the design I've simply folded the light into a cylinder
3:35 and clipped it to the inside of the China ball super simple on the recent
3:38 video that Luke did on the steam VR performance test which you can watch
3:41 here I used flexes to set up each location we shot the video in I had a
3:45 fairly limited amount of time and I hate doing math so instead of calculating if
3:49 I could blow a circuit running all of our tungsten lights and instead of using
3:53 the fluoresence which can take a while to turn on using the LEDs made sense and
3:57 helped me speed through the setup process so in conclusion I like many
4:01 others had my reservations for utilizing LED lighting for video production but
4:04 since Linus would kill me if I accidentally kept leaving lights that
4:08 Drew 1,000 watts of power constantly LED lights like the flex light have become a
4:12 good solution to simplify the way that I work and for the curious I would highly
4:16 recommend seeing if LED lights would fit your workflow and
4:20 needs and on that subject race Rackspace
4:25 is the top tier managed cloud computing company and they've got dedicated
4:29 storage options to meet the performance security network capacity and compliance
4:35 needs of pretty much anybody I mean if they don't have it then it's probably
4:39 not not there they're backed by their fanatical 247 365 support and they're
4:46 inviting all of you to their interactive Deep dive sessions they take an hour out
4:51 of every week or two to discuss the benefits of dedicated Solutions and
4:56 their place in a cloud enabled World
4:59 they have upcoming events and recorded Google Hangouts available on topics from
5:03 security to compliance to Performance and cost they will provide you with
5:08 downloads to reference architectures ebooks and white papers on the sessions
5:13 landing pages and it's a live and active
5:16 participation so you can go and ask real
5:19 questions to real people and interact with them their next sessions are on
5:24 moving to the cloud and leaving your VMware deployment behind and performance
5:29 require IRS improving operational efficiency check out the details in the
