0:07 today i have an unboxing of an item that looks not very interesting a single
0:11 power line adapter from netgear why is this cool
0:17 well because it is compliant with the
0:20 draft standard 1905.1 hi-fi or hybrid fidelity standard
0:26 from qualcomm so what's interesting about that is that it is going to turn
0:31 power line into something from something that's kind of niche uh requires
0:36 multiple adapters and isn't really integrated with the rest of your network
0:40 in a meaningful way it's going to turn that as well as wireless access points
0:44 that operate on powerline and wireless range extenders into something that
0:48 automatically provides fail safes automatically
0:52 picks the optimal path for your network to travel in order to give you the best
0:56 possible networking throughout your entire home so that sounds like very
1:00 vague and very nebulous so what i'll do is i'll give you guys an example over
1:04 here no i'm gonna bring it over don't worry here i have a 1905 compliant
1:08 router so this router has your standard wired wireless interfaces and it has a
1:14 plug that goes into the wall and turns your
1:17 entire house into a power line ready network right here i have a completely
1:23 the wrong brand power line adapter this is netgear
1:26 the router that i have is d-link
1:29 but it has the hi-fi software loaded on
1:32 it which means that it can communicate with this in fact all hi-fi compliant
1:37 devices will with one button
1:40 configuration figure out how to communicate with each other in order to
1:44 pick the best possible path so here here's my hypothetical network so i've
1:48 plugged this into the wall i've got some computer plugged in here i've got a
1:52 wireless uh phone here my phone is operating off of wireless and then i
1:58 take this powerline adapter and i go plug it in somewhere else entirely okay
2:04 so if i have all of my network devices enabled on say something like a notebook
2:09 i it will go wi-fi automatically
2:13 now with this software patch assuming all of my adapters and all of my equipment is
2:18 compatible what it'll do is if i plug into here
2:22 it'll automatically go over power line if i plug into a wire it'll
2:26 automatically go over wired so what it'll do is it'll intelligently figure
2:29 out the best possible path so if i have a tv let's say my tv has built-in wi-fi
2:34 okay and then i have something else plugged in
2:38 by Ethernet so it'll automatically go okay the
2:42 quickest possible way the best possible way with the best signal is to go
2:46 through Ethernet and then go wirelessly to the tv or it
2:50 might decide that's not the best what if my house is really big and i have either
2:54 a power line or some other kind of access point that or a range extender
2:59 set up on my network your range extender as long as it's hi-fi ready
3:03 your okay get this your router will know
3:06 to take the wired signal and pass it not directly to the tv but
3:11 to the enabled range extender which will then pass it to the tv if that is the
3:15 strongest signal that it can achieve so that's what's cool about this it will
3:19 allow us to take power line which i'm a huge advocate of if you guys watch any
3:23 of my videos you probably already know that and turn it into something that
3:26 works seamlessly between manufacturers right now the only way to set up
3:30 powerline is you go Ethernet cable from the back of your router into a power
3:34 line adapter power line adapter into the wall and
3:37 then you have another power line adapter somewhere else that goes out with an Ethernet cable to something else well
3:41 now we're taking out one of them so we're reducing the overall cost of
3:45 implementation for powerline and we're making it more interoperable so you
3:49 don't have to worry about oh if i buy this powerline adapter now and i want to expand my network later and i can't get
3:54 it anymore it's not going to be compatible you don't have to think about that anymore as long as it's 1905
3:59 compliant then you'll be able to use completely
4:02 mismatched hardware like this and build your network in a way that is
4:07 seamlessly upgradable and intelligently decides what is the fastest way to move
4:12 your data around that seems like a very good thing to me and since this is
4:15 technically an unboxing of the powerline av500 adapter i should probably talk
4:18 about this guy a little bit it's got a gigabit connection on it and
4:23 that's not necessarily something you might consider relevant but it is
4:27 because even though it's only a 500 megabit per second power line adapter
4:31 many 500 megabit per second power line adapters and 200 megabit per second
4:35 power line adapters include only 100 ports which means that unless you're
4:39 using multiple adapters in which case it behaves more like a hub you are actually
4:42 going to be limited by this port rather than by the power line interface itself
4:46 so why would you need a 500 megabit per second power line adapter well if you
4:50 wanted to stream multimedia multiple hd streams and have a gigabit connection
4:54 you would need that otherwise a 200 megabit per second connection is
4:57 probably fine you can actually stream hd over 200 megabit just fine as long as
5:03 you aren't running multiple powerline adapters because like i said multiple
5:06 powerline adapters will act as a hub so
5:10 that means that instead of sending the data only where it goes
5:14 powerline will actually transmit the data to every node on the network and so
5:18 you can end up with a lot of overhead if you have a whole bunch of powerline
5:21 devices so i'd say anywhere from you know two to probably around five is
5:25 about all you really want to do although most households won't need much more
5:29 than that so thank you for checking out my unboxing of the powerline av 500
