0:00 back at ces 2017 we got our first look
0:04 at the Corsair concept slate a
0:07 theoretical spiritual successor to the
0:10 big bold and beautiful 900d fast forward
0:14 to today and we somehow got one of the only two prototypes in existence here in
0:20 the lab what are we gonna do with it well
0:24 how about a balls to the wall 18 core
0:27 workstation whoa yeah
0:31 wait the producers are telling me that it
0:34 will also have a second rig in it for
0:37 gaming this is madness
0:41 but you know what isn't madness tunnelbear tunnelbear makes it easy to
0:44 privately and securely browse a more open internet to try tunnelbear for free
0:48 go to tunnelbear.com LTT
1:00 to give you an idea of how big this case is the box that it came in is big enough
1:06 for me to comfortably fit inside and
1:10 hey when you're this big there's a lot to talk about so let's
1:13 jump right into an overview of the slate
1:18 anyway it features nearly 360 degree tempered
1:22 glass coverage save for the angular top brushed aluminum accents both of the
1:27 side panels rock strong hinges with magnetic catches and they open like
1:32 suicide doors for what i'm assuming is extra style points now most hinged side
1:36 panels actually do open this way but there's something extra special feeling
1:41 about these ones maybe thanks to their sheer girth and weight
1:46 each air intake comes with what are likely the largest slide-in air filters
1:51 of any case ever though i guess that comes with the territory then moving on
1:56 to the inside there's mounting for a whole heck of a lot of hardware
2:01 and since we have a lot more to cover in this video we're gonna do this in
2:06 lightning round fashion here in no particular order the slate has mounting
2:10 for two motherboards five gpus eight
2:13 ssds five hard drives thirteen fans two
2:17 quadruple one twenty millimeter radiators a triple one forty millimeter
2:20 radiators two power supplies
2:24 and probably a dog or three and believe it or not we're planning to
2:27 make use of all of that space with full
2:31 custom hardline water cooling first some planning though
2:35 yes we plan let's talk about our parts list and do a
2:40 dry fit to ensure a that everything is working and b that it will actually all
2:45 go in there so the final system is going to be kind of a mullet uh business so that's like
2:51 content creation 3d rendering etc in the
2:54 front and then party that's gaming in the back the ultimate best of both
3:00 worlds within a single tower though like
3:04 a mullet it clearly won't be for everyone let's start with the content
3:08 creation rig in typical LTT fashion it's
3:11 the best of the best Intel's flagship 18
3:14 core 7980xe might not be a great value for like
3:18 adobe premiere but it does allow for the virtualization
3:22 of four quad-core systems with two cores
3:25 left over to run the hypervisor and for
3:28 3d rendering and blender it absolutely
3:32 slays in the same spirit of overkill how about
3:35 four quadros with a serious amount of motherboard to accommodate them all ASUS
3:41 rampage six extreme was up to the task with all the pci express lots that we or
3:46 pretty much anyone could ever need triple m.2 slots for some rated 480 gig
3:52 NVMe goodness 10 gig networking and lots
3:56 and lots of RGB actually our planning is set to white for the color scheme we
4:00 have planned so haha take that 2017.
4:05 to feed those 18 cores with sweet sweet bits and bites Corsair somehow managed
4:10 to get us 128 gigs of their vengeance RGB
4:14 it's entirely possible that we are single-handedly causing the continuation
4:19 of the global dram shortage so sorry about that and then as for a GPU
4:24 choosing one was a bit of a challenge a challenge in the sense that convincing
4:29 alex to let us disassemble the 16k gaming machine that he's been using as a
4:34 solidworks workstation since then was a challenge
4:38 not in the sense that we actually had a ton of quadros lying around to choose
4:42 from so these four p5000s
4:45 they don't really match our color scheme but they conveniently support ek's
4:49 universal 1080 water block so that is going to be fixed by the next video each
4:55 GPU here has a cool 16 gigs of vram and
4:59 2560 cuda cores for our power supply we went with the
5:03 Corsair ax1500i it's one of the only units on the market
5:07 that can handle everything in this system then we added some sexy white
5:11 gray and blue cables from cable mod
5:15 on to our itx gaming rig this one is a whole other ball game instead of
5:19 focusing on quantity like say cores or
5:23 gpus it's all about quality now the core
5:27 i7 7700k isn't technically Intel's top
5:30 consumer CPU right now but with a little bit of overclocking we aren't really
5:35 making any compromises here because like we're still talking about 22 processing
5:40 cores in a single box the GPU was an easy choice here we went
5:45 for NVIDIA's gtx 1080 ti which should handle gaming all the way up to 4k
5:49 resolution with relative ease and then we actually managed to get two more 16
5:55 gig dimms of Corsair's vengeance RGB ddr4 bringing our case total to a
6:00 whopping 160 gigabytes of RAM all of that fits
6:05 neatly into ASUS z270i which shares a similar monochrome aesthetic with our
6:10 rampage board and of course has even more RGB which again we're probably not
6:14 going to use and then this rig has to slum it with a single 480 gig mp500 NVMe
6:21 SSD for the os and any important programs or games finally it gets
6:26 powered by Corsair's sf600 power supply
6:29 which also gets the same cable mod treatment to stay consistent with the
6:33 rest of the build while we're around the back here let's
6:36 talk storage each one of our systems will get its own
6:41 triple 480 gig SATA SSD raid 5 array for
6:46 super fast but not as fast as NVMe
6:50 storage then for mass storage the main
6:54 workstation system has an additional three 12 terabyte seagate iron wolf pro
6:59 drives that could actually be set up as a nas for both rigs with virtualization
7:06 actually it could probably serve the rest of the house too if you're into that sort of thing
7:10 even with though all this incredibly op
7:13 hardware the slate still looks almost
7:16 empty so hopefully water cooling components and lighting will fill it up
7:21 a little bit more in part two but before we get to that we want to show you guys
7:26 some baseline air cooled numbers for our rig as expected we're looking at pretty
7:30 good temperatures on the main system with knocked out nhd15 on a 7980xe and
7:36 then unsurprising GPU thermals for cards that are installed this close together
7:40 our gaming system was a completely different story though since we could
7:44 only fit a Noctua l9i in the space
7:47 available temperatures on our 7700k were
7:51 basically pegged at 100 degrees even with the absurd 30 to 50 throttling we
7:57 encountered definitely no thanks to the massive
8:01 airflow restrictions in the form of the four quadros and the 1080 ti hopefully
8:06 though we'll be able to do a little bit better than both of them with a couple
8:09 of d5 pumps and some thick radiators but
8:13 again you'll have to stay tuned for part two for that
8:18 speaking of part two have you ever had one of your devices and it's in two
8:23 parts and you want to put them back together wow that was painful ifixit has
8:29 got the tools for you not to mention the guides ifixit is all about helping
