0:00 my first xiaomi phone was the mix 2 a cutting-edge nearly full display phone
0:06 that gearbest.com helped me get my hands on last year
0:10 and that i abandoned reviewing after spending four hours fighting with
0:15 bootloader unlocking crap in an attempt to load the english rom on it
0:19 only to find out that xiaomi had
0:22 a bloody english version coming a couple weeks later
0:27 anyway the me mix 2s so called for its
0:32 speedier snapdragon 845 processor
0:36 presumably is better across the board anyway
0:39 including the out-of-the-box support for
0:42 english yes but i still can't figure out why
0:47 anybody in this hemisphere is buying premium phones from brands like xiaomi
0:53 is there something on the surface that i am missing here
0:58 like for example a sponsor for this video like madrina's coffee madrina's
1:03 coffee blends specialty cold brew coffees into 16-ounce grab-and-go cans
1:07 for everyone's convenience check them out and use offer code Linus to save 40
1:12 at the link below
1:23 it's really easy to fall in love with the mix 2s it manages to have the sex
1:27 appeal of a nearly bezel-less design coming just one percent shy of the
1:32 screen ratio of the iphone 10 and that's without resorting to an unsightly notch
1:38 and the work that they've put into their ceramic coated back has paid off in
1:42 spades glass-backed phones are back in vogue
1:46 now to enable wireless charging but
1:49 as hard as you might try a glass back will never feel as premium
1:55 nor be as durable as this and after a similar amount of time in my
2:00 pocket my oneplus 6 is noticeably more
2:03 scuffed up and it's packed full of all the right
2:06 hardware sporting the latest generation snapdragon 845 processor up to eight
2:11 gigs of RAM up to 256 gigs of non-expandable storage blah blah blah
2:14 blah blah so it's super fast like you guys get the point and the price is
2:19 right too lining up right across the oneplus 6 as a flagship grade phone for
2:25 hundreds of dollars less than you would pay a tier one like apple or samsung
2:30 and it's got lightning fast fingerprint unlocking the ability to choose between
2:36 button-based or gesture-based navigation and even wireless charging which as we
2:41 outlined in our video recently has the potential when used properly to improve
2:46 the lifespan of your non-removable but respectably sized 3 400 milliamp hour
2:52 battery so uh
2:56 wait why was i so down on this thing a couple of minutes ago
2:59 i still can't figure out why anybody in this hemisphere is buying premium phones
3:04 from brands like xiaomi that seems kind of unfair doesn't it i
3:08 mean even the dual rear camera absolutely blows away previous
3:14 generation efforts from chinese phone makers like this low light shot here
3:19 does have more noise than any other camera that i tested but it avoids the
3:24 over sharpening of the mate 10 pro and the undesirable flaring of the
3:29 galaxy s9 so i mean at least xiaomi
3:33 isn't actively processing the image to make it worse
3:36 and then in this challenging situation the me mix 2s ends up noisier than
3:41 samsung and with less true-to-life colors than the oneplus 6 but it looks
3:47 better than both the iphone 10 and the pixel 2 xl and under ideal conditions
3:52 you can get some really nice images out of it so let's talk about some of the
3:57 weaknesses of the me mix 2s the earpiece
4:00 speaker isn't amplified for stereo sound
4:04 there's no water resistance at least nothing officially ip rated
4:08 1080p slo-mo only goes to 120 FPS rather
4:12 than 240 the display is ips rather than
4:16 OLED which means almost no potential for burn-in
4:19 but at the cost of ambient or always-on
4:23 technology and there is no headphone jack so you
4:26 will need to pull out an adapter every time you want to watch my little pony at
4:30 the back of the bus without anybody finding out
4:33 so all that is kind of a drag
4:36 but again it's hundreds of dollars less for top
4:40 spec hardware and it's got no display
4:44 notch so i can accept that stuff even if i don't
4:50 like all of it the part that is unforgivable is the
4:55 software miui is like going back in time to when
5:00 samsung still thought that having a bunch of bloat in there okay well hold
5:05 on samsung still has a lot of bloat in there so
5:08 um okay whatever in xiaomi's defense
5:13 some of the stuff that they include is legitimately useful like a screen
5:17 recorder app and a quick link to my downloads
5:21 but there were just so many annoying things that i ran into that ground my
5:26 gears from having in my pocket for two weeks
5:29 let's take google hangouts if i got a message an hour ago but left
5:34 it unread because i wanted to deal with it later every new message that i get or even
5:39 opening up another conversation sometimes will make it pop up again
5:44 why when i create a folder on the home
5:48 screen it doesn't pull up the keyboard automatically for me to start typing
5:53 why the included weather app wants access to
5:57 my phone for some reason when all it
6:00 should need is my location not to mention that it cannot be removed
6:04 or even hidden so you have to create a
6:07 useless crap folder iOS style there's no
6:11 obvious way to expand a notification from the lock screen and reply to it
6:16 which is good for security but i would like to at least have the option for my
6:20 convenience i can't install netflix off the app store the workaround seems to be to
6:25 track down the apk and install it manually
6:28 it wakes the screen for notifications which is nice but not when you lift the
6:33 phone something that i've come to take for granted these days and there is no
6:36 hardware button to launch the camera yuck now taken
6:41 individually every one of those things would seem
6:44 like a pretty insignificant little gripe
6:47 and there are things that their software does reasonably well so their screenshot
6:51 management something that i use a lot blows one pluses out of the water
6:56 and a separate account for another user is super handy if i want to give the
7:00 phone to my kids but i don't want them accessing all my stuff
7:04 the bottom line though is that this device was annoying to use for me
7:10 and not just compared to a flagship one like the s9 plus compared to other
7:15 devices that cost the same xiaomi would do well to take a page out
7:19 of oneplus book on the software side of things
7:22 there isn't really such a thing as stock Android anymore i mean even
7:26 google's own pixel lineup customizes stock Android
7:30 but they would do well to try to get a
7:33 lot closer because the hardware and the design are already really
7:38 impressive so i'm looking forward to seeing continued improvement
7:44 speaking of improvement the only thing that could improve this video is this
7:48 message from our sponsor Corsair Corsair's unplug and play series will
7:51 get rid of the wires in your life the dark core RGB sc mouse is quick
7:56 featuring one millisecond 2.4 gigahertz and low latency bluetooth connectivity
8:01 and if you opt for the wireless charging model you can actually charge it with
8:04 Corsair's mm-1000 or any compatible qi wireless charging
8:09 pad their k63 wireless gaming keyboard features the same low latency connection
8:14 options and cherry mx red switches with a blue led backlight and you can check
8:18 out their entire lineup at the link below
