0:00 I've been sitting on my review
0:01 of the Oppo Find X for weeks now.
0:04 Not because I didn't wanna do it,
0:05 but because I've actually, in my opinion,
0:07 very patiently been waiting for them to fix
0:10 a game-breaking bug that has made the phone infuriating
0:13 for me to use as a daily driver.
0:16 Well, it's still not fixed, but the clock's run out
0:19 and we're just gonna have to go ahead with this.
0:22 Is the phone with arguably the world's sexiest design
0:27 actually any good?
0:29 Or are we just being expected to spend
0:31 a thousand US dollars for a fashion statement?
0:43 One of the first things I do with any new device
0:45 that isn't an iPhone with Apple's Taptic Engine
0:48 is turn off the haptic feedback.
0:50 Android devices suck at this basically across the board,
0:53 but the Find X's is particularly bad given the price point.
0:58 And you guys are probably sitting there thinking,
1:01 wow, that's an awfully nitpicky thing to open with
1:04 on a device review, but it kind of sets the stage
1:08 for my overall impressions of the Find X.
1:11 More on that later though.
1:12 First, let's get to the good stuff.
1:15 Nothing, nothing I've ever touched feels quite as premium
1:20 as the Find X.
1:21 Oppo and by extension, their subsidiary OnePlus
1:24 have spent years playing catch up to the Samsungs
1:27 and the Apples of the world,
1:29 but the Find X is clearly a statement piece
1:33 that stands entirely on its own.
1:35 The gentle notch on the back,
1:38 and the way that the rear cover accent color shifts
1:41 from subtle to bold depending on the angle
1:44 gives it a truly distinctive look.
1:47 And furthermore, the form factor,
1:49 not to mention the balance of this thing
1:51 is damn near perfect.
1:54 With gently curved Gorilla Glass 5
1:56 on both the front and back
1:57 that tapers to a nearly seamless transition to the chassis
2:01 that manages to fit comfortably in your hand
2:04 pretty much no matter how you want to hold it.
2:07 That is,
2:08 assuming of course that you can keep a handle on it at all.
2:10 This is an exceptionally slippery phone.
2:13 My unit actually ended up falling off of a surface
2:15 that was only very gently inclined
2:18 minutes after I had placed it there
2:20 because of subtle vibrations from a nearby speaker.
2:23 Fortunately, there was no damage,
2:24 which was a bit surprising,
2:27 especially given the engineering marvel
2:30 that is Oppo's front camera and facial recognition system.
2:34 Simply swipe the lock screen or open up the camera app,
2:38 and you'll be greeted with a competent little selfie camera
2:42 and a sophisticated facial scanning array
2:45 that managed to match the speed of the iPhone 10
2:48 in my testing.
2:50 And actually the good news keeps rolling here.
2:52 The specs of the Find X are right on par
2:55 with any other flagship phone on the market,
2:58 meaning that you'll be enjoying the best experience
3:01 that Android has to offer,
3:02 and you'll look good doing it,
3:04 at least until Snapdragon 855 shows up
3:07 in the next few months.
3:08 And, wait, hold on a second.
3:10 Sorry, did I say the best Android has to offer?
3:13 No, it's not that.
3:15 It might be the best that Oppo's ColorOS has to offer,
3:19 but ColorOS is quite frankly,
3:22 not representative of the best that Android has to offer.
3:27 There are just so many usability issues here.
3:30 I mean, first up was the impossibility
3:33 of setting up an Oppo account for recovery purposes.
3:37 Long story short,
3:38 I finally thought through the steps
3:39 of multiple instances of verification
3:42 with no copy paste allowed for whatever reason,
3:45 and got to this Chinese site
3:46 that according to my in-laws
3:48 said something about being verified.
3:50 And then I tried to log in
3:52 only to be told the account isn't active,
3:55 and it's still not active apparently.
3:57 Then I was really impressed
3:59 by the way that Oppo handles junkware installation,
4:02 giving you the option on first boot to nuke it.
4:06 That is until I realized that there's lots of things
4:07 that Oppo can do.
4:08 There's lots of stuff still on the phone,
4:10 and there is no way to switch
4:12 to an app drawer style home screen with the stock launcher.
4:16 So what that means is that anyone who's not a power user
4:19 is gonna end up with a useless junk folder,
4:21 like on the iPhone.
4:24 Let's continue.
4:25 I'm not really one to complain
4:27 about the visual style of an Android skin in general,
4:30 and ColorOS mostly seems fine to me,
4:34 but, and this one might actually be a first for me,
4:37 the system font,
4:38 really grinds my gears and not for like artsy reasons.
4:42 I just have a much harder time telling at a glance
4:46 if my messages are unread in my Gmail app, for example.
4:50 Now to Oppo's credit, the Find X has great battery life,
4:54 but I was pretty annoyed
4:56 when I found out one of the reasons why.
4:58 It turns out it's been putting my Hangouts app
5:00 to sleep entirely without asking me
5:04 if I wanted that behavior.
5:05 Go ahead, David, send me a Hangout right now.
5:07 So what happens is I just don't get my notifications
5:13 until I open up the app manually,
5:16 at which point I will get spammed
5:18 by everyone who's been trying to reach me for the last hour.
5:22 This is the thing I reported to Oppo three weeks ago.
5:26 There's the ping.
5:27 That currently has no ETA for a fix.
5:31 Then buggy behavior in Chrome and that usual nonsense
5:34 where Netflix has to be installed manually with an APK,
5:38 instead of through the Play Store on some Chinese phones.
5:40 It's just icing on the cake.
5:42 I mean, yeah, every one of those things,
5:45 except the Hangouts thing, that's really stupid.
5:46 Every one of those things is a pretty minor issue
5:48 on the surface.
5:50 But the long and the short of it is a phone is,
5:54 it's like your daily companion.
5:55 You take it with you everywhere.
5:57 It's about the experience.
5:58 And I didn't like using this phone.
6:01 It just cuts a lot of little corners
6:04 for the sake of being sexy.
6:06 Like that crummy vibration motor
6:07 that I mentioned earlier.
6:09 And it just doesn't do enough to redeem itself in my eyes.
6:12 The camera launches quickly,
6:14 but it can't be triggered with a double tap
6:16 of the lock screen.
6:17 And it is decent at best, especially given the price.
6:22 And this pain train is just leaving the station, folks.
6:25 The Find X lacks NFC,
6:26 making two-factor authentication more of a chore.
6:29 It's not waterproof or even water resistant,
6:32 presumably due to the sliding camera mechanism.
6:35 It doesn't have wireless charging.
6:37 It doesn't have a micro SD slot for expansion.
6:40 It doesn't have a headphone jack.
6:42 It doesn't have an always on display
6:44 or even wake on lift,
6:46 meaning that you will need to unlock the screen
6:48 and swipe it to activate their facial recognition
6:51 every time you want to turn it on.
6:52 And the display isn't HDR certified for Netflix,
6:57 which results in noticeably worse image quality
7:00 to go along with the degraded
7:02 mono speaker listening experience.
7:06 Bottom line,
7:07 considering buying the Find X, get a Note 9.
7:12 It's better in every measurable way.
7:17 So thanks for watching, guys.
