1:02 well there's any audi and in betweeny like there was before
1:07 audi has more fans blowing out i think all the
1:10 fans blowing out any has all the fans blowing in and in
1:13 between e is fairly balanced they have all been running for over a
1:19 year behind the old set but then we built this mezzanine
1:24 that we're standing in and then we tore down that set so once the mezzanine was
1:28 done and before the set got torn down they got moved up here to the office but
1:32 they were out in the warehouse under the worst possible conditions literally
1:36 construction zone let's not entirely dismiss the
1:41 possibility that we will learn something today
1:44 even if what we learn is that we're idiots and we don't know how to perform
1:47 a controlled experiment so which one is supposed to be the worst by the
1:51 conventional wisdom i think most people
1:55 think that all in is the worst okay so let's get the other ones no wait wait
1:58 wait no no all out is supposed to be the worst but all in these are these aren't
2:02 so the top and back aren't this is supposed to be the bad one
2:06 okay all out and then it sucks air into the crevices yes yes okay okay so this
2:10 is the one we start with so the outside isn't really something
2:14 to judge because they would have all had a bunch of dust settle on the top
2:18 and it's not that terrible i mean like i'm gonna do one streak on
2:22 the power supply yeah i mean it's not great it's not great um
2:27 having a look at our fan though
2:30 really makes me wonder how it is that people get their computers disgusting
2:34 enough it's like to be like gummed up wow there's a there's cobwebs in here
2:39 that bottom filter was definitely doing something
2:43 and this is audi this is audi so that means this one isn't pulling through a
2:48 filter it should have been sucking all the air in from elsewhere so this is
2:51 another thing we have to be careful with this this is another thing where it's fairly case specific because a lot of
2:56 cases don't have that huge filtered mesh on the bottom so you can also see here
3:00 that with the audi case we've actually got a lot of dust build
3:04 up here and you can assume that for every bit of dust on this mesh
3:08 yeah more got pulled in yeah actually this is
3:11 a good thing well sort of a good thing but it's a good thing to see so our
3:14 graphics card does have a dust bunny inside it yeah
3:18 so that's some build up so our CPU is good yep so on the top was good so it
3:23 actually didn't suck that much in because it was blasting everything out
3:27 which makes sense so the CPU is like sheltered almost because everything
3:30 around it was like no get out yeah so you can actually you can see some dust
3:34 streaks on these cable management holes and then but not much i bet you the
3:38 graphics card was breathing through here and through here power supply is clean
3:42 because it's through a filter actually that area of the filter is pretty concentrated
3:47 any dust that's caught in this filter was already in the computer
3:53 okay interesting so that's all pulled from
3:56 inside and these fans have a fair amount of buildup in them actually i think the
4:01 main takeaway with this one is that even in a construction zone
4:06 where clearly there was a lot of dusty buildup on top
4:10 most of your dust is coming into your case from the bottom
4:14 so if you put your computer on the ground because we didn't have
4:18 fans blowing out at the bottom that's right yeah you might have a bad time
4:21 wanna do the other extreme the test is still bad we're already learning
4:25 something hold on this is the one that is sucking everything in this is
4:29 everything in yeah so theoretically yeah this isn't going to be good either
4:33 well no okay let's start with the bottom okay
4:38 ah interesting that's weird
4:43 the power supply area doesn't have much dust no it doesn't
4:46 because the air is blowing out of here getting
4:50 filtered and then being sucked into here there's two fans like hold on there's
4:55 one two three four five fans
4:58 worth of pressure going out of here this effectively has a skirt around it oh
5:03 yeah okay so there's dust on this but it's not on the inside it's on the top
5:08 yeah it's definitely on the top that's so weird so the power supply
5:13 is completely clean yeah
5:16 how interesting that is interesting see we are learning things i did not see
5:21 this one coming that is okay that's cooler than i expected i will definitely
5:24 give it that i want to see the front okay
5:28 it's filtering stuff this is telling us that this case's intake system is like
5:34 not that great because these are about as dusty as the other one this stuff is
5:37 on the outside because it's pulling through that makes sense
5:42 oh some dust like flew away when you did that like and
5:46 it's loose which is interesting
5:49 our graphics card has no doubt that's a little more gnarly than last time
5:53 definitely more dust just like CPU because there's okay there's also
5:57 definitely more dust on the back fan CPU and the top
6:01 so GPU is a little bit better power supply is better this case does
6:06 not have filters on the top of the back so you don't get too experienced so the
6:09 main takeaway from this one is that more
6:12 airflow right around an area is going to give you a much much higher
6:16 concentration of dust and that again poor planning
6:22 is ultimately what's going to kill you yeah is the graphics card better or
6:26 worse on this one oh it's way worse way worse
6:29 so the GPU over there had to breathe in through this which was very apparent
6:33 yeah and it breathed in junky dusty air that's right this one is actually
6:37 breathing good air but that's the only piece and the power supply
6:41 i wouldn't have thought that having a filtered fan like blowing towards the
6:46 graphics card would affect the movement of the air inside like the currents
6:51 inside enough to be the difference okay so this
6:55 is sort of the um like the recommended
6:58 way so it's neither one extreme nor the other most people would go with a setup
7:03 similar to this so it's important to note that even though we've actually got
7:07 four fans pulling in and two going out the ones coming in are filtered
7:12 so these filtered ones coming in should have much less airflow than the
7:17 non-filtered ones going out yeah so right off the bat our CPU is pretty good
7:22 i would say almost as wow almost as good
7:27 but not quite there is still no not
7:30 quite at all there's definitely still noticeable dust
7:34 and that one was like actually clean so this one what's interesting is that even
7:38 though it's using a poor method of keeping dust out of
7:41 your system what it does do is it focuses all the
7:45 dust that it does pull in on the bottom and then sucked it all through that
7:49 filter for this particular case and here a bit yeah and it's going to change with
7:52 every case okay should we have a look at the filters yeah the bottom first yep okay i'll tilt
7:57 it okay so as expected
8:01 this one doesn't have an air curtain around it so the power supply does draw
8:06 air through the filter filter didn't even stop everything nope filter didn't
8:10 stop everything at all and there's a lot of dust on this yeah this is easily the
8:14 most concentrated wow there's like hairs
8:19 look at this there's like strands of wet okay there's a little bit of that on any
8:23 yeah that makes sense because these are pulling in right
8:27 yep yeah
8:30 ugh and like it plumed
8:37 okay so that's as expected so no dust bunny in the GPU
8:41 GPU fan mostly clear this one had more
8:44 fans and got slightly more total dust which
8:48 kind of makes sense makes sense and the filters are slightly more clogged which
8:51 makes sense but overall i'd say it's probably more balanced
8:55 the CPU got hit but not as hard as it did
8:58 on the really bad CPU case yeah but not as good as it did the other time
9:03 but not as well as much as this one yeah internally so it ended up being in
9:07 between which is kind of what we were aiming for we
9:12 just didn't know it was actually going to work that way
9:15 here you go then the main takeaways are
9:19 on your intake fans you want to have filtered air to the
9:23 greatest degree possible and the more airflow you have
9:27 the more dusty buildup you are ultimately going to have yeah i think a
9:32 balanced approach is good but you're gonna have to think about your
9:36 particular case your particular setup like if you're on the floor then one of
9:41 the big things we learned is you want a bunch of exhaust on the floor yeah to
9:44 keep dust away from your system it actually works yeah yeah
9:47 and then the other big takeaway is that freshbooks is the small business
