0:00 dark mode has swept over the internet
0:03 like a dark grey tidal wave with hints
0:07 of dark blue nowadays whether you're on reddit twitter youtube or basically
0:12 anything else even our forum there's probably some sort of option to
0:17 change the color scheme to match the black void in your soul but
0:21 is it really possible to dark mode every aspect of your digital
0:27 life and why would you want to
0:31 we're going to let you know right after i tell you about memory
0:34 express memory express's victoria bc location is now open and offers the same
0:39 product selection and quality of service as their other stores check out the link
0:42 below to learn more
0:52 a huge reason that people use dark mode is because they say that reading white
0:57 text on a dark background is easier on the eyes and this is especially true at
1:02 night when the ambient light is low
1:05 but that subjective analysis actually goes
1:09 against a lot of the conventional wisdom
1:12 for years monitor manufacturers have boasted of brighter and brighter
1:17 displays and according to both traditional ui design guidelines and
1:23 studies that rate the readability of various combinations of text and
1:27 background colors dark text on a white background is still
1:32 the number one most readable configuration and indeed as humans spend
1:37 more and more of their time staring at screens it has become apparent that the
1:42 conventional wisdom isn't always the best thing for our eyes scientists are
1:47 now studying new conditions like digital
1:50 eye strain and computer vision syndrome finding that large amounts of time spent
1:55 looking at screens can contribute to sleeplessness headaches dry eyes and
2:01 blurred vision and other studies have found that reading black text on a white
2:05 background can even contribute to increased myopia aka nearsightedness so
2:12 then on to ways to lessen the strain on your
2:15 eyes now one way is called night mode and this is usually a setting
2:21 on your monitor or on your device that attempts to filter out or reduce the
2:26 blue light that your screen is emitting making it less likely to disrupt your
2:30 circadian rhythm causing you to unintentionally spend the whole night
2:33 going down a wikipedia black hole but night mode is different from dark mode
2:40 dark mode is not a filter so much as it's a color scheme or a theme that can
2:45 be applied either to a specific application or in some cases even system
2:50 wide so what this means is that while it can improve comfort it doesn't
2:55 necessarily have the sleep benefits of night mode and in brightly lit
3:00 environments it can actually strain your eyes in exactly the same way that a
3:05 bright screen can in a dark room also
3:09 with dark mode the implementation depends heavily on the developer and not
3:14 all dark modes are made equal okay then so you're ready to take the
3:18 plunge and dark mode your life let's start with Windows 10. Windows has
3:24 actually had theme support for a very long time does anyone else remember
3:28 window blinds no oh bummer anyway now there's a handy
3:33 option right in the color settings to switch to the dark default app mode this
3:38 will make built-in Windows apps like settings calculator and alarms almost
3:42 fully black now it might also
3:46 automatically apply to photos movies and groove music but if it doesn't you can
3:50 go into those app settings and switch it on manually file explorer still doesn't
3:55 have dark mode support so you can expect sudden
3:58 retina searing light if you dare to browse c
4:02 but that is supposed to be coming in the october update so uh
4:08 microsoft does still have some work to do but if you don't like the built-in
4:12 dark mode they also have the option for you to customize Windows high contrast
4:16 settings to basically create your own
4:20 but even what i said just now assuming it all goes perfectly is only the built-in
4:25 microsoft apps i mean who spends their
4:28 whole day using those what about the one app that people probably use the most
4:33 their web browser well edge and firefox both have built-in
4:38 dark themes and while there is no official dark mode for chrome the
4:43 browser's theme and extension support mean that you can essentially kind of
4:46 tack one on so there's a category page for dark themes in the chrome web store
4:51 and popular ones include material incognito dark and morpheon dark with
4:56 the former being our pick but a theme just changes the toolbar websites are
5:01 still going to present themselves normally so some more tweaking is
5:05 required now a lot of websites have built in dark modes including twitter
5:10 youtube reddit the Linus tech tips forum and
5:14 gmail's inbox actually although
5:17 curiously for that last one daring to actually open an email will still blind
5:22 you as for the rest of the web you can install the dark reader extension which
5:26 is also available for firefox and safari on macOS it analyzes colors and tries
5:32 to make web pages look like an official dark mode with some settings available
5:36 for customization as well it solves gmail's dark mode problem but it can
5:41 also cause some glitchiness and delayed loading at times thankfully you can
5:46 actually teach it to enable or disable itself automatically site by site
5:51 now on to another popular app microsoft office there is an official
5:56 dark mode or dark theme found in the settings but
5:59 it sucks it doesn't affect the actual page color
6:03 you will have to go to design then page color for that and if you dare to make
6:08 comments add markups to a page or try to highlight anything you will quickly
6:12 discover some of its many flaws if you're a macOS user well you no doubt
6:17 already know about mojave's dark mode it's got a number of customization
6:21 options and it affects all of the os's built-in apps then for everything else
6:26 the handy website dark mode list has a directory of a ton of macOS apps that
6:31 support dark mode also if you install a third-party app like night owl or shifty
6:37 you can customize and even automate dark modes to turn on and off depending on
6:41 the time of day iOS is where things start to get really interesting though
6:45 so apple added a feature in the iOS accessibility settings called smart
6:50 invert colors which does exactly what it sounds like it inverts the colors in
6:54 every app but it also analyzes the screen to skip over
6:59 stuff like icons and images the result
7:03 is something that's actually pretty dang close to a true system-wide dark mode
7:08 although you might not like the way that it makes some apps look like google maps
7:14 fortunately apple thought of that and you can assign the mode to turn on or
7:18 off when you triple click the power button pretty awesome
7:21 what is not quite as awesome is Android's implementation of dark mode
7:26 now google finally added a dark mode option but it only affects quick
7:31 settings the app drawer and maybe the contacts and phone app
7:37 notifications and the full settings app remain light which is pretty irritating
7:42 you can change individual apps to dark mode phone messages youtube news maps
7:47 that is in navigation mode google play games authenticator gboard and the
7:51 google discover feed but your mileage may vary that is still not working on
7:55 riley's pixel now Android does have an invert colors option but it literally
8:01 just inverts the colors with no post processing to preserve images so it
8:05 really sucks there is the substratum engine an app that enables more robust
8:09 theming support but it requires that you root your device on all versions of
8:13 Android except oreo so obviously there are some trade-offs with dark mode not
8:18 the least of which being that from a ui design standpoint it is more difficult
8:23 to make it look good and there's still work to be done to the point where i
8:27 could see people just opting not to bother if it's going to be this much of
8:31 a hassle but aside from everything we've talked
8:34 about so far with respect to improved comfort there are some other benefits as
8:38 well so for example if you're on a mobile device you could actually realize
8:44 measurable battery savings at their Android dev summit google said
8:48 that using dark mode in the youtube app on an OLED screen could reduce your
8:53 battery usage by as much as 40 percent
8:56 though it should be noted that this was at maximum brightness oh yeah right i
9:00 guess riley didn't write an outro for this i guess that wasn't the
9:05 maximum brightest idea
9:11 oh yeah it's a good thing i have a writing staff
9:17 speaking of staff if you wield your staff in rpg games and
9:23 also stream them online you might want to pick up an elgato
9:26 stream deck it allows you to concentrate on your stream instead of trying to memorize
9:31 keyboard shortcuts one touch operations allow you to start your stream announce
9:35 your live play animations and more without ever taking your eyes off the
9:39 action with a total of six lcd keys that can be customized for any action and
9:45 have the graphics on them changed because they're all little screens it's
9:49 not just for streamers i mean taryn actually has two of the stream decks at
9:53 his desk because he loves his macros for adobe premiere and it's not hard to
9:57 remember which key does what because they're all little screens it's
10:01 available for mac or Windows it's less than 100 us dollars and you can check it
10:05 out now at amazon and newegg at the link below
