0:01 this has been hands down the worst work trip i've ever been on i lost my
0:05 luggage we lost all the footage from a previous trip so instead of going home i am
0:10 actually going to be going to ottawa after this and then we tried to stream our galaxy
0:15 note 9 coverage from here at unpack 2018 for 45 minutes before finally giving up
0:21 but at least there's a bright spot and the bright spot
0:26 is that the galaxy note 9 may very well be the sexiest phone we
0:32 have ever seen in fact not just may very well be look
0:35 if i pull out the black one i think you've got a perfect reflection
0:39 of brandon in there making this officially the sexiest phone
0:43 ever right right thumbs up for brandon sexy please
0:49 we're going to tell you all about it after this message from pia this video
0:52 is brought to you by private internet access private internet access is the
0:55 vpn that encrypts all your internet traffic and uses a safe protected ip to
0:59 learn more check it out now at the link in the video description
1:11 so i had a whole bunch of plans you know
1:14 best laid plans of mice and men we were gonna do the whole thing live i had this
1:17 i had this whole joke where i was gonna do like our whole our old intro and i
1:21 was gonna i was gonna hold it up for for the camera oh look look it's the Linus
1:25 tech tips intro lol you know what we're going to do it anyway
1:29 brought to you by no not ncix ignore the man behind the curtain ncix has nothing
1:32 to do with Linus tech tips anymore okay
1:36 so the whole keynote started with a lot of very bold claims in grand dewey's
1:41 messaging seek a life fulfilled with purpose and
1:46 motivated to do more and the kinds of people who they imagine a no customer
1:50 would be but of course all that does is set very high
1:54 expectations for someone like me of this device and they've actually managed to
1:59 do an incredible job of living up to most of it so specs run down it's got a
2:04 6.4 inch display and the first thing i noticed about it once i got my hands on
2:08 it was that it's actually got a slightly
2:12 by the look of things slightly wider bezel
2:16 than the previous s9 plus and i actually
2:19 am fully supportive of this change because i do find that every so
2:24 occasionally i'll have difficulty pressing something especially when i'm
2:28 reaching across the screen and i end up interfering with my button presses when
2:32 i'm trying to type it's got a 10 nanometer octa-core
2:36 processor this was actually very telling one of the most interesting moments of
2:40 the keynote for me was at the very end when their uh smartphone division head i
2:45 forget what his actual exact title is it's something along the lines of
2:49 every year we work to make the note the most
2:52 powerful most amazing smartphone ever it's not easy every year frankly
2:56 speaking and then he kind of laughed and it
3:00 unlike the entire rest of the presentation really sounded genuine and
3:04 he goes it's not easy
3:08 and it really is a great point because you can't just keep stuffing better and
3:11 better specs into a phone every time so it's got an octa-core processor which
3:16 depending on which region you're in might actually mean something different
3:19 so i've got my review device here which i have already started to load apps on
3:24 and of course the first thing was CPU zed so it's going to be some combination
3:28 of dual sourced snapdragon 845 processors and some variant of exynos
3:33 probably the same thing from the s9 and the s9 plus you can see that the
3:37 snapdragon is the one that turbo's up to 2.8 and i think the other one maxes out
3:42 at 2.7 so they're even listing separate frequencies for the different products
3:46 depending on which capacity you get i believe these are all 128 gig versions
3:51 you'll get either six or eight gigs of RAM they're all ip68 water and dust
3:56 resistant i refuse to call it waterproof they've all got fast wireless charging 4
4:01 000 milliamp hour batteries this is another huge change i was not that
4:06 impressed with the note 8 and one of the things that i complained about was that
4:10 i felt like samsung was being really conservative with the battery capacity
4:14 of it on the heels of the note 7 fire
4:17 fiasco gone is that strategy so they've brought
4:21 their multi-point battery inspection process to a higher capacity 4 000
4:25 milliamp hour that is a great they're messaging it as
4:29 an all-day battery and i actually believe it
4:33 physically there's not going to be a lot of surprises here i actually really love
4:36 the color choices this year so they've got this they're calling it copper to me
4:40 it's more of like a bronzy type color really like this one they've got purple
4:44 making a return they're calling it lilac or something along those lines i like
4:47 the s9 plus purple a little bit better but this one's pretty smexy too they've
4:51 got a blue and then of course they've got a more traditional black and most of
4:55 them have matching s pen colors but the blue one gets this really bold yellow
5:00 color one of the things that stood out to me about all of the color choices
5:03 this year is that samsung really has their own identity for colors now they
5:07 have not piggybacked on anything that apple's doing there's no gold there's no
5:11 red everything here is uniquely samsung one of the other big physical changes is
5:16 the movement of the fingerprint sensor so we've got tons of different options
5:19 for biometric security once again fingerprint sensor at the back facial
5:23 reader in the forward-facing camera as well as their iris scanner and these two
5:28 you can put together for what they're calling intelligent scan they spent a
5:31 lot more time talking about their vast ecosystem of other products including
5:35 mentioning things like refrigerators as they work towards sort of building a
5:39 more connected world one of the more connected things that i saw demoed on
5:43 stage was decks so dex has gone from being this sort of uh weird feature that
5:48 doesn't make a ton of sense to me because you have to buy this extra accessory to something that looks very
5:54 seamless so now all you need is a usb type-c to HDMI adapter and boom you plug
6:01 that into a display and presumably you can connect a keyboard and mouse via
6:05 bluetooth though they didn't demo that they demoed using the note 9 as a
6:09 touchpad that's it that's all it takes to get a
6:12 desktop experience now Android still isn't a great desktop or laptop
6:17 experience this was particularly clear when razer was showing off their concept
6:21 for a phone that kind of slotted into a laptop shell
6:26 but with some work and it does seem like we're going the right direction that
6:29 could be a great way to take your work with you on the go
6:33 of course one of the big things they were talking about ooh yes yes this is
6:36 exciting was how much work you can take with you on
6:40 the go or how much stuff so with the 512
6:43 gig version which is going to be 1249 us and then
6:46 it's uh 9.99 oops that's the wrong thing 9.99 u.s for the 128 gig version
6:54 they are saying that you can have up to a hundred
6:57 whoa there it goes you can have up to one terabyte of capacity in a phone well
7:03 i say why wait because samsung was saying well you know you got to wait for
7:06 samsung's 512 gig micro sd not me
7:10 i have the integral 128 gig micro sd so we're going to do it
7:16 first just for lols
7:20 i actually don't even know if this is a 512 gig phone
7:23 oh look at that it's got a sim in it yes
7:27 you saw it here first my friends that is assuming that i can get this in
7:32 here
7:35 512 gigs of microsd going into a note 9.
7:41 i gotta remember to take that with me that thing's like four hundred dollars
7:45 tab here to transfer media files boom just like that it comes up
7:49 absolutely gorgeous get more space yeah right as if i need it last thing i
7:53 really want to spend some time on is the s pen the s pen is something that i've
7:56 always looked at as a really cool feature that i'm not likely to use but
8:00 that all changes this time so somehow without changing the form factor at
8:05 least to my eye i don't have a note 8 on me today they have managed to cram
8:10 wireless charging bluetooth and a battery into this thing so now you can
8:14 use it as remote capture for taking selfies you can use it to advance a
8:19 powerpoint presentation and they are even opening up the sdk i think very
8:24 soon they didn't actually give a timeline on it but they're going to make the sdk available to everyone so it'll
8:29 be up to app developers how they want to use this and i'm assuming it was by
8:33 clicking and double clicking but they were even able to go forward and backward within powerpoint that is
8:39 absolutely fantastic it charges in a minute lasts for 90 minutes and still
8:44 has all the regular s pen functionality that you would expect passively without
8:48 the battery on board being charged so this is a potential game changer for
8:53 someone who is a reluctant s penner like me
8:56 the speakers are stereo now so that's fantastic and they are akg but
9:01 it always becomes a little bit less meaningful when someone like samsung
9:04 says yeah they're akj speakers but then they ran out and they acquired harman
9:08 which is the parent company of akg last year so it probably wasn't that hard to
9:12 get the certification and i think that's pretty much it they
9:16 didn't say much about performance specifically other than that it's got a water carbon cooling system which is
9:21 probably fancy branding for a heat pipe
9:24 and oh yeah right they announced the galaxy
9:28 watch which i wasn't going to review but now i feel
9:31 like i really need to get my hands on this thing is absolutely gorgeous it's
9:34 got lte connectivity just like apple's latest generation watch they say it
9:38 lasts for three days on battery which is a huge boon for someone like me who's
9:42 been whining about watches not having a
9:46 either always on displays or b good batteries since they pretty much
9:50 showed up on the market so let me know in the comments below if you'd like to
9:53 see a dedicated video on that also they did a bixby smart speaker which
9:59 sure let me know if you want to see that too so thanks for putting up with our
10:03 very late coverage here guys we really wanted to bring this to you live but we
10:07 tried and tried and tried and i'm only human and i'm sorry
10:11 but what i'm not sorry about is private internet access pia is the
10:16 vpn service that hides your true ip and allows you to bypass pesky geo
10:20 restrictions and censorship by making you appear as though you are connecting
10:23 from somewhere else and we actually got a video coming on this in the near
10:26 future you can use a vpn for all kinds of things that you might not think of
10:31 they're not just for people who are trying to like conceal their identities
10:34 online you can watch video streams from another country like if you want access
10:38 to bbc and you are not living in great britain and you can even get cheaper
10:43 tickets for flights if you are pretty savvy we're gonna have a video coming
10:47 about that soon so go check out pia today they have over a thousand servers
10:51 in 28 countries and we'll have them linked in the video
10:54 description so thanks for watching guys like dislike
