0:00 so valve has released the steam Hardware survey upon the world they've given a
0:04 way for us Hardware enthusiasts to weigh and measure ourselves to see if we are
0:09 actually worthy of VR and it's left some
0:12 of us kind of wanting how it runs this
0:15 test is it does the portal VR demo where it just expands a little machine and you
0:20 have to try to look at it and whatnot but just has a static camera that moves
0:23 around when it's done it will serve you your results whether or not you are
0:27 ready capable or not
0:39 ready tunnel bear is the easy to use VPN service that lets you use the web as if
0:43 you're in 20 different countries learn more and try tunnel bear for free at the
0:47 link in the video description so yeah it's spoiler alert
0:53 not that good looking only 99.4% of
0:56 people have actually made it through if you look down below that it
1:00 will tell you the results the results will tell you how to upgrade your system
1:04 in order to become ready if you expand lower than that it will tell you how
1:08 many frames were encoded how many frames were above 90 FPS which is extremely
1:12 important considering VR screens are usually 90 HZ plus we'll tell you how
1:16 many frames were dropped by your CPU and the average Fidelity of the scene or the
1:21 graphical quality that it was able to accomplish while running through the
1:25 entire scene so yeah 99.4% of people
1:30 slightly lower than that already based on the steam Hardware survey so get
1:35 wrecked I guess we've been saying this for a long time online of te tips the
1:39 hardware Community is not actually up there enough for VR people complain
1:44 about the cost of headsets but their computers aren't even ready but let's
1:49 take a sec and actually analyze where those numbers came from the steam
1:52 Hardware survey is it up to
1:55 Snuff the steam Hardware survey is a
1:59 simple but very powerful tool you submit
2:02 your data to valve they total it put percentages of how many people are
2:05 running what on it and make it publicly available great tons of people use it we
2:09 at lineus Media Group use it we use it to quantify how many people are going
2:13 for what card what chip what brand whatever and then discuss that in videos
2:18 or the W show from time to time it's a pretty interesting concept and I we will
2:22 continue to do that in the future another group of people that uses it
2:25 game devs they use it to Target what Hardware they need to prepare game for
2:30 is it a very high-end very high fidelity
2:33 game well they probably need to Target whatever the highest percentage of
2:37 high-end cards are that kind of makes sense it's a relatively simple concept
2:41 but does it make sense for VR does the hardware survey actually apply properly
2:45 to VR I would argue no because there's too much garbage data what is garbage
2:51 data well I for one fall in this category I have probably about seven
2:55 computers in the steam Hardware survey but probably one of them
3:00 actually exactly one of them is only intended for VR none of the other ones
3:04 will ever probably do anything in the VR space they're there to play stuff like
3:09 papers pleas or Minecraft or counter- striker Team Fortress and those rigs
3:13 should not be in a percentage system in order to figure out the amount of
3:18 computers ready for VR I understand that's not what the steam Hardware survey is but that's where the 9.4% came
3:23 from and people have been saying for a long time including me that the
3:26 community isn't ready
3:30 to get an accurate representation of the gaming community's Readiness for VR you
3:35 need a lot of data to get a lot of this data you need a lot of people and you
3:39 need a lot of Hardware I'm only one man so I don't fix that category but I do
3:43 have a bunch of Hardware there's a problem there as well though I have a
3:47 bunch of bleeding edge current generation Hardware I don't have the
3:51 interesting bits like the I5 2500 in the
3:54 GTX 680 which sold a bunch and might
3:57 actually still be able to skim buy into that ready category that's interesting I
4:01 want to figure out what is just going to be able to make it here we specialize on
4:05 things like $30,000 computers and computers that fit into bombs they're
4:11 fun but they don't really matter a ton
4:14 in this data set I don't need to reaffirm that really expensive really
4:18 overbuilt modern current generation gaming Hardware is able to run VR we get
4:24 that it's the more interesting data that I'm looking
4:27 for this is where you come in we need the community to come together and make
4:33 a massively collaborative benchmarking project so we can see where the
4:36 Enthusiast Community is sitting in terms of VR performance we can do this on the
4:41 Forum the line of SE tips Community Forum jumper 118 has already done
4:45 something similar with cinebench he has an awesome thread with over 500
4:48 submissions of people cinebench scores that's super cool I've used those
4:52 results in videos in the past before and I'm not looking to sell this data before
4:57 anyone of the comments freaks out this is all publicly available stuff we're
5:00 not selling it I just want to host online at se.com forum CU it's easy so
5:05 yeah please submit your test results there we can see how our community is
5:08 ready for VR because I'm pretty sure it's higher than 99.4% so don't worry if
5:13 you have a low-end rig if you're running multiple cards whatever it happens to be
5:17 if you're remotely interested in VR or high-end gaming at all submit your rig
