0:07 welcome to an exciting unboxing this is the Samsung 830 series now I've been
0:12 asked a lot of times to talk about the 830 series but the cold hard truth was I
0:17 didn't have one now I do now I can talk about it because the sound okay here
0:24 let's start with some context here guys Samsung is the world's number one SSD
0:30 everything they are doing so many OEM
0:33 drives they okay when you're Samsung you
0:37 actually build every component of the
0:40 SSD nobody else does that even Intel I
0:44 mean they Fab flash so they do they do flash
0:48 um they don't do their own controller anymore okay so let's find let's find
0:53 other guys um Micron doesn't use their
0:57 own controller they use their own flash but not their own controller I mean you
1:00 look at guys like ocz where they're designing firmwares and they are working
1:05 on controller designs and all that but they don't actually build it and they
1:09 don't actually Fab flash they just get huge volume discounts due to their
1:13 hugeness so Samsung is the only one that
1:16 actually builds the entire thing from the ground up in every possible way what
1:22 advantages does that give them well number one it gives them a cost
1:25 Advantage so they can deliver high performance products at very competitive
1:29 costs what other advantages does it give them it gives them full control of the
1:33 creative process of creating the drive so if there's anything that goes well
1:37 with the drive Samsung knows who to give the credit to if there's anything that
1:41 goes wrong with the drive there's no one for Samsung to blame that gives them a
1:45 vested interest in making sure that everything they do is really good
1:50 because they're like yeah there you go there's no ambiguity about who screwed
1:55 it up if something goes wrong this is the desktop upgrade version of their
1:59 drive so it comes in a full retail box and includes a whole bunch of really
2:02 cool stuff so you got a MOX TOA power adapter a SATA cable all the mounting
2:07 screws you could possibly need whether you're installing it in uh actually well
2:11 notebooks will come with all the mounting screws you need so these will Mount the SSD to this and then they will
2:16 Mount this to your computer comes with a
2:19 copy of Norton Ghost cool so this will allow you to quickly and easily upgrade
2:23 your existing drive to your SSD comes with their interactive manual
2:29 magician software and SSD manual comes with a hard copy of their quick user
2:33 manual unpack look at this unpacking it has a guide for what I'm doing I can
2:37 follow the instructions of how to do an unboxing atem page four
2:43 unpacking check your product box for the following items please refer to the back
2:47 of the package to see the installation kit you have purchased the illustrations
2:51 May differ from your actual items that's pretty much what I do isn't
2:55 it all right it also includes nice
2:59 solidly built built desktop adapter so you mount your SSD here you mount your
3:02 thing to your case and then even if your case doesn't natively support 2 and 1 12
3:06 in drives you'll have no problem installing it so this is an 830 Drive
3:10 the 830 Drive is pretty much as good as it gets out there in terms of
3:14 performance it has a threeyear warranty and it does not have the same
3:18 disadvantage that a sandforce controller has where it performs really well with
3:22 compressible data it's doing data compression on the Fly and uncompression
3:25 on the fly when it's writing and reading what that means is in order to achieve
3:29 the speeds they've gone for they need a faster well not a faster controller they
3:32 need faster Flash and they need to very very carefully build it and tune it in
3:37 order to ensure that sandforce doesn't absolutely blow it away when it comes to
3:41 compressible data so a Samsung Drive will perform the same regardless of what
3:45 you're doing on it compared to a sandforce drive will perform
3:48 significantly better in certain applications and significantly worse in
3:53 others uh one of the other oh yeah this is one of the other things one of the
3:56 other things that Samsung has an advantage of with when they're building
4:00 their own stuff is that they get to keep all the best for themselves flash is all
4:05 about binning so if you guys don't understand the binning process we actually have an ncx Tech tips episode
4:09 that's all about binning what it means but what in a nutshell it means that
4:14 they produce a bunch of Flash and cherry pick everything they want and then
4:17 anything they don't want well that can go to someone else to build USB thumb
4:21 drives what do they care they took the best stuff they used it in their own
4:24 products to make sure that their customers get the absolute cream of the
4:28 crop that gives you better reliability it gives you better speeds and it gives
4:32 you well in terms of for Samsung it gives them lower RMA rates and better
4:36 brand perception so it's good for absolutely everybody um so there's your
4:40 Samsung logo there's your brush Metal finish there's your capacity indication
4:44 on the side you find your standard mounting holes on the other side you
4:47 find your other more different standard mounting holes and then on the bottom you find your completely more different
4:51 than those standard mounting holes depending on what kind of a notebook you
4:55 have this is also a slim SSD which is great because it means that you can
4:58 install it anywhere um some notebook computers only have
5:03 room for slim ssds so there's a there's about that much more on some ssds makes
5:08 them a little bit thicker so whoops I almost dropped it but I didn't but it
5:12 wouldn't have mattered because Flash is very durable and is can can handle that
5:16 on the back we find our SATA power connector as well as our SATA 3 6 gbit
5:19 per second interface and I think that pretty much covers it for now don't
5:23 forget subscribe to L Tech tips from unboxings reviews and other computer videos and thank you for watching my
5:27 video about the Samsung 830 series series 512 gig SSD
