0:07 welcome to my unboxing of something that is Bucking the trend this is the WD
0:13 Velociraptor one tbte so you guys
0:17 remember the Raptor okay so the Raptor
0:20 first arrived on the scene in a capacity that honestly was unusable the 36 GB
0:27 it's like I mean that's that's like when ssds for showed up and you're kind of
0:30 looking at it going well okay so I could put my OS on it in like one game mind
0:35 you at the time you could put more games than one game cuz games were smaller but
0:38 now that games are like 17 gigs or more for certain games I mean my Dragon Age
0:42 Origins game is like 30 gigs or something like that so okay so okay
0:48 we've determined that the Raptor while it was fast and cool and relevant at the
0:51 time is now too small too slow and hasn't existed for a very long time now
0:55 the Velociraptor came along and rejuvenated the Raptor line the
0:59 Velociraptor was available in higher capacities it was faster and more
1:02 efficient and even then at the time it
1:06 was still not that relevant because ssds were getting higher in capacity they
1:10 were getting lower in price and they were so much faster that you're kind of
1:13 looking at it going well like oh that doesn't really make that much sense this looks like a game changer
1:19 this is the Velociraptor 1 tbte so we're a long way away from highperformance
1:24 ssds that are 1 tbte and come in at a reasonable price the Velociraptor 1 tbte
1:29 comes in at a very reasonable price remember magnetic storage is still many
1:34 times cheaper per Gigabyte compared to Solid State Storage what's the
1:37 application of this is it for a boot Drive personally I would say no I would
1:41 say still this has a very valid place in a high performance system whether it's a
1:46 workstation or even a gaming rig where you're using an SSD as your boot drive
1:50 and you're using a velociraptor one tbte or even you know a raid of multiple
1:54 Velociraptor 1 tabt in the context of
1:58 needing high performance storage that also needs a lot of capacity so if
2:03 you're using it as a scratch Drive working on very very large files if
2:07 you're using it to store your steam Library so maybe you've got Windows
2:10 installed on your SSD a couple key applications but you've got a huge steam
2:14 library of games that is always expanding well you can't keep that on an
2:18 SSD and honestly your storage system doesn't make that much of a difference
2:22 except maybe with game loading times when you're popping into the game in
2:25 terms of actually launching games and playing single player especially it
2:28 doesn't make that much of a difference although it's nice to have the little
2:31 boost um especially well like I said when you're loading games um
2:36 particularly for multiplayer so yeah
2:39 okay useful for gamers but most of the focus is on professionals professionals
2:43 need the capacity professionals need the speed but don't necessarily want to
2:48 compromise too much in either direction so that's where the Velociraptor 1 tab
2:53 comes in we're actually going to be doing full coverage of this on ncx Tech
2:57 tips so don't forget to subscribe to my ncixcom channel but I just wanted to
3:00 take a couple minutes open her up show you guys what a velociraptor one
3:05 terabyte looks like this is a 2 and a half inch thick drive so you can't just
3:08 take it off the included adapter and throw it in a notebook it most likely
3:12 won't fit it comes with a heat sink cuz this is a 10,000 RPM drive so that's
3:18 where it gets the additional performance it also gets additional performance from
3:21 its form factor the fact that it is a 2 1/2 in Drive compared to a 3 and 1/2 in
3:26 Drive means that the platters are much smaller smaller platters means that your
3:31 access times are much lower as well because the head physically doesn't have
3:35 to move as far in order to access the data that you need the faster spinning
3:40 platter also gives it additional sequential performance on both reads and
3:44 rights which is again another advantage of magnetic storage over Solid State
3:49 Storage if you're doing something very right intensive a velociraptor is
3:52 probably a better solution than an SSD just due to the fact that ssds do
3:56 eventually die I recently had an SSD die in my Windows home server actually uh
4:01 which is a very right intensive application I was using it as my boot
4:04 drive and it also throws it into the drive pool so for an application where
4:08 it's going to get beat up like crazy uh magnetic may still be the way to go so
4:13 there you go uh thank you for checking out oh right okay I should finished
4:16 showing you guys the heat sink so it's got like this beastly heat sink on it which looks amazing it's awesome cool
4:21 there you go uh it's also got an adapter right here so you're taking the smaller
4:25 SATA interface and you're kind of moving it a little to the left it's actually a
4:29 full siiz ATA interface you're moving it over here where you can easily plug it
4:32 into a 3 and 1/2 in Bay in your system okay and right so why the heat snc
4:37 because 10,000 RPM drives will run hotter unless you're cooling them so
4:41 this takes care of that don't forget to subscribe to line This Tech tips for more unboxings reviews and other
