0:00 when apple revealed the iphone 7 back in 2016 the company was widely ridiculed
0:05 for describing its decision to omit the formerly universal headphone jack as
0:11 courageous a term that is usually reserved for people like war veterans
0:15 and cancer survivors but marketing bombast aside apple started a trend as
0:20 they so typically do and these days many other smartphone manufacturers are
0:25 ditching the headphone jack is there actually a good reason for this now the
0:29 cynics quickly crafted their own theories apple was trying to be different just
0:34 because or maybe they were trying to push their conveniently just released
0:40 not to mention expensive wireless airpods which is obviously going to be
0:44 easier if the alternative is a clunky looking dongle or maybe they just wanted
0:48 more of that sweet sweet lightning connector royalty money for the
0:52 third-party headphones that would inevitably show up down the line
0:56 featuring that connector but none of these explained the industry trend that
1:01 was about to take place i mean did the others follow suit just because they
1:05 wanted to be cool like apple well hold on a minute now maybe there were some
1:10 shenanigans going on here but the official explanation that apple gave
1:15 once you get past the nonsense about courage actually made quite a bit of
1:18 sense smartphones are really miniature
1:22 computers and the companies that manufacture them are tasked with taking
1:26 the basic functions of a machine that has traditionally occupied a large chunk
1:30 of your desk or at best your backpack and fit them into something that can
1:34 comfortably rest in your pocket and they also provided the admittedly
1:39 very reasonable rationale that fewer points of ingress made it easier for
1:44 their latest device to officially be water resistant
1:48 i mean here's the thing we kind of take it for granted because smartphones even
1:52 waterproof ones are everywhere but all of that stuff is not trivial to
1:58 do and it requires very efficient use of just about every bit of available space
2:03 inside the device so it shouldn't have surprised anyone that manufacturers
2:08 including apple had been increasingly viewing the headphone jack as a space
2:13 hog that just doesn't justify how much real estate it takes up
2:17 and this is especially true when you consider that some people already didn't
2:22 use it and they've got so many extra
2:25 features that they're trying to cram into these phones to make them stand out
2:29 from the competition from 3d face recognition sensors to triple camera
2:34 setups to more spacious batteries and this is all in the name of
2:38 differentiating their phone from their competitors in a world where truly tiny
2:44 differences between models can make or break sales
2:48 and according to the folks calling the shots for these manufacturers trends
2:53 like displays that take up as much of the front of the phone as possible and
2:57 thin sleek chassis are driven directly by consumer demand this has led to not
3:03 just headphone jacks but also bezels and even physical buttons ending up going
3:08 the way of the television channel dial
3:11 now we aren't going to defend every reason
3:14 some companies claimed that they were ditching the headphone jack because it
3:17 delivers poor audio quality compared to wireless solutions or headphones that
3:22 connect digitally via usbc or a lightning port but while an analog
3:27 connection can be affected by electrical interference from other components
3:31 inside a phone many users were perfectly happy with the sound quality they were
3:35 getting and the convenience factor of
3:38 something that's compatible with all your old stuff is pretty high but
3:44 regardless of the intentions of the company that made your smartphone the
3:48 disappearance of the headphone jack looks like it's a trend that's going to
3:51 be very hard or maybe even impossible to
3:54 reverse even though many users have lamented that bluetooth usbc and
4:00 lightning headphones often don't provide good enough sound quality
4:04 or a good enough user experience to justify their price tags throw in then
4:08 the fact that you often have to buy a separate adapter just to listen to your
4:13 headphones and charge your phone at the same time and taking out the headphone jack
4:17 remains a controversial decision more than two years after we were all first
4:22 introduced to the idea well
4:25 i for one accept it i think it's going to be okay as long as this doesn't
4:29 become a trend in the tablet space that wait what
