0:00 the hotly anticipated ASUS rog swift
0:03 pg279q is it a worthy successor to the pg278q
0:08 the monitor that i declared to be the best gaming monitor yet
0:13 let's find out
0:24 the master case 5 by cooler master gives you the freedom to truly make your mid
0:27 tower pc case your own with a variety of modular parts and accessories check out
0:31 the link in the video description to learn more
0:35 so for those of you who have got other to do i'm going to cut to the chase a
0:39 little bit here the swift pg279q is even better than its
0:43 predecessor in almost every conceivable way with the only trade-off being
0:48 marginally slower pixel response times due to its use of an ips or specifically
0:53 ahva but i'll use the broader term for the rest of this video panel instead of
0:57 the tn panel in the 278 model so if you
1:00 want the best of the best 16x9 1440p
1:04 display look no further but for the folks who
1:08 think that tldr just isn't enough to go on to make an informed buying decision
1:12 and the ones that watch our videos to drool over the tech porn as much as
1:16 anything else let's get into what makes the swift pg279q special and where it
1:21 falls in the rest of the competitive landscape first the physical tour if
1:25 you've seen the previous rog swift you've pretty much seen this one sex
1:29 horrifically slim bezels with even the logo adorned chin bar being skinnier
1:33 than the side and top bezels of the monitors of days past a sturdy and
1:37 flexible stand design that allows tilt swivel pivot and height adjust an
1:42 intuitive menu system with a handful of quick access buttons and a joystick for
1:46 the meat and potatoes of the osd options seriously i cannot emphasize enough how
1:51 much of a relief this was coming from the abominable on-screen controls of the
1:55 acer predator x34 and an aesthetic that
1:58 with the optional red ring and rog logo
2:02 lighting effects enabled looks sufficiently gamery without being a
2:06 complete eyesore if your gaming rig happens to also be in the middle of your
2:10 living room so yeah they didn't change much about the exterior but why would
2:15 they i already loved everything about the predecessor from the outside with my
2:19 one complaint being the while very good considering it's a tn
2:23 panel the tn panel that just couldn't deliver the color performance and
2:28 viewing angles of an ips display and that's where the pg-279's upgraded guts
2:34 start to come in the 27 inch 1440p panel
2:37 has been changed out to ips and on top
2:40 of that the 144 hertz maximum refresh
2:43 rate that made the original swift such an amazing gaming display assuming you
2:47 had the kind of hardware horses to push that kind of frame rate in your games
2:51 has been upgraded and through a setting in the on-screen menu can be pushed even
2:56 further so with NVIDIA's g-sync variable refresh rate technology you can run your
3:00 display at anywhere from 30 to 165
3:04 hertz depending on the frame rate that your game is being output at and that's
3:08 not the only thing that comes with the newer g-sync implementation now to
3:13 accompany the displayport 1.2 port there's a secondary HDMI 1.4 port if you
3:18 have a game console or a laptop or some other device that you want to be able to
3:23 switch to on the fly because even though
3:26 these other devices might not be capable of outputting games at higher than 1080p
3:30 60hz there are benefits to using a high
3:34 performance display backlight bleed was a non-issue on my sample the measured
3:39 total display leg with my leo bodner tester was 12.5 milliseconds on the 60hz
3:44 HDMI input a very fine result the motion
3:47 blur or ghosting in the normal default
3:50 overdrive setting was the best i've ever seen on an ips display with moving
3:55 images especially at the high refresh rates like 144 and 165 hertz almost
4:01 being eerily clear and thanks to the ips
4:04 panel color reproduction was nothing short of awesome with a stellar contrast
4:09 ratio and color accuracy across the board coming in below a delta e of five
4:14 with both gamma and white point being within acceptable margins right out of
4:18 the box with no adjustments made other than to overclock the panel to 165 hertz
4:23 before running my tests flipping awesome but something to
4:27 consider is that getting the panel overclocked to that level isn't a guarantee
4:33 first of all you will need to abandon all hope of running ultra low motion
4:37 blur backlight strobing since that only operates at 120 hertz or lower with
4:42 g-sync disabled second you'll need a gtx 960 or newer
4:48 maxwell architecture card from NVIDIA with owners of older NVIDIA and AMD
4:52 graphics cards for the most part limited to 144 hertz and finally while i can't
4:58 comment on whether this will be an issue for this monitor because i only have one
5:02 of them mine worked fine and they don't seem to be available to the public at
5:06 the time of recording this video it was pointed out to me that some users are
5:10 not getting the full advertised 100hz overclock on their acer x34 predator
5:16 displays so there might be some variability there which i guess raises
5:20 the question does it actually matter anyway from my experience no not really
5:25 i mean overclocking the x34 predator from 60 to 100 hertz takes it from just
5:31 an ultra wide with g-sync to the kind of thing that dreams are made of
5:35 overclocking the pg279q takes it from wicked amazing fast to wicked amazing
5:41 slightly faster if you're playing easy to drive games
5:45 like team fortress 2 or cs go at 165 freaking FPS or if you have some kind of
5:50 like liquid nitrogen cooled space age machine that can run newer aaa games at
5:54 that kind of a frame rate while maintaining decent settings because that
5:58 is kind of the point of a g-sync display right smoother animations even when the
6:03 frame rate dips a little bit allowing you to turn up eye candy like lara
6:07 croft's pair for a better gaming experience
6:11 so the last thing then to talk about is price it's not cheap but honestly i
6:16 think ASUS pretty much nailed the positioning of this product it's about a
6:20 hundred and fifty dollars more than its tn film predecessor but you get an ips
6:25 panel slightly faster refresh rate and an HDMI input it also costs about a
6:31 hundred dollars more than the ips panel equipped acer xb270hu
6:36 that we reviewed back here but offers a faster refresh rate and an HDMI input
6:41 and also to my tastes a superior aesthetic design
6:45 so simply put then it's expensive but for competitive gamers who don't
6:50 care about ultrawide note that i am not one of them and i prefer the predator x
6:54 34's curvy sexiness if not its price
6:58 it's the best gaming monitor ever this
7:01 is the kind of gear especially if you're coming from run-of-the-mill 60 hertz
7:05 equipment that actually makes it easier
7:08 to track opponents and nail head shots well done ASUS you've upped the ante
