0:07 how when you use a keyboard for a long time the letters wear off or you get a
0:11 layer of finger dirt so deep you have to physically scrape your keys well if this
0:18 has ever happened to you and you don't have to admit it I'm sure that what
0:22 you've noticed is that it mostly affects the keys that you're pressing down all
0:25 the time like Eeyore enter so I'd be
0:29 willing to bet that for most of you one key that's remained more or less
0:33 pristine is scroll lock
0:37 but what the heck is scroll lock anyway
0:40 is it something people use to keep their documents secure before books were
0:44 invented sorry for that anyway we don't need to
0:49 go quite that far back for our answer but the scroll lock does hail from a
0:53 bygone era of computing these days if
0:57 you were working on a document for example you would generally reposition
1:02 the typing cursor by moving your mouse and roll the wheel to scroll up and down
1:07 the page but back before graphical
1:11 operating systems and mice were widespread people used the arrow keys on
1:16 their keyboards to move their cursors around or to scroll the page so the
1:21 scroll locks purpose was to toggle their arrow keys between scrolling when it was
1:27 on and just moving the cursor around when it was off so then is scroll lock
1:34 still relevant in the era of mice and fancy gooeys while many people and
1:40 keyboard manufacturers are clearly saying no it's not uncommon to find
1:45 keyboards without the scroll lock key but that doesn't mean that it's totally
1:51 useless some modern programs notably
1:54 Microsoft Excel still use the scroll
1:58 lock key as it was originally intended turn it off and the arrow keys will
2:03 highlight an adjacent cell but turn it on and they will scroll through the
2:07 entire worksheet which can actually be handy if you're working on a laptop and
2:12 your trackpad is terrible there's also a little-known Windows feature that makes
2:17 use of scroll lock if you modify the registry with this key then hold right
2:22 control and press scroll lock twice you'll get the blue screen of death cool
2:27 right now I'm serious this feature is included to give advanced users the
2:32 ability to look at the contents of the system's memory which are dumped to a
2:36 log file when a blue screen crash occurs finally if you've got several computers
2:42 hooked up to a KVM like in the server room here at Linus Media Group pressing
2:47 scroll lock twice then a number key will actually switch the input on most of
2:52 these types of devices however as you've
2:55 probably noticed all of these use cases
2:59 are fringe at best so these days the
3:03 most common use of the scroll lock is simply as a free key that can be
3:08 remapped for any number of other purposes some people use it to trigger a
3:12 macro or some other special function during gameplay while others use special
3:17 hotkey software that can repurpose scroll lock as a toggle between two
3:22 different virtual keyboards so if you were looking for a way to finally
3:27 achieve your life's goal of having a dedicated wingdings keyboard without
3:31 missing out on desk space for your regular one this could be the answer or
3:36 maybe an alternate Cyrillic or Mandarin
3:39 layout would make more sense there's a ton of different reasons you might want
3:43 multiple computers maybe use one as a as a coding workstation and the other one
3:47 for gaming for example but no one likes having two keyboards and two mice on the
3:52 desk it's confusing and it's cluttered well synergy solves that problem at once
3:56 and for all letting you use a single keyboard and mouse across multiple
4:01 computers even if they have different operating systems all together it works
4:06 on Windows Mac and Linux and has great
4:10 features including clipboard sharing dragging and dropping files between the
4:14 computers custom hotkeys and more
4:17 synergy is available in basic and pro versions with the latter including s
4:22 cell encryption to secure the data sent between the computers and synergy is
