0:04 oh i left my thing okay i'm live
0:10 welcome friends to something a little bit different it actually is kind of
0:13 surprising to me that it's taken this long for me to do this i will be doing
0:18 yes with my flippy knife and my flippy screwdriver i will be
0:23 doing a live pc build this is actually the machine that i worked with the
0:28 winner of lg's ultrawide festival hence the sweater that i actually just put on
0:31 randomly this morning and worked out as a happy accident that i'm wearing so
0:35 i'll be putting together the machine that i worked with the winner of ultrawide festival to
0:39 well pick out all the parts for and then well put together in theory he was
0:43 supposed to put it together himself but i picked out a bunch of stuff that
0:46 frankly i wasn't really 100 sure would even work so i was like you know what
0:51 bro why don't you have it sent to me i'll put it together for you and i'll
0:55 stream it which is pretty cool i think so check this out i have two cameras i
0:59 have two camera angles i have that i have the top down camera angle got my
1:02 like stab and screwdriver and then i got the uh more in the front
1:06 more traditional camera angle so without further ado
1:11 i guess we'll pretty much get started actually now one thing i'm going to do is i'm going to grab my laptop
1:15 so i can talk to you lovely twitch chat people today
1:19 most of you are lovely i've already seen star wars by the way our our bot is set
1:23 up to ban people for star wars spoilers so i really wouldn't tempt the gods
1:27 on on that one right there ah one two three four so i get to
1:32 interact with twitch chat the wretched hive of scum and villainy
1:36 that it is wow we have 1400 people watching me have
1:39 audio difficulties i guess that shouldn't really surprise me because it's the same as every week
1:47 all right so why don't we start with the usual thing where i walk through all the
1:50 different parts that i picked out and sort of why so for the case we went with
1:54 a fractal design define r5 we were gonna go with some totally like wonko tastic
2:00 in win thing for like nine hundred dollars because we were like yeah whatever we got a ten thousand dollar
2:04 budget uh instead we ended up rebalancing that
2:08 so he could afford like a more reasonable case and like a laptop so um
2:13 so yeah we went to define our five it's quiet it looks good it's
2:17 black it's fractal it's reasonably well built
2:21 uh in terms of motherboard things get a little bit of more of a long story this
2:25 is actually not the motherboard we intended to buy but it doesn't make that
2:29 much of a difference we were going to use the deluxe this is
2:32 the x99a i think it's missing
2:35 basically so we'll have to fight excuse me we'll have to find some kind of solution to that particular little
2:40 little whoopsie um for CPU this is pretty cool
2:46 now a normal youtuber probably would have
2:50 told our winner hey you could get yourself an extreme edition
2:55 but i'm Linus so i was like hey
2:58 let's get an e5 2690 v3
3:01 i don't even remember how many cores that has i'm going to have to look it up
3:05 right now in case you guys are wondering here's a really cool pro tip arc ark is Intel's
3:10 little site for finding out all the information you could want to know about
3:14 pretty much all of their cpus so the 2690 v3 is a
3:24 he stalls for time he hits specifications
3:29 so it's 12 core CPU that runs at a nominal frequency of around 2.6
3:33 gigahertz but can turbo boost up with pretty much the best of them so
3:38 that was why we went with that uh what else we got here there's some cool stuff
3:43 oh okay so RAM we went with the ecc RAM
3:46 we got uh 64 gigs so four 16 gig sticks
3:52 of ecc memory because quite frankly it's gotten to the point where memory is fast
3:56 enough and so is so our cpus so this is uh 2133 megahertz stuff some samsung
4:02 stuff that was on the qvl for the deluxe board
4:06 so i really hope it works otherwise i'm going to be stuck with some RAM that i
4:10 don't need and the winner ryland is going to end up
4:13 with some of my RAM if it if it comes to that all right in terms of coolers here's
4:18 another little little mistake we were we asked for some knock 201 they sent us a
4:22 cooler master hyper 212 yield the reality of it is um these zeons in spite
4:26 of all their cores actually don't run very hot
4:29 it helps to have the heat distributed more so that cooler is going to do just
4:34 fine for us and you can't overclock the ons anyway so really really not too
4:37 worried about that in terms of power supply
4:41 we went with an rm1000i i had actually he picked this
4:45 out himself and i was like dude it's a thousand watt power supply you don't
4:49 need a thousand watt power supply and he was like yeah but it's a really good deal
4:53 and i was like you're right uh this was a really good
4:58 deal when we ordered it so i was like okay you can have your overkill power supply i guess that's fine
5:02 uh these are cool so a lot of people
5:05 uh including including rylan don't know this but you can actually buy just
5:10 generic RAM sticks that don't have heat spreaders on them because remember guys
5:14 the heat spreaders really don't do anything so you can just buy like whatever RAM
5:18 sticks you want and then you can actually get pretty cool looking here
5:22 i'm going to switch to my alternate angle here you can get pretty cool looking um like after like aftermarkety
5:28 looking heat spreaders that actually look pretty cool so we picked
5:32 up four of those although it should be noted that buying
5:36 those uh aftermarket is quite a bit more expensive
5:39 than buying them included with your RAM so you don't end up saving a ton of
5:44 money the only reason we ended up doing it was that we wanted to um
5:50 we wanted to get ecc memory none of which comes with like
5:53 cool gamery looking heat spreaders or anything like that
5:56 for storage we went with the usual so we've got our uh
6:01 we've got our one terabyte samsung 850 pro
6:05 and then we've got our solid-state storage backed up by two wd red six
6:09 terabyte drives he actually didn't specify how he wants those set up so i'm
6:13 going to put them in raid one because i suspect six terabytes is more than
6:17 enough for him we went with Linus tech tips edition
6:20 nff12 fans yes my friends i wasn't going to miss an opportunity to sell some of
6:24 my fans uh to my fans uh also we went with the
6:27 hugh plus which wish i hold this which way is
6:31 right side up for you i guess this one there we go with an nzxt hue plus in
6:35 order to throw some illumination inside and finally i guess that leads us to our
6:40 graphics card so rylan actually did what any sort of excited person who gets a
6:46 huge budget for building a computer does and put titan x's into the machine and i
6:51 went ryland ryland ryland
6:55 we can get you the same performance if not better
6:59 with a couple of these for a fraction of the cost and we can spend all that other
7:02 money on other really cool stuff so he ended up with like a camera notebook
7:07 um like two pairs of jaybird uh wireless
7:11 earphones like a bunch of a bunch of really cool stuff because we saved money
7:15 without compromising on performance so let's start the way we usually do i
7:20 am live streaming what can i do for you sir
7:24 the camera mic is on the camera mic is not on so there's that
7:35 why am i why am i being informed now and not like 15 minutes ago um
7:45 oh it's while i have the overhead cam up
7:49 i see hmm oh bloody hell
7:59 apparently this one has its microphone
8:02 on
8:06 well then hmm
8:12 i don't actually know how to turn that off
8:20 that's an idea
8:25 okay well hopefully that fixes it
8:30 yes friends hopefully that fixes it indeed
8:39 all right boom well let's see if that uh is fixed
8:43 apparently my flies my fly is half open
8:48 i shall demonstrate for you half see the bottom half is actually
8:52 zipped yes friends only half
8:57 only half unzipped all right so let's start this build the way that we usually
9:02 do with the motherboard inside the motherboard box we will find
9:06 the accessories that we need like our i o plate our sli bridge
9:11 uh and three SATA cables
9:16 dang it it always messes with my ocd when i have
9:20 to use uh when i have to use one
9:24 right angle SATA cable and the others are straight
9:28 it's going to kill me all right
9:32 i'm going to go ahead and take off the anti-static bag
9:36 and i'm gonna put that back in the box and that'll be it for that motherboard
9:41 box we don't need any other of the action inside there
9:48 you know what's really funny is because i don't have to like painstakingly film
9:53 all of this this is probably going to this video
9:56 probably isn't going to be much longer than my usual build guides always were
10:02 even though i don't actually get the benefit of video editing today i have to
10:07 actually do the whole thing live so CPU installation
10:11 always double check even i double check
10:14 after all these times installing cpus make sure the golden corner aligns with
10:19 the other more different golden corner triangle thing boop
10:23 oh i always do that i close up the motherboard box before i remember to put
10:26 on the socket cover socket cover is important keep that in your motherboard
10:30 box because if you ever have to rma your motherboard they're gonna ask you to put that on before you send it back and if
10:34 you don't have it they may actually reject your rma and maybe for good
10:38 reason because you can oops
10:41 because you can damage the uh you can damage the motherboard socket pretty
10:44 easily without that cover on all right
10:48 next up is RAM and this will be more interesting than it usually is because i
10:52 have never installed these akust
10:56 iron max RAM sinks before
11:00 yes friends i have actually no idea how to install them so
11:06 okay it involves a screwdriver
11:09 dang it where's an ifixit kit when you need it oh there's one
11:16 okay so uh i did say i would pay attention to
11:21 twitch chat and then i proceeded to not not notice uh
11:26 any of the things that they said about my audio issues
11:30 oh the motherboard's not broken you guys need to all just calm your boobies down
11:35 a little bit it's all good in the hood
11:41 all right now one thing i'm a little uncertain
11:46 about is whether this RAM is actually going to work in this motherboard
11:50 so that's interesting so that's just a foam
11:54 doodad this is one really tricky thing about
11:59 installing these aftermarket memory spreaders is
12:03 getting the memory module centered
12:06 because if you if you're off by too much then when they're all installed next to
12:10 each other they're gonna look really really weird
12:14 um okay so i'm gonna have to try and remember this i want stickers stickers
12:19 up
12:25 that looks about right how adhesive is this oh it's not that sticky okay
12:36 yep this is how boring it is when i do
12:40 this stuff unedited there's an awful lot of tedious like oh line the little thing
12:46 on the other little thing and then and then
12:49 screw it down
12:53 nice head shot oh sorry did i just have you guys staring at the back of my head
12:57 i didn't even get a haircut this weekend i actually meant to
13:00 i was trying to get my wife to do it for me but she wouldn't what did i do
13:14 upside down
13:20 that looks fine i don't know
13:27 all right so this my friends is what it's going to
13:32 look like installed in the motherboard you can see out here actually i'm going
13:35 to switch to the other angle so you can see even this like servery memory can
13:40 actually look pretty uh pretty gamertastic if you go and throw yourself
13:44 a little aftermarket heat spreader thing on there here's another another angle at
13:48 that i'm going to go ahead and throw this on the motherboard
13:53 there you go looks about as like
13:57 gamery and performancy as pretty much anything so
14:01 all right let's uh sorry i'm having trouble remembering which ones are my
14:05 hot keys i'm gonna i'll i'll definitely talk to
14:08 twitch chat now i'll definitely show twitch i'll talk to
14:12 twitchchat now the green ruins it what green
14:17 oh the green pcb you know okay the thing about the whole green pcb
14:22 thing is like did you know that green pcbs are
14:26 legitimately cheaper for one thing i did not know that a black pcb does add cost
14:33 to the part and on servers that is a completely unnecessary cost because
14:39 literally no one on earth cares that their server has a black pcb
14:44 on the memory um where was i going with this i'm fairly
14:48 sure this was important
14:52 little known fact did you know something something green peace be you know
14:55 nothing okay RAM yeah it doesn't the green pcb really doesn't bother me that
14:59 much on RAM because once it's installed you really can't see
15:04 it very well so unless you're really getting in there
15:08 with like the macro lens with your slr and you're like determined to have your
15:13 build be like totally perfect for a million dollar pc or something
15:16 those kinds of little details don't matter as much to me as having a system
15:21 that's 100 stable so
15:24 ecc RAM is it necessary for most applications no
15:29 but does it eliminate yet another potential
15:33 source of of instability yes it does
15:39 what else we got here
15:42 so that is why my macbook something
15:46 minus i'm basically building a server ah no i wouldn't call this a server there's
15:50 a lot of things that make a computer a personal computer or a
15:54 server ecc memory is one of them that i would definitely
15:59 consider to be on the on the server side of things
16:02 um because you can you can definitely have a desktop computer that is stable
16:07 enough with unbuffered dimms but in order for this to qualify as a
16:12 server it would have to be a lot of other stuff as well so for one thing we
16:16 wouldn't be running a consumer grade motherboard we'd be running some kind of
16:19 a server board ASUS has stuff available super micro is
16:22 very popular but yeah we'd be running a server board
16:27 and server boards aren't really suitable for desktop and workstation applications
16:30 for a number of reasons mostly because they
16:34 trade they trade off their their no-nonsense
16:38 stability for well nonsense and features
16:42 and stuff so they tend not to have a lot of the features that as consumers we
16:46 really want to see on our products so
16:49 you know if you expect to have you know Thunderbolt and uh you know a whack ton
16:54 of usb ports and all that stuff you're not
16:57 going to find that on a server board the other thing that a server typically has
17:01 that this machine doesn't is a lot of fail safes so we're just using a single
17:06 non-redundant power supply that means if the power supply fails
17:10 the system shuts down and and potentially even parts of it don't work
17:15 anymore i'm not saying i expect an rm1000i to
17:18 fail it's a very good power supply but
17:22 i'm saying that if it failed it would be very very bad on a server you would want
17:26 to be using a redundant power supply where there's actually two
17:30 separate completely independent power supply modules within a single unit and
17:33 if one of them fails outright stops working the whole thing continues to work in
17:38 fact one of our servers here actually has a triple redundant power supply i'm
17:43 just going to change up the angle just for the sake of i don't know just having
17:46 a bit of a different angle while i talk for a bit
17:49 um the bot is unforgiving yes the bot is
17:52 unforgiving for certain things where we've had a lot of problems in the past
17:57 i love our bot actually it's great it
18:00 makes life a lot easier for us it's fantastic
18:04 um what is this build for got some people asking questions that i answered
18:08 at the beginning of the stream way to not tune in immediately
18:13 loser no i'm just kidding you're not a loser i know twitch is the loser because
18:18 they only send notifications sort of approximately when they feel like it um
18:22 this is for the winner of the ultra wide festival
18:26 ultimate dream setup machine thing so um
18:31 yeah this is this is his this is his rig
18:34 i'm putting together the with the does this have 64 gigs of RAM yeah i guess it
18:39 does that is freaking sick
18:42 freaking sick yo all right
18:47 boom so there you have it i'll give you guys a better look at that
18:52 that is what it looks like
18:55 with all those uh memory sticks there installed
18:59 not bad huh for ecc dimms
19:04 yes friends all right
19:08 what else we got here what do i do next usually right CPU cooler so hyper 212
19:13 evo
19:17 uh where's my knife there it is
19:20 let's see which chat we're like 64 gigs for a gaming rig yeah well remember too
19:25 um it was kind of a creator-oriented
19:29 uh contest so uh i'm very certain that especially with
19:34 the camera that he picked up he actually had to borrow a camera in
19:37 order to participate in the contest but he now with his new dream setup has his
19:41 own so with the camera that he picked up i'm pretty sure he intends to do some
19:45 content creation on this rig as well so in that case that uh that extra RAM
19:51 will actually be helpful okay i need to go get a garbage can this is driving me
19:54 crazy
20:06 okay
20:10 there we are funny story i have actually
20:14 never mounted a hyper 212 evo
20:18 but i'm going to try and do it without the instructions
20:21 okay so that appears to be a hold down plate of some sort
20:26 that appears to be a fan of some sort
20:29 that appears to be oh my goodness what is that
20:33 it's okay don't worry i got this i got this you guys
20:38 what the heck
20:41 yeah sure okay i still remember when like heat pipe
20:46 direct touch looks like a big deal i think zigmatech
20:49 started that nonsense sorry i'm just i'm thinking because i'm
20:53 thinking out loud because this cooler has the heat pipes
20:57 directly contacting the CPU
21:01 yes my friends i do i vaguely remember back when
21:06 back when CPU coolers were changing really fast you know back when thermal
21:10 write was releasing stuff like the xp90c and we were all like
21:14 whoa man it's like a full copper heat sink man
21:22 what the heck is this
21:25 okay yep yep okay there's a thing that holds it in
21:29 the place to something something
21:33 can i help whoever's here with something
21:37 what the heck
21:47 that is weird okay well let's not stress about that
21:51 let's put the uh wow that's really nice the way they
21:56 put all the hardware and a little uh clam shell for you here
22:00 i like that that is a nice touch cooler master
22:05 and give credit where credit is due
22:10 okay now
22:19 there is less credit due here unless i'm not supposed to use that back plate at
22:24 all which may actually be the case it's possible i'm just supposed to put these
22:27 puppies in yep looks like that's how it's done
22:31 2011 mounting is always a bit of a always a bit of a challenge but not
22:36 always uh some companies do it really well Noctua does it really well uh be
22:40 quiet does it particularly poorly
22:43 where just some guys it's like a total afterthought it basically doesn't work
22:47 at all and you're just kind of like well what the heck because our our thermal testing
22:52 platform is an lga 2011 test bench and
22:56 so be quiet! every time they sent us a cooler back when we really did heatsink
23:00 reviews they'd be like whoa why are you guys begging on us for our 2013 mount
23:04 he'd be like well because it's trash it's terrible they're
23:09 like yeah but most people don't use it i'm like that's nice we do
23:13 so the people who re with a different
23:16 platform they'll like it and we won't
23:20 wait a minute dang it okay i'm resorting to the
23:24 instructions because i don't know which of the
23:28 correctly threaded doodads i'm supposed to put in
23:34 so gets the taller one
23:38 and
23:44 bloody hell
23:47 um yep
23:50 2011 gets the skinnier ones knew that was gonna happen
23:55 again the benefits of video editing
24:00 when you screw something up oh just completely get it wrong you can just
24:05 undo that part and not show it except sometimes when we do anyway because we
24:10 screw up sometimes even in the video editing part of things
24:16 what's twitch chat one
24:19 hope he sees the amount of thermal paste you're supposed to put on according to
24:23 the graphic i will i promise to check that out i promise to check that out and
24:27 then if it's any more than like a little bit i will completely ignore it
24:33 just for you guys
24:38 that was actually my favorite moment in austin's uh borinator
24:42 bornator build log thing that he and i worked on together where he gives it to
24:47 me the expert to put the thermal paste on and i'm just like
24:52 very fun you guys should check out that uh check out that
24:55 that build log thing if you haven't already austin evans channel
24:59 i actually am shipping the pc out to the winner today
25:03 as we speak i am doing actually Colton is doing it but uh that's basically the
25:07 same as me doing it all right thermal compound i promised to
25:13 look at the instructions for this so where are we where we got where's that
25:19 oh nice there you go guys that's how much
25:23 thermal paste to put on just like that don't worry about it just go go ham go
25:28 ham no big deal no friends we're gonna put on we'll put
25:31 on a little bit more than usual because this is a larger CPU and it does have a
25:36 lot of CPU cores in there a lot of people get really wrapped up in
25:41 the in the how much thermal compound
25:44 ah dang it well how much is pretty important but a lot of people get really
25:48 wrapped up in the how to apply thermal compound argument when the truth of the
25:51 matter is that it's within a degree or two
25:55 pretty much however you put it on it's it's really not that big of a deal
25:59 um so unless you're unless you're going for like
26:03 sub-zero elite hacksaw overclock zors or
26:07 or whatever and even if you are that
26:10 degree is really very unlikely to make that big of a
26:14 difference using the right type of thermal compound
26:17 is actually quite a bit more important like if you are going subzero for
26:21 example you want to use a thermal compound that
26:24 that had that handle sub-zero temperature some of them really don't work very well at very low temperatures
26:29 for example um ceramic is apparently the the go-to
26:33 for those for that crowd or at least it was a long time ago i'm pretty i'm
26:38 pretty out of the loop as far as the whole extreme overclocking thing goes
26:41 these days
26:45 all right let's get this puppy
26:48 mounted now maybe you guys can tell me
26:52 cooler master or cooler master
26:57 these are important details i think we're going to go this way
27:00 there's another thing people get really stressed out about that really just doesn't matter that much is
27:05 lifting up and and reseeding the heatsink once the once the goop is
27:09 already on there it really isn't that big of a deal i've
27:12 actually taken just old test benches
27:16 popped off the cooler worked on it put it back on
27:20 really doesn't matter um i did that as just like a test for
27:24 myself i didn't end up making a video about it but i did do that at one point
27:29 where i took like a really old thermal compound
27:33 application and
27:37 like took it off and put it back on and took it off and put it back on several
27:41 times and then i did a brand new fresh application to see if that would make a
27:46 difference and it did not
27:50 it was within the margin of error which is like realistically a couple of
27:55 degrees actually
28:00 okay look at that awesome
28:05 now i think i was actually supposed to use the taller one but it doesn't really
28:08 matter as long as i don't completely overdo it with the pressure uh this is fine i'm not gonna i'm not
28:13 gonna overdo this
28:18 um turkey cola hmm
28:22 what's up with the video stutter i don't know
28:26 i have no idea here maybe i should switch angles maybe
28:29 that'll help i don't actually expect that to help i'm just
28:33 being unhelpful
28:37 i'm kind of glad we went lga 2011 on this uh on this system
28:41 with all the things i've been hearing about skylake and CPU's bending and
28:44 shipping this is a system that i intend to ship to the winner so you know what
28:49 that's really not that tight actually i'm gonna go all the way then
28:53 i think that's where the stopper is yeah yeah it's not too bad
28:57 all right
29:10 all right this is one thing i also like to check is just have a look at if you want to
29:14 evaluate your mounting pressure if your board is bowing like crazy then that's
29:18 that's probably not really what you were going for this one seems to be
29:21 completely fine
29:25 speaking of being completely fine it's really lucky that we ended up with um
29:30 with a cooler that was going to work for us here given that they
29:34 didn't ship the one that we had wanted
29:37 because lga 2011 you know you can mount
29:41 pretty much any cooler on it almost everyone has compatibility with
29:44 it but many coolers out there don't work
29:48 optimally with it if you want to install a whole bunch of memory sticks because
29:51 you've got memory slots on both sides of the CPU
29:58 so it happens that the hyper 212
30:01 this i think this is what the evo yeah hyper 212 evo is one of the ones that
30:04 does work just fine
30:08 if you install a bunch of RAM
30:14 all right so put that accessory back in the box
30:20 okay so we're done with our CPU cooler i was sure i was doing something else
30:25 right now right Linus tech tips edition fan friends
30:29 i can read you guys the little letter that's inside them
30:32 if you didn't order one you won't have seen this letter yet dear fan
30:37 you not the thing in the box the Linus tech tips team won't make any outrageous
30:41 claims about how we co-engineered this special edition nff12
30:46 pwm which is probably a good thing because as our regular viewers know we
30:50 are not exactly mechanical engineers that's why we left the product development entirely to Noctua knowing
30:54 it would deliver the same outstanding performance quality and reliability that we've come to expect from their brown
30:59 and tan fans over the last decade so
31:02 what did we do something we've wanted to do since we
31:06 first laid eyes on the nf s12 we picked
31:09 the color scheme it's the same great nff 12 pwm fan but now in Linus tech tips
31:15 black and orange thanks for being a part of this i sincerely hope you love this fan as much as i love all of mine you're
31:20 sincerely lioness sebastian alliance media group ceo
31:24 so i'm going to have to uh do some cajiggering here in order to get
31:28 this puppy mounted
31:32 so you can see the the stock fan here is has got these little noise isolator tabs
31:36 on it so i'm going to pop those off and i'm going to try and reuse them after
31:41 there we go take out these screws
31:52 oh what do you mean the fan is going to be dead
31:56 telegenic boss it is not going to be dead it's going to be awesome
32:01 actually i was talking to one of the one of the resellers for them and they said
32:05 they got something like 2 out of 1000 back or something like that
32:09 so that is uh that is to be considered a fairly good uh fairly good defective
32:14 rate in fact i don't even think that um
32:17 that the fan was actually dead i think it was just someone changed their mind
32:21 so yeah take that
32:25 fans gonna be dead
32:28 yeah right i mean to be clear nothing is perfect
32:32 but we just i mean we wanted to pick something that we thought we were going
32:35 to have a pretty darn good chance of having work so
32:40 so we went with nff12s
32:44 i mean to be clear i know that you don't need an ff12 fan in order to get like
32:49 really good performance out of a fan it's just you know best of the best and all that
32:53 and it's not because i think that you have to spend 30 on a fan either it's
32:57 just for me if i'm gonna put my name on something i
33:01 want it to just i want to be sure that it's really really good i don't want i
33:05 don't want that stress of people being like well i bought the Linus tech tips
33:08 edition one thinking it was the best and now i don't trust Linus anymore because
33:12 my fan died and like you know how people are like some people don't really get
33:16 that any product can have
33:20 a defect um shoot
33:24 don't worry this is no big deal just got to pull this sticker RAM out and put
33:27 this on and then get back to it
33:33 can i help you Colton caltane
33:41 his gamer handle he's really creative that Colton he
33:44 managed to change two whole vowels
33:52 follow me on twitch yeah right
33:56 i refuse to follow you on twitch all right let's have a look at this
34:02 so that friends is what it's looking like now
34:06 not too shabby right for like all
34:10 servery stuff and all that
34:14 all right okay what's next i guess
34:18 i'll put uh oh well i forgot those
34:22 rubber tabs so i guess those are going back in the hyper 212 box rylan if you're watching this i'm sorry i forgot
34:26 your rubber tabs they're not going back on there now because
34:29 i'm live streaming and people got places to go and people to see
34:33 they don't want to see me put on that tab again
34:37 sorry buddy your system's basically a failure
34:42 it's a failure waiting to happen
34:45 but at least it comes with this cool Linus tech tips case badge
34:55 all right
35:08 what does uh twitch chat want
35:16 worth it to upgrade from 3570k to 6600k
35:20 casualgamer you know i don't know it really depends are you
35:25 running into CPU bottlenecks in your games you'll notice because
35:29 your frame rates will be lower than other people who have the same graphics
35:32 card as you are reporting although something to bear in mind is that the
35:36 internet is full of people who are getting 500 frames per second in every
35:39 game with an 8400 gs so
35:44 yeah there's there's there's three pieces there's three pieces of the calculation
35:49 and a lot of people conveniently leave out a very important
35:53 one there's your frames per second there's your graphics card
35:56 and then there's the detail settings that you are running the game at
36:01 that is very very very important so
36:04 people be like yeah i got like this wicked hd 5450 it runs shadow of ward
36:11 door at like 80 FPS i'll be like okay a
36:15 no it doesn't you're a liar and
36:18 b what resolution and settings are you running yeah man i'm running 1080p man
36:24 i'm like okay did you have to do like some
36:27 some like eye and eye edits in order to get the details turned
36:32 down low enough like i didn't know they had negative anti-aliasing
36:37 uh like like just plain aliasing it's
36:40 like i'm just gonna add aliasing to my game
36:43 um so yeah the problem is that you can't really rely on the reports of people
36:47 online although some review sites
36:51 will show you what benchmarking run they use and they will give you numbers that are
36:55 actually reputable and then what you can do is you can you
36:59 can just see you can go like kind of oh how am i how am i performing compared to
37:02 that and if it's not very good then your CPU is probably what's holding you back
37:06 but the question to ask yourself too is does it matter
37:10 um do you need 90 FPS if you have 80 FPS
37:14 i can tell you right now unless you have a monitor that runs at
37:17 90 hertz the answer is probably no
37:35 um
37:38 okay so
37:42 that isn't what was supposed to happen
37:52 huh
37:55 wow how did how did this happen
38:00 i don't know i mean technically this will work fine
38:06 it's really not what i would have preferred
38:10 um let me think
38:13 let me think hey um luke can i interrupt you for a minute
38:17 did we ship evga back all those cards yet yeah
38:20 we did yeah oh
38:27 do we have an evga 980 ti with an acx
38:31 2.0 cooler
38:35 so we managed to order a reference card and
38:38 an acx card oh oh
38:44 what you know what i might just have to put
38:48 it together and send it to rylan to figure out if he
38:52 can do an exchange for something like that because
38:55 i have to get this i'm sure he'd rather be using the system than have me muck
38:59 around with trying to get a card swapped out but that is that is that is definitely
39:05 not what the objective was today to have two different cards um i can use this
39:09 though as an opportunity to talk about sli compatibility and how it works
39:20 like ah yeah sli compatibility and how it works
39:26 basically as on the NVIDIA side as long as you have two of the same GPU with the
39:31 same amount of RAM they didn't used to require the same RAM amount in theory
39:35 although very few people ever got it to work with
39:38 very few driver uh versions and very few like uh you
39:43 know cool bits tweaks or whatever else so as long as you have the same GPU so
39:47 that's like gtx 980 not a 980 and a 980
39:50 ti not a 980 and a 980 se
39:54 two 980 ti's or two 980s or two 970s the
39:58 same thing no matter what brand they are you've got
40:01 you know your evga or Gigabyte or whatever else no matter what clock speed
40:05 they run at no matter what coolers they are no matter what pcb design so you can
40:09 even have like a an evga kingpin card
40:12 and like a you know reference card from Gigabyte or
40:17 something they will run an sli
40:20 at the speed at the lower speed of the two so it's not a compatibility issue
40:26 it's just an aesthetic issue um
40:30 all right so this is the nzxt hue
40:35 inside we will find a controller box
40:38 i've actually never used this one before i recommended it to ryland um having
40:43 heard good things about it but i've never i've never actually used
40:54 now it's broken this is what he gets for letting me
40:57 build this computer
41:03 i got to figure out how to get the stupid led strip so the hue is has got like a
41:07 front bay controller mixer thing that lets you mix your red green and blue led
41:11 strips and then it's got a whole bunch of led strips inside that you can like connect
41:17 together with these little connector doodadlies and then you've got the
41:21 controller box that lets you plug in a couple of things to it it's
41:25 got like usb control and all that kind of cool stuff so basically just a more more elegant
41:30 way of handling this stuff than just you know back in the day we
41:34 had to use inverters which by the way were all garbage every single one of
41:38 them was trash so we had to use these inverters
41:41 and then we had to use cathode tubes all of which failed uh
41:47 eventually even if their inverters didn't i actually on a number of occasions had inverters so those are dc
41:53 to ac electricity conversion things i had them melt inside my case and like
41:58 almost start fires those were awful i'm so glad that led lighting is a thing for
42:02 computers now all right so we're going to put all
42:06 those parts kind of over here i guess and get to them later got our hard
42:10 drives wd reds a lot of people think wd red is
42:15 only for nas let me ask you this
42:19 what is a computer with a bunch of hard drives in it
42:22 if not a nas yes
42:26 network attached storage if your computer is on the network and it has
42:30 storage and you're sharing it
42:34 it's a nas
42:40 what are you gentlemen up to anyway
42:43 oh lens things
42:48 oh cool
42:51 they're better why is the door closed though
42:56 okay so you'd rather get cancer than be cold
43:00 because that's what i'm hearing
43:03 oh you turned the heater off yeah we had the heater on in here this morning
43:07 and we've never actually turned it on before so it basically smelled like cancer in
43:12 the studio all day like it it was some pretty
43:19 yeah it was some pretty it was some pretty bad news
43:24 stuff which is weird because i'm used to turning on a heater for the first time
43:28 and having it be kind of like a burning smell but uh yeah
43:36 yeah but that wasn't burning that was like that was like burning your lungs
43:43 okay so i'm gonna do one of those things that i always try but never works
43:49 but i always try anyway because i'm like that
43:54 i'm going to take everything out of the power supply box
43:58 that i believe i will need down to every modular cable i intend to
44:02 use and see if i can actually get it right
44:06 like i said it never works i know this
44:09 but i'm still going to try
44:15 ah look at that only one seal to break in here boom
44:22 okay so we will need a power cord we will need some cable ties we will not
44:27 need silica gel modular cables
44:33 we will need this four plus six pin pci express
44:38 we will need this one too we will need
44:42 this CPU power connector we will need oh how is the hue powered
44:49 dc 5 volt okay it must have an adapter yes it does
44:53 okay so we will need whatever the
44:58 lowest number of connector molex adapter
45:01 harness that we have is it looks like this one this one has
45:05 three some power supply makers ship one with
45:08 two but i guess we'll have to live with three okay we will need our 24 pin
45:14 and we will need
45:18 four SATA cables
45:22 hopefully that's good
45:27 we will also need the power supply i love these little baggies the Corsair
45:31 packs their power supplies in i'm not convinced they're actually
45:34 expensive but they feel really premium little velvet
45:38 baggy doodads
45:41 okay this is the foam by the way that my cat ate or like not this foam exactly
45:46 obviously i'm i just got this power supply and he ate foam months ago but
45:50 this type of foam this this really soft closed cell black foam that you find in
45:55 Corsair power supply boxes that's not actually where he got it it's just
45:58 really similar to the stuff that he ate all right
46:02 so there's our rm1000i here's all our accessories that we need
46:06 and now it is finally enough stalling actually time to crack
46:11 open the case and start building the machine
46:16 i might have to just do this off camera i'm sorry guys it's kind of heavy and
46:19 awkward to deal with up there
46:32 oh i did that thing i always do
46:35 pro tip oh never mind it worked anyway okay forget
46:39 it ow static
46:59 all right yeah baby
47:02 there it is how many people are watching this wow 4
47:06 600 people watching the live computer building
47:10 i should start like performing
47:13 do like deadline a circus he is building
47:17 computers
47:24 i don't know if anyone would watch that
47:28 although some people internally have been pitching the idea of us doing like
47:31 some kind of a live show at some point like i don't know
47:35 what that would look like but uh it seems like it'd be a pretty cool idea
47:42 like kind of just even i don't know q a or something
47:45 i don't know all right side panel off
47:52 what shall we start with
47:59 okay just checking had kind of a kind of
48:02 a panic moment there i was like does this board support sli
48:07 it does which is good because we're running sli
48:16 okay what slots this one
48:20 and this one so we leave one gap and do
48:24 another two there we go
48:30 so they'll either have to send rylan the other board to swap out or
48:35 throw in a wi-fi card or something like that it's really not that big of a deal in terms of build quality i don't think
48:39 the x99a and the x99 deluxe are really
48:42 that different and in terms of features aside from the wi-fi i actually couldn't
48:45 really find anything that mattered like i suspect there's some like weirdo
48:49 features that that are there or not there but
48:52 nothing really important this is cool Corsair has to put this
48:56 warning on their power supplies okay guys
49:00 it's all right if the fan in your power supply is not spinning
49:05 it is literally supposed to do that that is literally a feature
49:09 it's good i love that feature why spin the fans if you don't have to
49:15 there's no such thing as a silent fan except a fan that is off
49:20 can i help you brandon
49:23 you're looking for something are you looking for love brandon
49:27 because love is right here it's right here brandon
49:32 it's right here inside of you
49:35 and me at the same time it's a it's a very uh
49:42 it's a very liberal sort of love it's an all over the place love
49:55 what cable do you need
49:58 oh yeah i won't be able to help you with that it's not in my bin by the way
50:02 okay usually i'm a pretty good person to turn
50:07 to when you need help finding a cable
50:11 yeah not as good as me didn't i own you the other day
50:22 brendan and i are keeping score kind of like uh
50:25 like legolas and the other guy give me
50:29 in the middle earth movies that don't suck
50:33 um who can find
50:36 who can find things in like 30 seconds that other people can't find and then
50:41 between us we're finding out who can do it most often and
50:44 most consistently because i swear no one else in this
50:48 entire company could find anything
50:51 to save their lives it's like i can't find a
50:55 multimeter like did you try that drawer where we
50:58 keep the multimeters brilliant
51:05 all right so the power supply is in if you're into
51:09 that sort of thing um
51:12 i had some people asking me to take the drive cage out i actually can't think of
51:16 a reason why not we can take it out even if it's just to
51:19 get it out of our way that's one of the cool features of this case
51:22 boom more ventilation for the gpus just like
51:26 that my friends and because we only have three drives
51:30 um we can just mount everything in this
51:33 lower cage and we're in pretty good shape there
51:36 okay so i think especially with
51:40 a little bit more open air and all that kind of stuff i
51:44 think we're gonna get away with not opening up the top mod event so i think
51:47 i'm just gonna go ahead and boom put the uh put the motherboard right oh
51:52 i am getting spoiled i'm getting used to
51:55 uh motherboard standoffs being pre-installed
51:59 and this particular one is not um hold on i gotta grab my motherboard
52:04 standoff screwdriver yes i do actually own a screwdriver
52:08 specifically for that just tech
52:13 things
52:17 here check it out oh i'm on the wrong camera angle oh i'm on the wrong camera angle there we go
52:22 so this is my little socketed uh socketed screwdriver just for installing
52:26 motherboard standoffs
52:29 they actually come with uh actually used
52:32 to come with a lot of cases so i've got a handful of them
52:36 but now everyone's cheaping out like fractal includes this horrendous
52:41 like stupid plastic adapter thing that you can put
52:45 around the stand off and then you can drive in with a phillips head screwdriver but really
52:50 guys plastic oh man i think liam lee was the one that used
52:54 to include these ones
52:59 cooler master uses a metal one oh i got people reminding me about the i
53:04 o shield i would have figured it out i would have
53:08 i definitely would have figured out that the i o shield is not in there don't
53:12 worry i don't remember the last time i
53:16 failed to install an io shield when i had one a lot of people are probably
53:20 going to bring up the i o shield that was missing in the build with my son but
53:24 the only reason that was missing was because luke had that i o shield in his
53:27 garage that is why i didn't install an io
53:31 shield and i have since followed that up with him and it has been retrieved so
53:36 next time i build a system with that motherboard which i actually intend to
53:39 do fairly soon i'm going to be doing like a really cool ltd edition build
53:44 so next time i do that i will be i'll be using the i o shield
53:54 okay why power supply fan side up uh there's
54:00 a reason for that if i was building this for myself
54:03 i would probably go power supply fan down
54:07 and the reason for that is that it keeps the power supply heat isolated from the rest of the system however because this
54:13 is not for me the thing about fractal cases this one
54:17 in particular is that they have very short feet so if this case were to be
54:22 installed on a relatively plush carpet it would actually come up leaving only
54:26 like a fraction of a centimeter of space between this bottom
54:30 fan filter guy here and the actual intake on the
54:34 bottom of the case so installing the power supply fan side up
54:39 is sort of the um less optimal but safer way if you don't
54:45 know how the system is going to be used look at
54:50 that so that's why i did that
54:54 like plush carpet well yeah carpet that's more plush plush is a word
54:59 i don't mean just like shag carpet like the feet on this case really aren't very
55:03 tall so really any carpet could be a potential
55:06 airflow issue and i've actually killed power supplies that way just putting the
55:11 system on a carpet forgetting that it was one that had the fan on the bottom
55:14 of the power supply like not opening it up to check because why would i think of
55:18 that and i have actually killed systems like that so
55:22 yep these little lessons that you learn
55:29 people are telling me the fan is upside down
55:36 well okay i don't know all right let's get our motherboard
55:39 installed here one thing that i really like about this case is it has this cool little nub in the middle so that your
55:44 motherboard doesn't shift around while you're trying to install it
55:53 why would you put a computer on carpet i don't know because you have carpet on
55:56 your floor and you have a small desk
56:00 it's not an atrocity it's fine
56:04 remember when your computer's plugged in like the thing's grounded like it
56:07 actually has a ground prong
56:10 i mean in most places i actually uh had to
56:16 um i had to rip the ground prong off of one
56:19 of my laptop charger cables when i was over in asia because we were in some
56:24 country i forget which one it was and almost none of the outlets there had a
56:27 ground prong i was like okay so it's 120 volt
56:32 there's the two prongs like like at home but then there's no ground prong
56:37 feel like crooked CPU cooler or whatever look it's adjustable
56:41 man you guys are you guys are killing me here
56:45 you guys are killing me here
56:51 all right wow this is actually kind of a nice
56:54 looking build i'm liking this white and black and just a touch of orange color
56:59 scheme thing that we've got going on here let's do some power supply cables
57:02 shall we
57:08 i got people asking me to mount the SSD behind the motherboard i actually could do that i don't think it's realistically
57:13 going to matter much because
57:16 that leaves us with only one extra expansion slot
57:21 in the case and without having to add the extra cage
57:25 but it's not a bad point i can probably do that i know fractal did one case i
57:30 can't remember which one it was like define r3 or something like that where
57:33 you actually couldn't install an SSD on the back of the motherboard tray
57:39 without taking the motherboard out
57:43 so i never recommended in that case
57:48 installing the SSD on the back because then if you ever had to get your SSD off
57:52 you would have to take the motherboard out as well but this one i don't believe that is the
57:56 case so it should be fine 24 pin etx peripheral blah blah blah
58:02 blah blah blah six plus two pin PCIe
58:06 six plus two pin PCIe
58:10 yeah i really don't know if we're gonna keep doing
58:13 build guides in the same way that we've been doing them before anymore like this
58:18 kind of stuff feels so routine for me now while i recognize that
58:22 you know some of our viewers are are new to us and
58:25 haven't seen this stuff before i just you know i hate i hate making content
58:31 that's boring for me and so mixing it up a little bit every time is i think what
58:36 keeps it fresh not just for you guys but for me and so like doing this live
58:39 stream thing was kind of like oh that's a novel idea yeah sure let's do it let's
58:42 do it live but we've had a lot of people request more
58:46 of our traditional style build guides which i personally think are great i think they're the best
58:50 pc build guides on the internet um
58:54 but i just i just don't know if we're gonna really continue to do them the way
58:57 that we the way that we used to
59:01 um blah blah blah are the new skylake i5s
59:05 overclockable motherboards you said would allow it on lan show i don't know
59:09 are they um i know that i had heard although i haven't personally tested it
59:13 yet i had heard that uh non-k skylake cpus are now
59:19 overclockable but um
59:24 yeah i haven't verified it yet i think
59:27 asrock and MSI are the only ones that have actually implemented the the patch
59:32 at this point and i don't have a ton of assrock or MSI on hand so
59:36 it's hard for me to verify something like that all right
59:39 let's turn this puppy around
59:42 there we go
59:47 i'm actually going to take off the back panel so i can start doing some cable management
59:54 that is the mark of an inexperienced builder doing cable management at the
59:58 end you always do cable management as you go otherwise it makes your life a lot more
60:02 difficult
60:08 ah these new power supplies with their newfangled i shouldn't even say new
60:11 actually some companies have been doing this for a very long time their newfangled uh
60:16 capacitors all over the 24 pin connector makes them quite a bit
60:21 bulkier to deal with but the folks at Corsair and i think i can't
60:27 remember who the first one to do this was was it pc power and cooling or something
60:32 i can't remember who did it first but apparently it helps with ripple
60:35 suppression or something or something which i'm sure matters to some extreme overclockers
60:40 somewhere in scandinavia
60:43 i don't know i'm at the point now where really a high it's not like it was in
60:47 the old days where like there were good power supplies and then
60:52 there were power supplies where basically you plugged them in and hoped
60:56 for the best like most anything from a fairly reputable
61:00 brand is is fairly good these days
61:04 um not really that worrying
61:08 where is the eight pin connector on this motherboard
61:11 oh it's kind of in the middle okay i'm gonna go through this other cable management hole here
61:17 so i tend not to stress about it too much for me it's more like features
61:21 um you know does it have modular cables
61:24 um yeah because unless you're really pushing the
61:28 limits which if you're honest with yourself you're not
61:32 because unless you're using liquid nitrogen to overclock you're really not pushing the limits
61:36 then it really doesn't make that much of a difference as long as you go with
61:40 something that's fairly decent like i'm not telling everyone to run out and buy
61:43 the cheapest power supply that they can find on newegg.com that is still
61:47 probably going to explode and kill things spectacularly at some point in
61:51 the future i just mean that whole thing where everyone was
61:55 buying you know hx1000 you know 1000 watt top of the line power supplies
62:00 um i really don't think is that important
62:04 anymore okay eight pin connector done i'm sorry i'm
62:08 just going to adjust the positioning of this so you guys can see
62:11 a little bit better this is my favorite way to deal with
62:15 these fans these days oh shoot i think i plugged into the
62:19 wrong CPU fan header boop
62:22 no big deal
62:26 all right where is my screwdriver in my back
62:31 pocket where it always is
62:36 i'm just going to coil this baby up um actually that's very slow never mind
62:41 i'm going to do it my less favorite way
62:45 so this is one of my other tricks though you take the fan
62:48 connector you run it around the outside of the fan itself and then if you can
62:52 you find a fan header that it just barely reaches and
62:56 then it usually won't go anywhere if it does go somewhere then you just run a
63:00 twist tie or a zip tie i usually like to use twist ties if i can because they're
63:05 a lot easier to take off if you screw something up but you run a twist tie
63:08 through one of the mounting holes on the fan you grab onto that cable and then boom
63:13 doesn't go anywhere and it looks really really clean without
63:17 actually doing like our custom length
63:20 fan cable or anything like that like all the kids are into these days
63:24 i'm actually very i'm getting to the point where i'm
63:27 getting very old school and the way i build computers another reason why i
63:32 feel like i should leave the guides to the people who are really more into it
63:36 these days the guys that are like yeah custom
63:39 length cables for this and hard pipe
63:43 cooling for that and i'm just like that sounds like a lot of work
63:48 you know because i'm old all right
63:54 um you know what i'm gonna finish my wire runs you know what i'm actually
63:59 not going to mount the SSD behind the motherboard tray because that way i can win
64:04 i can uh i can have taken out the right
64:09 modular cables from the power supply box so i'm cheating a little bit but yes i'm
64:14 going to do that
64:20 uh yeah i am actually planning to up this upload this video to the to the
64:24 channel i'm planning to not edit it and just upload the whole thing and kind of see
64:28 how it goes we don't do that kind of stuff very often where we do like experimental
64:32 formats on the uh on the channel so i just thought yeah
64:36 what the hey let's uh let's give it a shot it's not going to be the the full
64:39 release for tonight like it's going to be this and something else
64:44 but yeah yeah we are we are going to do that
64:48 so you guys will be able to see the whole thing if you missed any parts of it i mean not to mention that we are
64:52 streaming it on twitch so there is the uh there is the vod for that
64:58 speaking of streaming on twitch we've got a really really cool video coming on
65:01 vessel tonight it's um i create like like a diy
65:07 news reporter like mobile streaming backpack thing and
65:12 we go out and test it out it's actually pretty freaking cool
65:15 so you guys can check that out if you're into that sort of thing
65:21 most of what we do these days is kind of like that where it may not actually have
65:25 a ton of practical application but uh
65:29 it's mostly just like hey here's a really cool idea we had and
65:33 here goes
65:37 all right three four is that a six g i don't know whatever
65:41 let's do i don't know that one okay
65:45 let's run these puppies through here this is one of the things i really like
65:48 about this case is that the motherboard tray is actually stamped in so the
65:51 motherboard sits a little bit further back
65:55 than the cable management holes for your SATA cables right next to it that means
65:59 that when they run in there's really no no strain or tension on them
66:03 it's just a nice nice little touch it does take away some of the cable management room that you would otherwise
66:07 have behind the motherboard tray but i think it's a worthwhile trade-off
66:16 all right let's run our pci express connectors
66:21 what's up brandon
66:27 oh i can't believe it's almost six i am so thirsty right now
66:34 i don't think it helps that i sucked back that milkshake right before i started this oh i still have some
66:40 i'm totally having more milkshake oh it's completely liquid
66:44 okay no wendy's chocolate frosty that is
66:49 completely melted is a really really bad idea
66:54 i will regret that for sure
66:57 more than i already regret it i feel fat just drinking it
67:06 to be clear i don't mean i feel fat like like covered in rolls of fat i just mean
67:11 i feel like if i ate junk like that all
67:14 the time i would get fat very very quickly
67:18 okay that's the thing you get older your metabolism just kind of runs away from
67:23 you like it used to be i never had to worry about any of that stuff and i mean i'm
67:27 sure i'm not the only one telling this sad story but
67:31 really like it it used to be fine no matter what i did
67:36 and now it's just like i eat one wrong thing and i'm like wow i just ate one
67:41 pound of junk food and i just gained one pound
67:44 it's amazing how that math works
67:48 it shouldn't surprise me i know this but that doesn't change the fact that it
67:53 does
67:59 okay this 24 pin cable management is going to be a little bit tricky actually
68:03 there's really not a lot of space behind the motherboard tray on this case
68:10 there's really not a lot of space behind the motherboard tray on this case
68:21 okay front usb 2
68:25 front usb 2 what you gonna do
68:36 watch out i gotta take a poop
68:42 but don't worry you don't have to watch i won't make you
68:48 what do you think brandon should i quit my day job and become a rapper
68:53 you'll be my producer
68:57 what do you know about audio producing
69:05 god i hate you brandon
69:10 you crush all my dreams that's what rap taught me
69:16 that's what rap taught me chase your dreams
69:21 if incredibly talented people like jay-z can do it then surely i can
69:39 yeah see people are finally witnessing the kind of crap that i take around here
69:43 everyone hears what i dish out because i'm the like the on-camera personality
69:47 most of the time but the cold hard truth is i i take at least as much as i give
69:53 out around here
69:59 that's weird um
70:02 okay brandon the battery died
70:07 can i have a new can i have a new battery please
70:11 ah the uh the top one the other one's running off ac
70:15 maybe if you didn't break all our ac adapters we wouldn't have this problem
70:23 well it's taking longer than i said you should have known that was going to
70:27 happen mr producer
70:32 mr smart guy who claims to know anything about
70:35 producing
70:41 i would never hire someone so unproductive to be a producer
70:44 wow it's funny because brandon actually had
70:48 like a crazy productive day today he got with some help he got all of our our
70:54 lights mounted in our ceiling lighting grid thing uh it actually looks freaking
70:59 ba so
71:04 i can get out of the way if you'd like
71:07 sure i'll go let me go around the front i can actually cable manage this fan and
71:11 then there you go
71:18 yeah this video is more like a it's like closer to a behind the scenes than it is
71:22 to an actual release video
71:26 it's kind of cool i'm liking the vibe actually i'm liking the uh
71:30 discussion with the twitch chat i can't believe there's 4 500 people watching
71:34 on like an off time we've actually tried streaming not at our our scheduled time
71:38 before and let me tell you guys it has not gone very well like we don't tend to get
71:43 a ton of viewers when it's not our normal same bat time same channel nonsense
71:50 thank you brandon
71:54 you are a valuable and appreciated member of
71:57 this team yes have you seen penguin madagascar no okay
72:02 i can't remember what the exact quote is but it's something along those lines that's what they tell the mentally
72:06 handicapped one wow
72:14 i don't actually know if that's the politically correct term for
72:18 private i'm usually not that up on my
72:22 politically correctness
72:36 power led does this case have a reset switch i
72:40 think i might be missing one of my front connectors you know a lot of people use
72:44 those little things that um that ASUS includes
72:48 those little blocks that let you plug in all these front panel connectors and then plug the whole thing in one go i
72:52 never recommend it the reason is that it's um
72:56 it can interfere with long expansion cards sometimes you're much better off
73:00 to just do it right the first time install it correctly john john here is a
73:04 big fan of them but both luke and i are like no
73:08 you should not use those but he doesn't listen he just uses them
73:11 anyway because everyone just forgets their own path okay let's test this other camera angle again
73:16 yeah we're back baby okay
73:23 we're actually getting surprisingly close
73:26 drives drives that's the home stretch right brandon drives are the home
73:30 stretch always the home stretch
73:33 let me tell you guys we have done some we have done some build logs brandon and
73:38 i yes we have
73:41 drives are the home stretch gpus are like
73:45 you can you can smell it you can smell it it's almost over
73:49 and then the conclusion is just the conclusion it gets harder again because
73:53 you're just like oh this just it's just a few more bases until it's
73:58 over guys we have been at the office filming
74:03 to like we hours of the morning doing those build guides
74:07 i'm sorry 5am for your video i didn't even know
74:12 that for the a7s2 do you even want to do more camera
74:16 reviews okay okay
74:20 i'm down man
74:26 what's your next one going to be oh ursa mini that's right
74:31 what else do you have on kind of on your radar
74:38 oh yeah that'll be cool okay cool
74:43 yeah brandon wants to uh wants to go all
74:47 like kind of scrapyard wars on like camera camera stuff
74:52 so i i can't give i can't really give any more detail than that without sort
74:55 of giving away what he's doing but it's going to be it's going to be pretty freaking cool if you're into camera
74:59 stuff and even if you're not come on watch it
75:02 it's brandon he's nice we like him for some reason
75:09 killing your china balls which is less racist than it sounds by
75:13 the way it's much less racist can you show them
75:16 your china balls
75:22 thank you see it's on the other ankle
75:26 uh no no it's it's i i that one is real time yeah that one's don't worry it's
75:30 all good
75:36 no seriously china balls are a thing this is not this is not sexual
75:40 harassment and it is not racism
75:46 jeez i can't catch a break here
75:53 no i think they know that if i was if i was going to be racist i would just be
75:57 upfront about it besides i really don't think too many
76:01 people are going to accuse me of being racist against chinese people
76:12 nope i just dislike them all individually
76:18 just kidding for those of you who don't know my wife is chinese just throwing
76:21 that out there
76:25 i am not a racist person
76:28 ah this is cool though check this
76:32 out so fractal actually has a really smart hard drive sled design you can
76:38 mount the rubber things more towards the front or more towards the back depending
76:41 on whether you want like a nicer aesthetic or you want more cable
76:44 management room behind them i always go with more cable management room because i personally don't find that that
76:48 affects the aesthetic you can't really see it through the window and i also
76:55 there we go and i also really find that defining various cases need all the
76:59 cable management they can get oops i actually did that wrong
77:06 i was so busy explaining the cool and clever thing i was doing that i did it
77:10 wrong story of my freaking life
77:14 like our storage server
77:17 so busy showing you guys how to do it that i rush
77:21 that's what happened basically i was just in a hurry it's not that i don't
77:24 know the right way to do it i was just in a hurry
77:27 and i've got a lot of video projects that are relying on
77:31 making videos about those drives and all this stuff and so i was like okay i'm
77:34 going to take a shortcut and the shortcut was bad the shortcut led down
77:40 disaster junction can i help you
77:49 okay please don't drop that
77:53 on yourself or anyone else
77:56 he's holding this ginormous ladder i swear when brandon first joined the
77:59 company we couldn't we couldn't trust it oh dang it i did it wrong this time
78:05 son of a um like we couldn't trust him to tie his
78:09 shoes in the morning the guy was tripping all over everything
78:14 like oh man it was it was terrible but he's
78:18 been he's been with us so long in our messy environment because brendan's kind
78:22 of a neat freak you'd never know it um like looking at his workspace here but
78:27 like i've been to his house he's actually a pretty like tidy person but
78:31 it's just that especially at the old office there
78:34 really wasn't much that could be done to be tidy so everyone just kind of gave in
78:40 to the mess the analogy that i like to use is kind
78:44 of like those puzzles where there's one empty square and you have to
78:48 rearrange all the other squares to make a full picture the problem is that at
78:51 the old office there was no empty square there was no way to rearrange anything
78:55 so so brandon had to learn like the rest of us
78:59 to just catch himself when he tripped because the tripping was inevitable
79:04 and now he's like a pro like it's crazy i think he's better than me from having
79:08 to navigate all of the uh like all of my
79:11 stuff all of luke's stuff because he had to set up cameras and lights in every
79:15 area of the office so he's like the master of uh the master
79:20 of not tripping anymore
79:23 but man brandon you were scary in the early days
79:28 i always thought you were gonna die or destroy all my expensive stuff
79:32 or do both of them at the same time the ultimate insult
79:38 okay so we've got all our front panel connectors done we've got all our drives
79:42 plugged in um hey why don't we plug in some video
79:46 cards so oh man this is this is like this is killing me inside
79:52 well hopefully rylan can get that sorted out i'm going to have to leave it to him
79:56 unfortunately i mean it doesn't matter what they exchange it for as long as
80:00 they as long as it's like two of the same either of these configurations is fine
80:08 i don't know who screwed up i don't know if it was the retailer or if it was um
80:11 like lg's procurement the thing is like the cards are called the same thing
80:14 they're both called evga superclocked
80:18 it's just one of them has a reference cooler and one of them has an acx cooler
80:22 so i'm going to put the acx on the bottom i'm going to let the power supply deal with some of the heat from that and
80:26 exhaust it i know that exhausting your GPU heat through your
80:30 power supply is not really in the in the book of
80:34 best practices for a wicked awesome wicked awesome computer machine build
80:39 thing but uh yeah
80:43 it does work um especially if you've got a really
80:47 high quality power supply it's probably fine
80:52 sorry i just i want to tuck these things away so that i can do my uh
80:57 do my graphics card screws here there we go
81:08 got people asking me to do a test boot
81:11 ah yeah if i was smart i'd do that
81:17 i'm going for gold today my friends i'm actually i have only about 60 confidence
81:22 that this is gonna boot because i haven't uh i haven't checked this
81:25 motherboard with um i haven't checked the
81:30 compatibility matrix for xeons or for this RAM
81:34 we were going to use something else so i don't know i don't know we shall see
81:41 i might just get luke to lend me a monitor very temporarily
81:46 and then we'll we'll test it after see if it works if it doesn't work then
81:49 basically it's pretty simple i'm just going to grab a board off our shelf here
81:53 and then i'll figure out with lg how to get the right board and they can replace
81:57 it for me
82:00 because i do have at least something that'll work here in the studio for sure
82:04 and i really want it i really want rylan to get his machine because he's been waiting very patiently for it so
82:10 okay ah
82:14 these six plus two connectors i do appreciate them i like
82:18 them it was really annoying before everyone started putting these on video
82:22 cards but man it's hard to get the two
82:25 lined up sometimes especially when you're trying to
82:29 bend the cable into something so i saw force force awakens which is
82:35 cool don't worry brandon i'm not gonna say anything for their sake as well as for
82:40 yours um oh oh oh crap i got a message from a
82:45 twitch mod uh can i move you too creative uh sure
82:50 thanks bro i i wasn't really sure what i was
82:53 supposed to do with this so i just kind of i just did that Linus thing where i'm
82:57 just like ah someone else will let me know if i'm
83:00 doing it wrong and sure enough
83:05 they did they told me i was doing it wrong they asked if they could kind of
83:09 fix what i'm doing because i'm doing it wrong i was like okay sure man that's
83:13 cool all right
83:16 so the last thing to set up here is the nzxt
83:21 you oh i just crushed a box sorry rylan
83:28 oh boy i have no idea how this works
83:31 there's a lot of cables though so first is power i know we need that
83:36 okay so here's a molex connector
83:40 to my little just
83:44 dc plug i really wonder why they don't just have
83:47 a native molex plug on this thing that's really weird
83:50 probably they're repurposing something else that was intended for like another
83:54 industry and then they're just nzxt'ing computering it up so
83:59 that would probably be why
84:02 yeah yeah pretty much hey
84:06 until it gets mainstream enough
84:11 usb
84:17 okay oh i think i found a place to stash it
84:20 under this hard drive um wow it's gonna be really hard to fit
84:24 it down there though get in there oh yes very nice he's nice
84:30 i like it okay so i'm gonna stash the
84:33 hue right under the front hard drive i'm sorry you guys can't really see what i'm doing
84:39 um
84:43 everyone's like luke use the force star wars star wars mania is uh
84:48 is is strong with this one
84:52 okay oh sick
84:57 some of them some of them all of them
85:01 some of these strips are magnetic oh i love it are they all magnetic this
85:07 one doesn't seem very magnetic they're all magnetic sick
85:12 you're magnetic i think so
85:16 personal magnetism that's the only context i can think of
85:20 for it i'm leaving don't forget to do the thing
85:26 right the thing
85:29 it's with like the butt right
85:32 i said that that's with the butt yeah okay cool
85:35 just making sure
85:39 oh it has been a long long month but
85:43 if i get the thing done before work tomorrow
85:46 then um that'll be
85:50 good yeah people are like loop change shirts
85:54 do you guys really think we wear our Linus tech tip shirts all the time like
85:57 for realsies okay i do but other people aren't required to
86:04 i even offered them to them for free very few people have actually taken me
86:07 up on them apparently apparently they don't want to rep
86:11 LTT on their own time i see how it is
86:16 i know you don't have any LTT shirts brandon
86:19 do you have one which one do you have oh nice yeah did you buy that oh how come
86:24 you how come you have one of those
86:27 oh okay
86:31 nice
86:34 it's funny because we have kind of a g-rated channel so like
86:38 i'm never quite sure if i'm supposed to even say what it says on the front of
86:43 that shirt but it's our shirt so surely we decided at some point that we could
86:47 say on this show
86:54 yeah cats well that's that in the context of the shirt it's very clear
86:57 that it's a cat
87:00 oh dang it i gotta plug in a usb header here
87:04 it'd be cool if i had a third camera angle that's like um
87:08 like a headlight headlamp view kind of thing
87:14 okay so i'm going to show you guys actually i'm going to do the backs of these drives first
87:21 so this is how i deal with my ocd i use my my right angle one on the the SSD so
87:26 that at least the two hard drives are using both straight connectors and the SSD has the
87:31 right angle connector or something i justify it to myself that they're not
87:35 all the same like that
87:39 this is something that drives me crazy about other power supplies actually this
87:43 one doesn't do it i was ready to complain about this power supply and then it ended up doing it right is they
87:48 mostly have the um the SATA cables set up
87:53 so that you would have to run them top down in order to have them all plug in
87:57 easily so they're all like left angle instead
88:00 of right angle whereas most power supplies are in the basement of the
88:03 cases these days so having them come up this way actually makes more sense so
88:07 here we're going one two three and we're good just like that
88:12 then let's plug in our two SATA cables for those hard drives
88:17 so funny i so rarely put hard drives on the builds that we do for the show
88:21 that feels kind of weird plugging these in right now although i've been doing it more lately
88:25 now that we've been doing all that naz stuff with uh with unraid
88:30 showing how you can actually use your gaming tower as a nas that one's coming
88:33 to youtube fairly soon all right so that's done
88:40 oh dang it i dropped all the stuff
88:43 switch angles here
88:46 uh did i switch angles yes i did
88:52 okay so we got to figure out how we want to
88:56 do all of our lighting effects so this baby
89:01 can go up here and plug into
89:04 one of these little extension you do that finish this
89:11 and we're back i think
89:18 okay brandon repeat after me i step where you step
89:22 i touch nothing
89:26 what i did
89:29 well all we know was brandon was moving a ladder over near the streaming do you
89:34 see anything uh-huh and then the machine shut down
89:38 spectacularly shut down like zero warning
89:43 completely locked up shut down so
89:50 it's okay though i forgive you
89:54 um oh crap how does this work
90:01 yeah that's probably it okay i might actually have to check the
90:06 manual for this uh for this fractal fractal or this nzxt hue do dad
90:14 plus five volts something something grounding etc okay i'm gonna have to
90:18 check the manual you'd think i would have been checking the manual this whole time that i was
90:22 off camera but actually i was fixing the damn stream computer
90:27 yeah i'm getting a lot of hashtag fire brandon
90:31 so they've turned on you brandon it's official
90:34 that's how into you they were they like you as long as you're talking about
90:37 camera things but as soon as you break the stream
90:42 they turn on you
90:46 death by ladder yeah i don't even need to fire him he's probably going to die
90:53 oh it actually doesn't seem to say does it
90:58 okay plug a thing in there plug another thing in there yeah yeah yeah
91:02 huh okay
91:10 oh the edge with the black line on the led strips you'd think that would be in
91:14 the like very obvious and easy to find
91:17 quick guide part of it but it's not black line on the led strips
91:23 look at that i had it right anyway so there's a first time for everything
91:30 i got something right without having to do it a few times
91:35 oh i guess i don't really need this extension here
91:39 okay
91:42 the sucky thing about having the stream
91:46 cut out in the middle is that i will have to cut together
91:51 the video now which is very unfortunate it makes it a lot more work
91:57 but that's okay because brandon makes up for it with his good looks and charm
92:04 well i know it wasn't my fault and i know you were moving ladders
92:08 around
92:11 so i think the point of the magnets isn't necessarily to work on their own
92:15 so i'm going to go ahead i'm going to use the magnet but i'm going to also use
92:19 the included adhesive jug so the magnets can kind of hold the
92:24 adhesive in place something that is more needed than you might think if
92:28 you've ever mounted an led strip you probably know for the most part they do
92:32 not mount very reliably
92:36 all right so let's grab another one here i really like this system with the
92:39 little extensions and the little uh
92:42 you know whatever else it is that we got going on
92:46 huh it goes in this end i like this
92:50 so now i'm gonna do one on the top
92:54 going to go ahead i'm going to
92:58 yeah so i'll install that right up there we are going to have any lighting effect
93:03 we want oh wait a minute
93:06 it occurs to me this is not a five and a quarter inch bay device i wonder if we
93:09 actually ever got the strip that lg
93:13 ordered or if this is just one that nzxt sent to
93:17 me it doesn't really matter
93:21 i don't actually care
93:25 i'll just get nzxt to send another one
93:29 yep that'll do okay
93:33 so i'm actually really uncertain about this
93:37 last run here i think we might kind of
93:41 think we might kind of end up overdoing it if we're not careful
93:45 so i'm just going to kind of put that in there and then i'm going to
93:48 run this one kind of down here and i'm going to hope that that kind of
93:53 holds together for me here there we go
93:57 all right and that we end up with a nice nice even glow effect so i'm going to
94:00 use one more extension and then bring that around to the oh
94:04 they've got really short ones oh shoot i should have used one of those there
94:07 that's okay i'll send all the extra bits to ryland
94:11 i'm sure the first thing he's going to do is take the whole thing apart and put it all back together anyway
94:20 how many people managed to stay oh 2600 of you you guys you guys are the ones
94:25 who believe in me who believe in me for some reason
94:32 i've never given you a reason to believe that i can bring the stream back online
94:36 successfully but you believe anyway i admire that
94:43 see them i admire brandon
94:55 it's okay i know you didn't mean to ruin the evening
94:59 sorry
95:09 okay there we go all the led strips are
95:12 in cool i'm liking this rig so far actually
95:20 all right what's left
95:23 what is left is that it oh sli bridge
95:26 never want to forget the sli bridge that's always uh that's always annoying
95:29 you go and you boot up the machine for the first time you're like i'm sure something's missing
95:35 i've got people telling me to put the leds on the case door yes that is
95:39 actually a way to do it but i'm going to do it like this
95:45 all right i sure wish ASUS included black sli
95:49 bridges those just look awful this like orange sli bridge i don't know
95:54 what the deal is with that okay
95:59 not too shabby actually
96:03 a zip tie here a zip tie there and this
96:06 is uh this is some primo grade stuff right here oh there you go guys
96:12 looks a little something like that and i think that pretty much concludes
96:17 our first ever live
96:21 build log it wasn't really much of a guide or anything like that but let me
96:25 know and if you're watching this on youtube which it will be uploaded to
96:29 later let me know in the comments do you like this format for builds do you want
96:32 to see us do you know completely different things that are not like this
96:36 leave your suggestions we're always open to them but we're not always open to
96:39 them but we always ask for them and then sometimes we ask for them just so we can
96:42 ignore them that's not what we do all right see you guys later
96:49 it's always awkward doing outros on live broadcast stuff
96:53 because like yeah
96:56 and we're done oh crap i
