0:00 okay we gotta move this big thing over here
0:03 not because it's not cool it's just that the cool thing we're focused on today is a lot smaller
0:09 these are coming hard and heavy now i'm
0:13 talking of course about the bezel-less notchless phones from you know major
0:18 brands like oppo
0:22 and vivo okay yeah they're both a lot bigger in
0:26 asia especially apple oppo is freaking
0:29 huge in asia so but how is it that they beat samsung to
0:33 the punch and for that matter what was apple thinking
0:38 trying to make taking a bite out of your display into some kind of a status
0:43 symbol their hubris is going to be their downfall i swear
0:47 actually you know what who am i kidding if it hasn't happened yet then why would
0:51 it start now anyway this is the find x from chinese brand oppo
0:57 and the reviewer's guide came with a bunch of restrictions in terms of what i
1:01 was or wasn't allowed to test but i didn't sign anything so let's fire up
1:07 the trippiest phone camera i have ever seen
1:13 and look at some test photos and stuff shall we
1:23 oh right speaking of ah
1:26 do you not have a vpn go check out private internet access we've got a link
1:31 below get a vpn today
1:42 so i'm going to go ahead and say it it is one thing to rip off the iphone 10
1:48 and it is another to rip off the galaxy
1:51 s9 plus but to rip off
1:55 both of them and somehow do it
1:58 at the same time that is impressive
2:03 and that takes some serious
2:06 hutzpah so the fine 10 uh stopped me if you heard
2:11 this one before is a flagship Android smartphone with a snapdragon 845
2:14 processor eight gigs of lpddr4 RAM up to 256 gigs of storage a 37 30 milliamp
2:19 hour battery that is strangely specific dual sim slots fast five volt four and a
2:23 half amp charging Android 8.1 and yes here is the first big iphone 10
2:29 ripoff somebody's done it somebody has cloned
2:33 face id so my initial briefing materials this is
2:37 great said they were planning to call this o face
2:41 structured light show it swipe
2:45 oh anyway i guess some party pooper tipped
2:49 them off so the official name is probably tbd
2:52 but it uses a flood illuminator an infrared camera proximity sensor a dot
2:57 projector receiver and an RGB camera
3:00 which is another way of saying a camera and so far the thing has worked
3:06 basically seamlessly like check this out
3:09 so what you do is you swipe it grabs your face it takes about half a
3:13 second to go up and then half a second to go down and bam you're unlocked now
3:18 unfortunately i can't demo side by side with the iphone 10 because for whatever
3:24 reason face id is broken on my iphone i didn't feel like waiting two hours at
3:28 the apple store last time i was in the mall but from my memory the speed is
3:32 actually pretty similar once you factor in that the iphone 10
3:37 uses a lift to wake mechanism before face id will grab your face and register
3:42 it so by comparison this one i mean okay
3:46 so it does have lift to wake so i'm just gonna show so it has lift to wake but
3:52 the facial scanner obviously is is recessed right now so what you have to
3:56 do is you have to swipe the screen and then it comes up
4:00 and then it goes back down once it's done it's pretty freaking cool so it
4:04 uses a total of 15 000 dots
4:08 and if nothing else this is an absolutely
4:12 jaw-dropping part draw drawing jaw dropping party trick like check this out
4:17 so i'm gonna i'm gonna go out of my way to lock it and like you know you pull
4:20 out your phone to be like
4:24 that is so cool now with that said i do wish and this is
4:29 true of both the find x and the iphone 10 that
4:35 like vivo's next s there was a fingerprint scanner under the screen
4:40 this is a great solution because there are no moving parts and this one
4:45 actually has a fairly similar screen to
4:48 body ratio to the find x
4:51 i can say too though i mean like not drawing a ton of conclusions right now
4:56 because my time with the device has been pretty limited that i think i prefer apple's lift to
5:01 activate rather than swipe to activate especially because it allows face id to
5:05 work while it's just sitting down on a table in front of you
5:08 but then you are stuck with the notch
5:12 that holds all of the face id sensors and you don't get the all screen
5:18 experience and the all screen experience is pretty
5:21 freaking cool like i didn't rip out the calipers but apple claims that this is a
5:26 92.25 screen to body ratio and i have no
5:32 reason whatsoever to doubt it it looks absolutely amazing they're using pretty
5:37 much every trick available today including something called cop or chip
5:41 on panel which is like a flexible screen technology which
5:46 basically kind of wraps the electronics
5:50 for the display under the visible part of the panel
5:53 which curves around the sides so it doesn't have to sit on the edges which
5:58 gives you less bezel than ever before and that is where the samsung galaxy s9 comes in
6:03 okay come over here so so the similarities here
6:07 are um pretty striking so they've both got
6:11 curved gorilla glass 5 on both the front and the back now this one's got a d
6:15 brand skin so you can't really see it there but it's there this one's got a
6:19 6.4 inch amoled display running 2340x1080 so it is slightly lower
6:23 resolution but i do actually prefer
6:28 this taller aspect ratio so that's a 19
6:31 and a half by 9 aspect ratio other than
6:34 the difference in the bezels here on the bottom and here on the top so the fine 10 is
6:40 using uh swipe based navigation by the way you can use gestures or you can add
6:44 buttons these things look so similar like there's very little to distinguish
6:49 them on the top the s9 plus has got the sim tray whereas this one doesn't but
6:53 that's obviously because they've got this motorized
6:56 mechanism for the camera here you couldn't very well put a sim slot in
7:00 that thing and then on the bottom
7:03 okay so they weren't able to fit a headphone jack presumably because they
7:07 needed to make room for the dual sim tray right there
7:11 uh it is a little bit thinner though which doesn't really register in the
7:15 hand so much because it feels a little heavier although i
7:20 haven't actually put either of them on the scale the other the other thing
7:23 that's similar is even the colors so i've got the bordeaux version of the
7:26 fine 10 and i've got the lilac version of the s9 so they've actually both
7:30 managed to come out with purple phones which
7:35 previously i don't think was a very common thing
7:38 um yeah so not super stoked on the lack of
7:42 headphone jack oh right other other differences lock buttons on this side
7:46 and then over here the only thing missing is a bixby button if you're
7:49 especially into that sort of thing which i suspect most of you are not
7:54 camera wise we've got 20 megapixel dual cameras whatever that means um so the
7:59 spec sheet that i had actually wasn't 100 sure it seemed to think it was a 16
8:03 megapixel f 2.0 and a 20 megapixel f 2.2
8:08 and because it's got dual cameras it does have a portrait mode but quite
8:12 frankly uh maybe they still have some software
8:16 work to do or something along those lines i did do some test shots but
8:20 it is pretty rough right now which is
8:23 kind of weird to me especially when you consider that oppo is closely related to
8:28 one plus and oneplus's portrait mode actually isn't too shabby this is
8:33 actually not a terrible example of it it did reasonably well here but the biggest
8:38 difference so the main phones that i used for comparison were the s9 plus the
8:44 pixel 2 xl and then i threw in both the
8:47 nexus and the find 10 and the biggest
8:51 difference between the korean and the american phone i guess and the chinese
8:55 ones were that instead of a bokeh effect
8:59 the chinese phones both seemed to be content with blurring the background
9:05 which is not necessarily the same thing
9:08 they don't look the same another big difference that i noticed
9:12 between this and the s9 plus is actually something that i first picked up on a
9:16 review that i'm working on of the alcatel 3v
9:19 so this is a 150 phone way at the other end of the spectrum here
9:24 and that is that for some reason
9:27 and i still haven't narrowed down exactly why because netflix
9:32 did not reply to my inquiry but for some
9:36 reason the HDR certified phones that i'm
9:39 getting are not just getting an HDR version of movies like this is thor
9:44 ragnarok here they are also getting a higher resolution version it is very
9:49 noticeable in the hair on the characters or in any fine details in the distance
9:53 that this one not only has HDR colors
9:57 it is also getting a higher resolution feed and i haven't quite figured out
10:00 exactly why that would be so jury's kind of vote
10:05 on this other than lacking HDR um wireless charging and having some
10:11 serious misgivings about the durability of this mechanism like i'm already
10:15 noticing when i'm holding the camera to take a picture i'm kind of getting my fingers in there and if i were to close
10:20 the camera while they're in there it doesn't pinch but
10:24 there's there's definitely room for it to screw up
10:28 i'm not sure if i'm ready to give a recommendation but i don't know if that
10:31 matters because there isn't even like a global
10:35 rom available yet with Android assistant for example things that north americans
10:39 would be used to seeing and i don't know if apple has any plans to enter north
10:42 america but it's definitely a cool phone i'm
10:45 just not sure if this as amazing and cool as it is is quite
10:51 the right approach to all scree phone but i just i don't not 100 sure what the answer is
10:56 so so far we've got the notch which i i also don't think is the right
11:00 answer we've got your selfie camera down here and just one big bezel which i'm
11:05 not sure is the right answer we've got samsung with
11:10 you know maybe they can make this a little smaller but beyond that they really can't go anywhere with it
11:14 and then we've got vivo with the in-screen fingerprint sensor which is
11:19 not a bad approach but remember they too have a mechanical camera raising thing
11:23 but with this one it only pops up when you need to take a selfie which for me
11:27 anyway comes up an awful lot less
11:32 so let me know your comments below does oppo have the right approach here
11:38 or do we have to rethink everything does it even matter if you
11:42 have an all screen phone i will say it makes everything else feel
11:47 very last gen like a pixel 2 xl is like like caveman compared to this thing and
11:53 i remember being impressed by this one this video is brought to you by massdrop
11:57 the massdrop x hifi n he 350 headphones
12:01 specifically they're using new dynamic drivers so different from what was used
12:05 in the he 300 which results in a more neutral sound signature they feature a
12:10 comfortable headband the lure ear pads and a detachable cable and they ship
12:14 within two to three days so check them out at the link in the video description
