0:00 i remember seeing in the bio settings of
0:03 this motherboard this very expensive motherboard an option for pci express
0:09 hot swap which i have never personally tried
0:12 before but what it sounds like is just
0:15 putting pci express cards in and taking them off while this system is running
0:20 is that going to work wow i actually super don't know so let's
0:25 find out after i tell you about pia private
0:30 internet access encrypts all your internet traffic and uses a safe
0:34 protected ip and it's got a ton of other useful features you can check it out now
0:37 at the link below
0:48 so uh there's lots of things in a computer that are hot swappable and that
0:52 we hot swap every day so usb for example even though you would safely remove the
0:56 device theoretically with the you know little prompt in the bottom corner
1:01 anytime you are taking something out or putting something in
1:05 without powering off first it is technically hot swap and some standards
1:10 that don't support hot swap like ps2 keyboards for
1:14 example you can still for the most part hot swap
1:18 them without any ill effects with all of that said there are components out there
1:22 that either cannot be hot swapped or
1:27 have to be specifically designed for hot
1:30 swap in order to function with it even components like
1:34 cpus and memory can
1:37 actually be hot swap but that's more of a server level feature where the system
1:42 itself and usually some kind of a of a daughter board that that slides in or
1:47 whatever else has to be designed for it because you can't just you can't just
1:52 cut power to uh to a computer component and expect everything to operate
1:57 normally now as for pci express
2:02 i confess i haven't done a ton of research coming
2:05 into this so it's possible that the device itself
2:10 also needs to be designed for hot swap
2:13 but then it's possible that it doesn't i don't know where we're
2:17 going to find out today for those of you wondering the the titan
2:21 x here i will not be hot swapping that that's
2:25 just here so that we have a display output i think it's time for us to go
2:29 find some victims so this is our selection of random pci
2:34 express cards that are of sort of dubious value
2:39 uh these actually got for free in scrapyard wars you know what let's start
2:44 with these okay so uh
2:48 oh yeah before we do this i should
2:51 probably enable hot swap
2:55 ah there it is
3:01 no idea what any of these settings do
3:05 sure looks good to me
3:10 i wonder what's better black slots or
3:13 gray slots i'm gonna try a gray slot
3:18 oh this feels so wrong
3:25 okay
3:28 nothing catastrophic appears to have happened
3:33 okay it's not showing up
3:36 let's try a restart stop code driver power state failure
3:42 go ahead and cut okay so one of three things happened here either you have to actually power
3:47 off for it to be detected we're gonna try that first
3:51 or we killed it or
3:55 it was dead already which is quite possible this has been sitting on a
3:59 shelf for literally years either way it can go over there now
4:04 all right now this
4:07 i am at least 40 percent sure works
4:14 okay whoa now hold on a minute
4:18 whoa hold on a minute i think that's more usb than we had
4:22 before okay don't cut this clip because no one's
4:27 gonna believe me if we cut this clip
4:37 maybe i was wrong go ahead and cut so after powering down
4:44 and turning it back on it's working
4:48 did it not show up because the system had never seen this
4:52 device before
5:00 oh oh oh ouch oh uncorrectable error ouch go ahead and
5:05 cut we're gonna disable it then
5:08 we're gonna pull it
5:12 we hot unplugged something
5:15 am i gonna get away with a hardware changes scan
5:18 i'm starting to wonder if these are just bugged on this computer
5:22 look it's still in there but i know for a fact
5:26 see i can prove that the hardware is not in there
5:29 let's just go for it
5:34 oh damn it go ahead and cut
5:38 i'm gonna grab a different boot drive go ahead
5:43 all right let's try a more fresh Windows
5:52 enable oh there it goes
5:56 go ahead and cut maybe the black slots are bad luck
6:00 you let me down buddy go ahead and cut
6:04 maybe we just need to try something that's not a storage device how about
6:08 this network card
6:11 go ahead and cut so what we think we know so far is that we haven't actually
6:15 killed any of the hardware we've been experimenting with i did find a couple potential
6:20 sacrificial cards here so this is like a 5450
6:24 and then this is that titan that we brutally
6:29 savaged
6:35 so the AMD card seems to have given zero f's
6:39 just like the network card um go ahead and cut this is like an og
6:44 titan it's not it's not very high end anymore neither of them are showing up
6:49 let's try a restart here oh my god is that Windows up i hate it
6:59 go ahead and cut okay so we're having problems booting at all go ahead and cut good cut go ahead
7:05 and cut holy sh no oh my what the
7:09 don't prompt again no
7:12 so the AMD card is showing up now
7:19 i think what we have to do is try some more modern hardware
7:24 a 750 series SSD and let's try a more modern graphics
7:29 card a 1050 ti
7:34 oh fans turned on
7:38 that one's definitely getting power
7:41 come on really
7:45 has to be a driver thing
7:51 so let's see if at least after just a soft reset
7:57 they show up because that will tell us if maybe
8:00 Windows is the issue wait what
8:05 the graphics card's not showing up
8:12 let's pull the SSD
8:17 off
8:20 let's fire up Windows server go ahead and cut
8:24 okay okay bye uh so i'm an idiot um
8:29 you don't have to enable this i didn't even read it this just says you have to
8:33 enable this if your os does not support
8:36 pci express hot plug ahead and cut
8:41 so let's go straight for gold
8:46 no here goes the usb drive nope network
8:54 can Linux handle it better
8:58 it showed up and then it crashed
9:02 while we were trying Linux i was preparing a server
9:05 2016 installation oh shut up
9:10 best case scenario so we have the presence of mind to disable it before we
9:14 pull it
9:21 maybe there's some options or something go ahead and cut
9:25 okay so we've reached the point in this project where it's time to talk to tech
9:29 support um
9:33 and i did find a really interesting article so this is an Intel white paper
9:37 about their data center ssds but as you
9:40 guys might have noticed when we were booted into ubuntu
9:44 this SSD shows up as one of their data center ssds they're actually based on a
9:50 very very similar platform in fact i believe they use the same pcb even so i
9:55 was really hoping that this would behave similarly and they do support hot swap
10:00 PCIe including surprise hot add or hot remove
10:05 but native os hot plug no
10:10 so we need to have that off
10:15 okay BIOS hot plug support is only for if it
10:18 doesn't support it natively which this says Windows does
10:23 and we have to ensure that surprise hot plug registers are set correctly
10:29 so i'm gonna try this
10:33 while i wait for ASUS to get back to me go ahead and cut
10:37 oh no
10:40 go away
10:44 all right well i guess if it never detects it it can never
10:48 crash go ahead and cut i think i've been going about this all
10:52 wrong i saw
10:55 pci express hot plug in the BIOS
10:59 and i went yeah
11:02 heck yeah these slots
11:05 but what if what if they actually mean
11:09 pci express storage over u.2
11:14 so this board is actually really unique come have a look at this in that it has
11:19 four this is part of what it's using all those PCIe lanes on the CPU for it has
11:25 four u.2 connectors so these
11:29 are technically 4x PCIe slots
11:32 effectively you can actually just run a cable off of them
11:36 and plug them into a 16x slot
11:39 what they're intended for though are NVMe drives like this one this is the
11:44 same drive as this it's just that instead of this it's got this
11:49 so the board might only be set up for that
11:52 on these lanes i mean it's less dramatic looking but
11:58 this is still potentially really cool which means
12:09 go ahead and cut so i am not defeated
12:13 our wonderful contacted ASUS gary
12:17 has actually worked over the weekend it
12:20 turns out the features there on the board
12:24 and it's exposed in the BIOS it's not enabled
12:29 so they have provided me with a beta BIOS that should enable it
12:34 i actually wasn't that far off the board is only
12:39 specifically designed to support this hot plug functionality
12:44 on the u.2 ports so theoretically when i flash this BIOS
12:49 it will enable or unlock that functionality
12:54 close up
12:58 update time this is weird it dropped me right into
13:01 the BIOS which means i don't know what's going on
13:10 even a SATA drive isn't showing up as bootable in here so like
13:16 there it is can't boot to it
13:20 it's not even beta BIOS it's like alpha BIOS
13:26 okay you can cut i sent ASUS a complaining thing about
13:30 not being able to boot and i got back
13:35 did you rtfm they sent me instructions for a bunch of
13:40 bio stuff to reconfigure in order to enable it
13:48 we're gonna do that i mean i thought it was just a BIOS update
13:55 okay so there is some crazy stuff in
13:59 here i'm supposed to go to socket 1 ports 1a to 1d
14:04 and here is where i am
14:10 enabling hot plug and surprise hot plug
14:14 for my u.2 ports
14:17 okay this is great news
14:21 reading the manual
14:26 i want to see this work
14:30 that's interesting go ahead and cut okay this is the raid
14:34 driver we need
14:37 there it is okay where's my drive
14:41 there it is yeah yeah yeah yeah whatever okay
14:45 here it is
14:54 there it is
14:59 but off camera
15:03 i had another idea
15:07 so there's hot plug options in the BIOS for
15:11 other pci express uh slots on this board but ASUS has
15:15 specifically told me that there's like a finished system that uses this board as
15:19 a base that has a special backplane that enables the pci express slots themselves
15:25 to be hot pluggable but that the standalone board doesn't do it so given
15:29 that following their instructions so far has been my best bet i'm going to take
15:33 their word for it but i have something special
15:37 this is a u.2 to pci express adapter
15:43 so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take what is effectively
15:47 again a pci express slot
15:54 and i want to hot plug it
15:57 i don't know if this is going to work
16:03 oh no dice why don't we try this one
16:10 okay now oh
16:16 you know what no how far has listening to manufacturer
16:21 instructions ever gotten anyone so
16:26 we're going to change not just ports 1a to 1d
16:29 we're going to change all of the ports
16:33 to surprise hot plug and hot plug
16:37 and we are just going to yolo it and see what happens
16:43 one last hurrah
16:47 so something i don't know is if turning on hot plug on the slots could have some
16:52 kind of adverse effect on some other functionality
16:58 so first things first this is my best bet for hot pluggable
17:03 just sanity check i want to try off the u.2 again
17:08 see it's powered though see this is what
17:11 this is what's whoa
17:19 it's it's on
17:24 it works oh it really works check it out check it
17:28 out activity led it's fast even writing
17:34 crazy now i want to push my luck
17:45 oh
17:48 it handled it gracefully the craziest thing is i didn't even have
17:52 to like refresh device manager it was just like it was like plugging in a usb
17:56 device so now we're gonna try the network card
18:03 usb card maybe
18:11 do you see that right there
18:16 no okay hold on hold on
18:20 usb stick check this out
18:26 no it's working
18:35 that's that usb drive
18:38 now what we need to see is no blue screen
18:47 it's gone no blue screen
18:51 hot plug PCIe okay
18:57 show me that drive activity
19:08 maybe it just
19:15 oh that is crazy now maybe it's slot specific
19:23 i want to see this server network card work
19:27 i'm like shaking which is not good i mean that's the
19:30 most dangerous part of this apparently it's like
19:34 screwing up and like touching metal on some contacts here something
19:38 total madness there it is there it is
19:44 i want to see it work though
19:50 we are on the internet on a hot plugged
19:54 okay
19:58 do we keep pushing the boundaries brandon do you want to see a video card
20:03 who do we punish NVIDIA or AMD
20:06 NVIDIA what they ever do to you all right here we go
20:14 okay fans are on i can't even believe this
20:19 no way
20:23 holy sh
20:28 do you think it's gonna let me just like install a game or install the driver and
20:32 like run a game like
20:35 is this as crazy as i think it is we're just plugging and unplugging cards from
20:39 a motherboard willy-nilly it's on
20:43 we gotta show that there's no there's no tricks here
20:46 like look this bench not plugged in
20:50 this is nothing nothing nothing here
20:55 this nothing nothing
20:58 unbelievable this device is working properly
21:03 i mean is basically everything going to work
21:06 here the avermedia tv tuner card
21:10 let's go back to the very first thing we tried
21:13 i want to see this system compatibility checking can you imagine that just pop a
21:17 graphics card in your system and install the driver and go
21:22 holy crap it worked
21:30 you saw it here first my friends
21:33 hot swapping pci express cards
21:38 in a powered system because you're just a mega baller like
21:43 that and you don't play by the rules
21:48 wow

22:48 know just hey what should i build for my next gaming system or if it's something
22:52 as random and bizarro land as this
22:57 unbelievable
