0:00 magnetic induction or qi chargers let
0:03 you just plonk down your phone on a little pad to
0:06 get juiced up which is really cool way better than wires
0:10 but they only work over very short distances
0:14 and they need to be correctly aligned for optimal efficiency
0:18 well what if i told you that there's a better way
0:23 what if i told you that this speaker right here
0:27 and these trains going around me are all
0:31 being powered by that space-agey looking light fixture
0:35 up there that there is the prototype of why
0:39 charge's long-range wireless power delivery system
0:44 and holy is this thing ever cool
0:56 cablemod's configurator service makes it easy to customize and order cables for
1:00 your rig and customers in europe now have their own configurator where
1:03 cablemod handles all duties import taxes and documentation check it out at the
1:08 link below so this right here is the transmitter and although i guess
1:12 technically it could work if we just plugged it in while i'm holding it i
1:17 definitely get tired of hauling it around and also this is the only
1:22 prototype in existence that can deliver
1:25 the amount of power that we are going to need today so if i dropped it
1:30 that would be pretty tragic i wouldn't do that
1:35 deploying the transmitter is surprisingly simple if you have a drop
1:38 ceiling so this prototype is actually held in place by these magnets
1:45 and zip ties this is for quick and easy testing but
1:49 production models should have more permanent fixtures
1:53 once it's secured all we need to do is plug it into a regular dc power source
1:58 okay so this light right here is just
2:01 a regular light and then this one around the rim is more of a status indicator so
2:06 while it's booting up it blinks blue and then once it's green it means that it's
2:12 actually good to go the really cool tech though is actually
2:16 this black bit in the middle which is an infrared window behind which is an ir
2:22 transmitter and then this right here is
2:26 also an infrared window and behind that
2:29 is a receiver so if i just put this let's say for example right
2:34 here and it does need line of sight
2:39 give it a second
2:46 so if i just take this phone and place it
2:50 let's say right here on my ladder and boom
2:55 it's charging and if you look up here the status
2:59 indicator changes to solid blue but how is it doing that
3:05 from up top the transmitter is actually
3:08 projecting some very high energy
3:12 infrared light and the receiver is basically like a
3:16 solar panel so there's a special photovoltaic cell in here that is tuned
3:21 to the infrared beam that the transmitter is outputting and now i know
3:27 what you guys are thinking i was thinking the same thing
3:30 is this entire room being blasted with
3:33 infrared radiation right about now am i going to turn into like a mutant more
3:38 importantly will my tv remote stop working
3:41 the answer is no not at all so the
3:45 receiver has a very specific signature
3:48 that the transmitter looks for and when it sees it it shoots out a very
3:54 thin ir beam basically like a laser directly at the
3:59 receiver which is pretty cool
4:02 but what makes it loads better is the transmitter's ability to track a moving
4:09 receiver so i thought that this demo was smoke and
4:13 mirrors when i first saw it back at computex last year
4:17 but these trains right here can be fully
4:20 powered by the transmitter up in the ceiling giving you some idea of how
4:24 quickly your phone or your other device could be
4:28 moving around the room and still be powered and or charging and to prove
4:34 that the trains have no batteries the instant the beam is broken
4:39 the trains stop once line of sight has been restored it
4:42 just takes a second or two and then power transmission will resume this
4:46 means that there's no way for a person or like your eyes or something to be
4:51 exposed to the high energy beam and the fda and other international safety
4:56 regulators have already given it the seal of approval
5:00 plus you get to feel like a magician
5:07 okay so what you're probably wondering now though is how much power
5:12 can it actually deliver well why charge brought two different
5:17 models here there's this smaller one that's aimed more at like internet of
5:22 things applications this can deliver about one watt while having a smaller
5:27 footprint making it a little more subtle then there's the larger one that we put
5:31 on the ceiling that can do up to three watts
5:35 so this is one of their receivers hooked up to a speaker
5:47 not bad
5:50 but if we try to go too high
5:54 it tanks out a little bit now let's hook up a larger receiver that
5:58 they've got here this one does one and a half watts
6:02 and see how much louder we can go
6:12 not bad that's too shy of max volume
6:18 but i mean if we're being entirely honest
6:23 here that's still not a whole ton of power and like if i wanted to charge my
6:28 phone or heaven forbid a tablet
6:31 a what and a half isn't a ton and putting a case like this on it is
6:36 probably not that practical
6:40 fortunately this guy is more of a proof of concept
6:45 and why charges first commercial product makes a lot more sense
6:49 so this guy right here is a qi charger with regular usb on the underside that
6:55 can be placed anywhere in the room and still receive power so for something
7:00 like a coffee shop they could offer charging at their
7:04 tables without running cords to every
7:07 single one of them and that way if someone wants to
7:11 relocate the table to sit with their friends it's totally not a big deal they
7:16 would just kind of go like that and bippity boppity wham it is wirelessly
7:21 charging what makes it really well integrated is
7:25 the fact that it sits actually in the table like this like obviously we're not
7:29 going to drill a big hole in our table in order to do that right now and the
7:32 fact that it has a battery inside it so
7:36 that acts as a buffer so that battery can trickle charge all day and all night
7:41 and then when someone plugs in or puts their phone down on the pad it'll be
7:46 able to charge at more than just you know three quarters of a watt and it
7:51 won't matter if somebody you know is in the middle of a really really you know
7:56 fascinating conversation and blocks the beam for a little while
8:01 and this is just the beginning i'm really excited to see where this
8:05 tech is going i mean just how much power will they be able to get out of these
8:09 systems in the future could receivers just be built right into
8:13 your phone or tablet and a little with a little you know window right there i
8:17 mean that would allow your device to trickle charge all day long if you're in
8:22 range of a transmitter maybe this will finally be the solution
8:27 to what has been the biggest problem with smartphones
8:31 those pesky headphone jacks no not those battery life
8:36 thermaltake's vue 37 mid tower case features an enlarged transparent gull
8:41 wing window panel design and remarkable expansion with support for up to eatx
8:46 motherboards and multiple drive bays it's got a fully modular design it
8:51 supports vertical and horizontal radiator placement and it comes with two
8:55 pre-installed ring 14 led fans or you
8:59 can actually get the full RGB variant check it out today at the link below to
9:03 learn more so thanks for watching guys if you disliked this video you clearly hate
9:08 technology and you're on the wrong channel but if you liked it hit the like
9:12 button get subscribed or check out the link to where to buy the stuff we featured in the video description just
9:16 kidding it's still prototypes you can't buy it yet but at some point you will
9:20 also linked in the description is our merge store which has cool shirts like this one and our community forum which
9:25 you should totally join that this speaker right here
9:29 and these trains running around me bloody
