0:00 which is better an SSD or a hard drive honestly it's sort of like asking which
0:04 is better a motorcycle or a semi-truck all right so you might be sitting there
0:08 going that's a weird thing to say lionist why would you say something like
0:11 that and the answer is because they're really not that comparable they're just
0:15 different let's start with performance when it comes to Raw speed ssds are
0:20 faster I see many folks comparing the sequential speed of an SSD to the
0:25 sequential speed of a hard drive and saying oh well they're kind of similar
0:29 but the reality of it is unless you copy large files back and forth all day this
0:34 specification is pretty much meaningless I'm serious it has nothing to do with
0:38 the way that they will that you will perceive the performance in the real
0:42 world ssds are all about little data
0:45 transactions that happen all the time all over the place when you're running
0:48 something like an operating system on them you know an instant message comes
0:52 through a program launches and needs to access a ton of little files all over
0:56 the place these are the times when not having to physically move move ahead
1:00 across a disc allows an SSD to utterly
1:03 destroy a hard drive in terms of performance in system responsiveness any
1:08 modern SSD will be easily several times faster than any hard drive and sometimes
1:13 much more than that okay that's great but what if you have lots of data to
1:17 store and that's your main concern it's not like playing back video or music
1:21 files or looking at your archive of pictures requires blazing fast
1:25 performance so this is where hard drives still Excel at the time of filming this
1:31 $160 buys you either a 256 GB SSD or a 4
1:37 terb yes a 16 times larger hard drive
1:41 for that kind of difference in price per gig you could literally build two hard
1:46 drive based storage boxes and have one of them set up as an off-site backup
1:50 with the money that you saved by not using an SSD based backup solution so
1:55 yes folks for mass storage of data we are a long way away from hard drives
1:59 being replaced by ssds okay but what about reliability now this one's a
2:04 little bit complicated hard drives are pretty reliable these days but as
2:08 devices with moving Parts they will die eventually the good news is they usually
2:13 give warning signs like uh if your hard drive is making clicking noises right
2:16 now for example first check to make sure it hasn't turned into a dolphin then
2:20 replace it if it is still a hard drive um but the bad news is that any kind of
2:25 use will wear them out for ssds reading
2:29 from them a won't really wear them out very much especially if you keep them
2:33 running cool but if you write to them heavily you can kill a consumer grade
2:38 model relatively quickly so I guess I'd
2:41 put it this way in an environment where shock is an everyday occurrence such as
2:45 in a notebook or tablet I would choose SSD every time in an environment where
2:50 that's not the case then reliability to me is a secondary Factor after I
2:55 determine my performance and storage needs which leads us to the in between
3:00 solution hybrid drives these leverage the technology of hard drives and ssds
3:05 at the same time but that's a topic that I've covered separately so I'm just
3:09 going to leave a link here for you for that now speaking of hybrid Solutions an
3:13 audiobook is kind of like a hybrid between reading a book and riding a
3:17 motorcycle you know because it's informative and exciting okay I was
3:21 reaching a little bit there but my Segways can't always be perfect the
3:25 point is that if you go to audible.com tequ you can browse the internet's
3:28 leading audiobook service with over 150,000 titles to choose from you can go
3:33 right now and pick up a great read like The Art of procrastination by John Perry
3:37 or if you don't feel like it at the moment right you can sign up for a
3:41 membership to get a credit for one audiobook per month to use whenever you
3:45 see fit and the cool thing about that option is that the first one is on the
3:49 house so head on over to audible.com tequ to sign up guys like this video if
3:53 you liked it dislike it if you disliked it share it if you thought that the
