0:00 on July 29th 2017 AMD held their Tech
0:04 day for two of the most exciting products to come out of the company in
0:08 years ryzen Threadripper and RX Vega
0:13 now obviously I wasn't able to be at the tech day because I was busy with the
0:17 rest of my team hosting our first ever LTX Tech Carnival but AMD provided me
0:22 the briefing materials and Alienware sent over this area 51 so that I could
0:28 show off both both AMD's top-of-the-line
0:32 1950x 16 core 32 thread processor and a
0:37 prototype of the RX Vega 64 limited
0:41 edition from this park

0:59 video description let's start with Vega the
1:03 bulk of graphics cards actually sell for
1:07 under $300 but that doesn't mean that there's
1:10 no value to having an Enthusiast offering enthusiasts recommend Hardware
1:15 to their less enthusiastic friends so if
1:19 you're AMD every RX Vega you sell might
1:22 sell a 560 or three so to compete in
1:26 this space AMD says they went back to the drawing board on a lot of things a
1:32 brand new pixel engine brand new geometry engine support for Rapid packed
1:37 math to accelerate the rendering of objects that don't benefit from higher
1:41 precision and 8 gigs of state-of-the-art
1:44 hbm2 memory with up to an unbelievable
1:47 484 gab per second of bandwidth the
1:52 entry level card called Vega 56 contains
1:55 only 56 of their next gen compute unit
2:00 versus 64 in the higher end SKS it's air
2:04 cooled consumes about 150 watts
2:07 according to rumors full benchmarks will follow when the review embargo lifts and
2:12 seems to be positioned against the GTX 1070 at 3.99 Standalone while the top
2:19 tier Vega 64 is available in two configurations an aircooled version at
2:24 1546 MHz boost and up to a rumored 300
2:28 watts and a water cooled one at 1677
2:32 boost and I hope this isn't right up to
2:36 400 watts of power consumption as for
2:40 pricing for this one it gets a little complicated out of the gate AMD is
2:45 offering what they're calling radon packs so two games that vary by region
2:50 the Germany version might contain prey and Sniper Elite rather than Wolfenstein
2:55 2 for example $200 off of an ultrawide
2:59 Samsung freesync Monitor and $100 off a
3:02 ryzen 7 CPU and motherboard combo AMD is
3:06 touting this as up to $420 of value and it seems like it's
3:11 adding about $100 to the price that you
3:14 pay based on the entry level pack with Vega
3:18 56 and I guess all I can say is I hope
3:22 that you the consumer think that's a good deal because at launch while this
3:27 limited edition brushed metal shroud is available it's likely that the only way
3:32 you'll be able to buy a Vega 64 is with
3:35 a bundle this annoying restriction appears
3:40 to be an attempt to ship cards to Gamers
3:43 rather than just wiping out all their inventory to coin miners so at least I
3:49 can see that AMD's heart is in the right place but I'd like to hear what you guys
3:54 in the comments think about that on to
3:57 ryzen Threadripper this one is both simpler and more complicated in some
4:01 ways it's simple because we have a pretty good idea of what to expect based
4:06 on the specs the 1950x is a 16 core 32
4:10 thread 3.4 GHz based 4 GHz boost quad
4:15 Channel ddr4 monster so given that we're
4:18 already familiar with single-threaded Zen performance at a given frequency and
4:23 Zen multi-core scaling across CCX units
4:27 the only real question mark left is how the quad Channel memory enabled by AMD's
4:32 use of four CCX instead of two will
4:36 affect Zen performance and if I had to guess I'd say that's going to be a
4:40 really good thing now it's complicated
4:44 because it's hard to assign value to
4:47 these high-end desktop Parts in traditional ways at $1,000 the 1950x is
4:54 not a great value for gaming in the sense that an overclocked ryzen 5 for a
5:00 fraction of the cost will perform very similarly or even better but from a
5:05 Content creation data science and meat
5:09 tasking perspective it's a total GameChanger and its pricing is a big
5:14 part of that story over the last couple of generations Intel has inched up the
5:20 pricing of its Flagship consumer processors in an apparent attempt to
5:24 avoid cannibalizing the lucrative Zeon lineup and AMD says Nope
5:30 they're launching two other chips here the 1920x is a 12 core variant with
5:35 similar clock speeds but that one's not
5:38 that interesting to me I think an extra 200 bucks for four more cores is a great
5:44 deal by the time you're dropping fat stacks of money on an x399 motherboard
5:49 and a cooler that's going to have to handle a
5:52 rumored 180 wat and they're also
5:57 launching an 8 core 1900x
6:00 this one is actually more interesting to me because even though it has the same
6:04 core count as a ryzen 7 if you're
6:07 building a workstation or compute box you might not need a ton of CPU and 550
6:14 bucks is a phenomenal value for the quad
6:18 Channel memory controller and more importantly 64 PCI Express Lanes enough
6:24 to run pretty much as many gpus as you want without running into band WID
6:30 limits so in summary then to Gamers unless you're hardcore into CPU encoding
6:36 your Twitch streams while you play which we will be testing in our full review
6:40 it's not too relevant but to folks like me ryzen Threadripper looks like a game
